Andrea Pearson

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 1⁄2 languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.Andrea has published three books.

    Chapter One

I don’t know how long it took me to return to the compound from the marketplace. I entered a sort of trance brought on by the effects of the nightshade tattoo as I pulled the wagon of food and water behind me. I was neither fully awake nor asleep, barely coherent enough to continue. I must not have reached the seven days—otherwise, I would’ve collapsed in the middle of the empty road and slept.

My vision tunneled as I passed through the huge gate, walked by the main hut, and reached the door nearest the slave quarters.

Getting the wagon down the stairs and into the hallway that led to the slave quarters was a challenge, but I managed it. I pulled it to the hut, where I collapsed on the floor, eyes shut.

I heard Olivia rush to my side, and she touched my cheek gently. Oh, my word. What happened?

I ran into some men who didn’t like me.

    Do you need anything?

I shook my head. Get everyone their food and water.

    Okay.

I heard her run off, and I cracked my eyes open. She quickly dispersed the supplies, pouring water in the woman’s mouth while I lay spread-eagle on the ground, staring up at the adobe-type ceiling and a light that was flickering.

Do I need to sleep the whole week? I asked.
