      FOREWORD

      Katerina Anghelaki Rooke first appeared in the Hellenic Letters when she was only seventeen years old. Her godfather Nikos Kazantzakis presented her poem Loneliness to John Goudelis, editor of the literary magazine New Epoch, with the note, please include this poem in your next issue. It was written by a high school girl and it is the best poem I have ever read and this was her entrance into the world of literature, as she poignantly mentioned in various interviews she gave over the years. From then on she worked tirelessly writing poetry and translating poetry in a career that has lasted to this day.

      Her work amounts to a sizable bibliography from poetry collections to translations, to articles and reviews she has written and still writes although time has left many scars which her delicate body shows quite eloquently; Katerina Anghelaki Rook has received many awards both in Hellas and abroad. Now at the dusk of her life she reflects on things she has experienced over the years and she has become philosophical. In an interview she gave recently she made reference to loneliness and how she deals with it. Truly Loneliness was the title of her first ever published poem and loneliness is the subject of her reflection. She considers herself quite familiar with the concept when characteristically she says that although loneliness appeared many times in her life it was something livable and something she lived with since she never felt alone in one place in life until she reached the unbearable loneliness of old age; and this she faces with her constant involvement, her graceful appearances in events which she always enriches with her sweet demeanor.

      The ravaging time, she wrote, inspires both the prose writer and the poet because with their work they get near the negative aspects of our lives: sadness, silence, survival, separation and the concept of future and most importantly the concept of Death. She has come to the conclusion that, rejection means freedom as she wrote in a dialogue between beauty and ugliness and this is the woman who attracted and still attracts all who come near her because of her internal beauty and her self-contention that overpowers everything else; rejection means freedom since you don’t have to fight in order to prove you possess certain value while you are ugly. When others reject us we feel happy because the fulfillment of our internal needs doesn’t depend on them anymore. Therefore one can focus in themselves and discover emotion and joy in things others don’t

      Self-contention constitutes the basis in human happiness, a lesson I learned from this old lady, Katerina Anghelaki Rooke with the brilliant eyes and the sweetest smile. I met her at the Polis Art Café, in Athens, in September 2015 when I launched my latest two books and a common friend brought her to my event as an invited guest. She sat next to me at the head table and I was awed by the brilliance of her eyes, though she was a frail old lady; she even joked with me when once I mispronounced one word by placing the accent of the book title one syllable further from the proper one and quite pleasantly she tapped her fingers on my hand and corrected me. I was also awed when she browsed through my book EROTOKRITOS, an almost six hundred year old romantic-epic that consists of ten thousand fifteen syllable rhyming verses which I transcribed when I was only eleven years old in Athens during the summer and autumn of 1958. Going through the book she turned to me and while her eyes reflected on her endless sweetness she smiled and said, congratulations Mr. Aligizakis this proves that from young age you were destined to become a poet; needless to say that I floated among the clouds for the rest of the night. It was at that event when I asked for her permission to do this translation, which she graciously granted
