About this ebook
Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America is a definitive look at race in America. From the beginning of writing the constitution, the race has been a factor in the US. Kendi explores how race relationships have developed from 15th century Europe when they first developed in the context of colonization and then spread throughout the world, including America. He does it through biographies of five renowned American personalities who were openly racist, anti-racist thinkers and activists: Cotton & Mather, Thomas Jefferson, William Lloyd Garrison, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Angela Davis.
Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America was published in 2016 by Nation Books and has won the National Book Award for Nonfiction as well as the Boston Globe Best Book of 2016. In addition, the book also made it to the bestseller lists in The New York Times and Washington Post.

Reviews for Stamped from the Beginning

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5As the title *clearly*states* this is a book of 'Conversation Starters' for Dr. Kendi's book. Negative reviews pointing out this glaringly obvious fact should be ignored, if not completely deleted.
In review of the content:
In my opinion, the questions offered here could certainly initiate deep conversations between folks who are willing to address their racist views, however, I would likely use this book as a curated list of journal prompts to check myself and how I'm navigating through the seas of racism toward an anti-racist shore. The book may also be beneficial for use in a book club.
In review of the authorship / formatting:
In my opinion, the content could have used an objective proofread for typos and structure, though I may be the only reader distracted by such things. (I'm working on this with my therapist! LOL!) I was also mildly annoyed by the lowercase "b" in "black" when referring to people. The APA states this should be capitalized. This is not the hill I would die on, however, as it may just be me!
Overall:
Good and I'm appreciative for this type of book to confront and address this LONG overdue conversation. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To the previous review poster: If you read the BOOK you should have seen that this is a Conversation Starter series and NOT the actual book. There is also a Summary series. Now go find the actual book and give it an honest review.

Introducing Stamped from the Beginning
The title ‘Stamped from the Beginning’ comes from the speech of Jefferson Davis given in 1860. In his speech, he objected to funding education for black people and claimed that the inequality of the white and black races was stamped from the beginning. But in reality, the US notions of racial inequality goes even farther back. When Richard Mather and John Cotton, Puritan ministers, made their lives in America, they came armed with the belief that Puritans were superior to everyone else. This laid the foundation for racial inequality in the US.
However, this was not the only factor. The slave trade had already been active with Arabs and Europeans fighting over the spoils. Most of the slaves came from Saharan Africa. Kendi describes how racist theory with Africans and Eastern Europeans at the bottom was first put forth by Ibn Khaldun of Tunisia as an excuse for Islamic enslavement. This laid the foundation for the racist theories that Europeans would later build on. Kendi also mentions Leo Africanus, an African enslaved and then working with the Pope, who propounded racist theories in his work, Descriptions of Africa, which became Europe’s reference point. He also discusses Shakespeare’s works in which he demarcates black people as
