MY grandmother was a formidable Victorian whom I feared more than I loved, and it is a matter of interest to me that I remember so many things she said when I spent so much of my childhood trying hard not to listen to her. Although I never recall her forgiving me anything, I recall with surprise and perhaps envy that she was often tolerant of strangers and near strangers whose behavior seemed unacceptable to me. Rude waitresses or testy shopgirls could always count on my grandmother's compassion. Even arrogance in the great and snobbery in the less-than-great would earn my grandmother's cover-all phrase of understanding. I was not to be offended by these seemingly obnoxious people because, according to my grandmother, their behavior was simply a form of timidity.

Why she did not extend her understanding to me, I did not know—I, who was truly timid and would have loved to have it be the excuse for all my unlovely behavior. But in my grandmother's eyes, the rest of the world was timid; I was unregenerate. Now, whether I was and/or am unregenerate is not within my province to judge, but I can surely decide whether or not I am timid. Am I subject to fear? Easily alarmed? Timorous? Shy? Yes to all of the above. If only my grandmother could have recognized it—a near classic case.
