About this ebook
Bestselling author Katie McGarry’s trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.
They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.
The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.
A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she's psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.
Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…
"A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love." —New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins
"Gritty and real, Only a Breath Apart is a story of hope conjured from pain, strength drawn from innocence, and love earned from self-respect. Beautiful, poignant, and fierce.”—Kristen Simmons, critically acclaimed author of the Article 5 series

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5"Only a Breath Apart" was a hard-hitting, moving read that had me hooked from the start. It was written with feeling and depth, and the characters touched my heart. The physical, emotional, mental and verbal abuse throughout the novel had my stomach churning on many an occasion.I loved Jesse and Scarlett. They were childhood friends who had a falling out and had to learn to trust again. The were broken, flawed and made mistakes, but I was invested in both their lives. Their pain, loneliness and struggles felt real, and their connection to each other was amazing; they just belonged together.Jesse was a breath of fresh air and I adored him. Despite the life he was living, he was pure goodness and he touched me with the way he cared, helped and listened, not only to Scarlett, but his other friends as well. He allowed Scarlett to set the boundaries and never once did he try to overstep them.Despite living in constant fear and feeling as though she had no control of her life, Scarlett was such a strong character. She was compassionate, kind and full of love, and I admired her for the choices she ended up making. Sadly, I also felt every emotion she felt when she watched her father physically abuse her mother. My biggest complaint about this book was the psychic element. It's not my thing, but I did love the connection both Jesse and Scarlett had with the land. Also, I would have liked V's story to have been fleshed out more. I was left wondering what was wrong with her. Hopefully, she will get a novel of her own soon.Even though "Only a Breath Apart" was an emotionally raw read dealing with some harsh issues, it was also a book about courage, hope, forgiveness and growing up. An emotional and heartfelt read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Scarlett needs to escape her home but it feels like she has no options. Dad is controlling and emotionally abusive. Jesse needs Scarlett’s vote to keep his farm but he broke off their friendship three years ago. Can their relationship be repaired enough to help them both?
I have loved every Katie McGarry book I’ve ever read, and this one is no exception. There is romance, drama, and a bit of magical realism in this one.
