ABOUT THE AUTHOR
PREFACE
I didn’t set out to write a book.
When my now-teenaged son was little, he loved a good bedtime story. He’d hurry to bed early so there was more time for me to tell him a story, new each time, never the same one twice.
One day in the fall of 2018, we were reminiscing about the old bedtime story routine and I jokingly suggested that, if I offered, he’d still go to bed early for a good story. That conversation got me thinking; Wouldn’t it be cool to put a short story on paper for him as a Christmas gift?
Once I got started, I found it hard to stop. My imagination was in overdrive and I filled page after page with the story that played out in my mind.
Christmas Eve arrived and my wife, son, and I sat by the fire and read the story together. My son’s instant reaction was that it was the best Christmas gift he’d ever received.
I let several other people read it, but no one encouraged me to publish it as much as my father, the original storyteller, and the inspiration behind the grandfather in this story. He constantly pushed me, saying that I would never know success if I didn’t take risks.
Fast-forward three months and my father passed away unexpectedly. I realized then that I had to publish the story in his honor.
I hope that you enjoy the story as much as my son and my father did. I’m grateful to both of them for inspiring me in their own ways.

1787 – Glocester, Rhode Island
In the small, rural town of Glocester, which will one day become known as Burrillville, lived a beautiful, wealthy, young woman named Emily Pratt. Emily lived with her widowed father and sister, Anna, on the family’s farm. Emily had fair skin and wavy blonde hair, unlike her sister who had inherited their late mother’s fiery red hair. Emily had a fondness for rose-scented perfume and flower gardening. She took great pride in her award-winning blooms. When it was too cold for gardening, Emily loved to help her sister host seasonal gatherings. The Pratt family’s annual Christmas party was among the town’s biggest events.
Many of the men in town were vying for Emily’s hand in marriage. Anna, who was busy trying to fill the shoes of their late mother, resented all of the attention her sister got. Emily, however, didn’t show interest in any of the suitors. She only had eyes for the town magistrate, Victor Evans. Victor was a tall, heavyset, well-dressed gentleman with light brown hair that was never out of place. He drank a bit too much, which showed in the redness in his cheeks and nose. He had been a bully in his younger
