Rod Kackley
It’s all about the story, as far as Rod Kackley is concerned. Whether it’s Shocking True Crime Stories or one of his many works of fiction. Rod wants to keep you turning pages and reading incredible tales of criminals, their victims, and their capture. Spoiler alert: No matter how long it takes, the bad guys rarely win. But it’s the criminal who is often the most compelling character. That’s true whether it’s “Mommy Deadliest,” the story of a woman who kills her children, or “The Murder of Thora Chamberlain,” the story of a teenage girl and her kidnapper. In Rod’s world of fiction, he spins yarns about “The Coffee Shoppe Killer, a woman who kills her lovers when they disappoint her. A teenage girl wraps a serial killer around her finger in “Go Big or Go Dead.” Then there’s “The Murder of Emma Brown,” where two young women go out to party one night, and one only returns home. Written in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Rod’s books and stories allow his readers to brush up against the world of crime without getting hurt. And it’s a heck of a ride!

Chapter One

––––––––
Andrew's wife is a bloody mess. God, it is awful. She is lying dead on their bedroom floor, face-down, covered in blood.
For a few moments, Andrew holds out hope that it isn't Vanessa. He can't see her face because a blood-soaked plastic trash bag covers her head. But in his heart, Andrew knows it has to be her. He can't help but recognize the body of his wife.
Who else could it be?
Andrew asks himself in these terrible first moments. It has to be somebody else, right? This body can't be Vanessa's. After all, she isn't supposed to be home. Andrew had taken their one-year-old daughter out of the house a few hours ago so that Vanessa could go work out at the gym.
Andrew took the baby, Adrianna, to a friend's home in Saugus, not far from where he and his little family live in Revere, Massachusetts. His plan was to do a carpentry job. It was a 'take your daughter to work’ field trip.
What a great idea!
The child, Adrianna, was an angel. Everything was going to plan until Andrew’s mother-in-law, Karen Masucci, called. She was in a panic after trying and failing to raise Vanessa on her cell phone. She demanded Andrew go home to check on Vanessa.
Andrew didn’t go home, immediately. First, with his daughter in her car seat, he drove around for a couple of hours and made a stop in East Boston.
Andrew finally calls his mother-in-law when he gets home and keeps her on the phone while he searches the house. Andrew's walking through the house slowly calling out to Vanessa, praying she'll answer back.
No answer. Maybe Vanessa's not here,
Andrew says. Why would she be home?
Why isn't she answering her phone?
Karen counters.
Andrew says he doesn't know, but he guesses that maybe the gym had been too busy. Maybe Vanessa turned off her phone or left it in a gym locker where it's buzzing and humming away every time you call, he thinks.
Maybe. Maybe.
There has to be a reason Vanessa isn't answering her phone,
Karen stresses. Andrew doesn't want to admit it, but he can't help but agree.
Andrew goes through every room before he finally walks into the master bedroom. He doesn't admit it to himself, but Andrew knows what he is going to find.
Even though Andrew had never been around a dead body outside of a funeral home or seen a corpse before, the smell, which had been getting worse the closer he got to the bedroom, is now overwhelming.
Now, finally in the bedroom, Andrew sees the source of the horrible odor permeating his home. There is a dead body, the corpse of a woman on the floor, right in front of him.
Is it Vanessa? No, he pleads with God, it can't be her. He describes the scene to his mother-in-law, who is still on the phone.
It's not that he wants to tell her about the gruesome scene. But Andrew just has to talk to someone. He can't keep this inside.
Blood is everywhere. Brownish-red drops of blood, on the walls and the floor,
Andrew tells her.
Oh my God, it's not her, is it?
Karen pleads. She's hoping for the same miracle Andrew's praying for. Please let it be someone else, anyone else.
