Chapter One
It was October 31, Halloween of last year. Children and parents of all ages were trick or treating along Maple Avenue in the early evening. The street lights were starting to come on. The leaves on the trees were mostly brown. There were small piles on the ground that had fallen. Some of the smaller children kicked the brown leaves as they walked by. Among the children were Marvin Bowen, his best friend Neil Johnson, and John Smith. They were fifteen years old and sophomores at Shore High School. Marvin was dressed as a zombie, Neil was dressed as Frankenstein, and John was dressed as Dracula. They were carrying orange trick or treat bags and small flashlights.
Marvin was your average teenager. He had straight brown hair with glasses. He loved Halloween and could never get enough of it. He loved dressing up for Halloween. He always spent a lot time doing his makeup and costume. His skin was a pale greyish color with fake scars and fake blood that looked real. His scraggly hair matched along with his ripped suit.
Neil was a good looking teenager with blond hair and blue eyes. All of the girls liked Neil. He was very popular in school. He enjoyed watching a good Frankenstein movie. He was wearing green makeup and had fake bolts sticking out on the side of his neck. He had fake stitches across his forehead.
John was your average shy teenager. He had red curly hair with freckles and thick glasses. He enjoyed comic books over Halloween. He always looked up to Marvin and Neil and tried to fit in. He dyed his hair black and had it slicked back. He wore a long black cape down to his knees and had false teeth that made him speak with a lisp.
The first house that they walked up to was a blue house. It had a concrete sidewalk that led to the house. Grass can be seen growing between the cracks. The house belonged to Mr. Jones. He was a retired police officer. The house had Halloween ornaments on the windows glowing from the soft yellow lights inside. Marvin rang the doorbell. Mr. Jones answered the door. He was a stocky bald man.
Trick or treat!
Marvin, Neil, and John yelled.
Mr. Jones gave them candy bars from an orange Halloween bowl that had witches and bats on it that he was holding. Here you go. One for you, one for you, and one for you.
Thank you!
Marvin, Neil, and John then walked next door to a yellow house that belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson. The grass looked like it was just cut. The yard looked well maintained. There was a large pumpkin on the front porch. Neil rang the doorbell. Mrs. Jackson answered the door. She was a middle aged woman and a math teacher at Shore High School. She wore glasses and had long blonde hair.
Trick or treat!
Marvin, Neil, and John yelled.
Oh, aren't you kids precious.
Mrs. Jackson gave them chocolate bars. Here you go. Have fun!
Thank you!
Marvin, Neil, and John then walked next door to a brown house that was decorated for Halloween. The house belonged to Agatha, a sixty year old woman and the librarian at Shore High School.
The house had a small graveyard with coffins in the front yard, spider webs all over the house with spiders, ghosts and skeletons hanging from the roof, pumpkins on the front porch, yellow eyes looking through holes in the wall, and a witch cooking over a black cauldron.
Check out this house! This is how my house should be decorated.
Marvin said.
Yeah, this is really cool.
Neil said.
Marvin went to ring the doorbell but there wasn’t one there so he knocked on the door. Agatha answered the door dressed in a witch costume. She wore a black witch’s hat with long black curly hair draped down to her shoulders. She had on green makeup and several warts on her face.
Trick or treat!
Marvin, Neil, and John said.
You kids look so cute dressed in your costumes.
Agatha said.
Thanks. I like your costume too. It looks so real.
Marvin said.
Why thank you.
Agatha said as she fluffed her long curly black hair.
A large white bowl of candy was sitting on a dark wooden table inside the doorway. Agatha lifted her hands and said, Abracadabra Hocus Pocus Ala Kazam.
Three pieces of candy levitated out of the bowl. She motioned her hands to their trick or treats bags. The candy followed her motions and the candy fell into each of their bags. Marvin, Neil, and John watched the candy as it left the bowl and went into their
