    PREFACE

As I write, we are going through an unprecedented crisis caused by the Coronavirus (or COVID-19, so-named after its starting date). Some countries are still in the throes of this virus. Countries have been on lockdown; shops, services, cultural centres and entertainment were ordered to close. Businesses were told to have their employees, where possible, work from home. People have been furloughed or laid off.

Our global economy came to a screeching halt. Companies are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Some have gone out of business already. Governments have handed out emergency funds and loans in order to keep small businesses afloat and provide financial relief schemes for their citizens.

The Coronavirus has caused untold suffering and loss of life. Now, little by little, strict distancing and assembly rules are being relaxed. Governments look with trepidation at whether the restrictions have been relaxed too soon and whether the virus pandemic will return with a vengeance.

Some people were facing debts prior to the crisis; now most people are. Those who were already in debt are crushed under the sheer size of their present, ever increasing debt. Fear has set in for many. How will I pay my rent? How will I cover my mortgage payments? How will I feed my family? These are burning questions for those who have lost their income due to the crisis. There are no easy answers. We do suspect that as businesses start operating again people will get rehired. It will be a slow recovery and not everyone will be working right away.

Now, more than ever, it is crucial to strategize on getting and staying out of debt. When we are preoccupied with daily survival, it is hard to think straight. It can be helpful, however, to start putting our mind and energy towards rebuilding. It may have a therapeutic effect and help focus our minds on better times ahead. By working out possible solutions, even if they are still in the future, we are in a better position to get out of debt quicker than when we wait for circumstances to force decisions on us. By being proactive, we avoid the victim trap or self-pity, which only make us more desperate.

One thing I’d like us to stop – right now – is accepting this awful, unhelpful and false motto: This is the new normal. NO! There is no such thing as a new normal. Yes, we are going through some tough, painful times; yet, these too, shall pass. Yes, things may not be quite the same as before but there will be a return to normalcy. What we can do, is improve our lives, and that of our loved ones, once the worst of this crisis has passed. It is up to us to take the proverbial bull by the horns, and use our incredible minds to recreate, renew and rebuild. Getting out of debt is key. Imagine if after the Great Depression people had accepted the situation as The new normal! People would never have got out of that Great Depression with such a mindset. Maybe we should counter these glib sayings with our own. For instance, we could name it, Creating my new future, Improving on the previous NORMal. It is insidious, what those defeatist sayings do to our subconscious. We must resist them at all costs! "As s/he thinks within him/herself, / so s/he is". If you are a Christian reading this, know that you have empowering sayings coming straight out of Jesus’ mouth. Now is the time to take them at face value.

For those who are in debt for the first time, due to loss of employment or income, the road will be easier to travel and the debt-free outcome more attainable. For those who are devastated by debt upon debt, the road will be harder. Nonetheless, a debt-free life will be achievable; it may take just a little longer and it will take an absolute desire to be and stay debt-free.

There are three things that each one of us has to do:

    Don’t give up!

    Don’t give up!

    Don’t give up!

    Corona Pandemic Fallout Preamble

If you belong to the many who found themselves unemployed from one day to the next, due to the Coronavirus, you are probably still in shock and scrambling around trying to figure out how to keep it all together.

Depending on how quickly you can get back to work or find work, you will have to be twice as careful to keep afloat, without resorting to maxing out your credit card(s).

You might be tempted to panic buy the basic necessities for you and your family. You may experience a period of depression and absolute powerlessness, which can be very debilitating. Allow the emotions to wash over you: acknowledge the pain, anger, fear, frustration, and whatever other sensation well up. Whatever your situation, you will need to stay strong. Know that this too shall pass; as trite as this may sound, it will pass, even if you and your family have to go through extreme times. Keep your eyes focused on just one task, one issue at hand. Be prepared for the long-haul. This situation will take time.

Research all federal, state/provincial COVID-19 relief programs, where you might qualify for financial support. Look at what is available in your county, district and city. Tap into support groups and associations that may have sprung up during this pandemic. Look at what local banks, taxation agencies and lending organizations are offering, as temporary extensions and relief measures. Check the barter section in this workbook to tide you over (See Building Block 7).

If you are a Christian, now is the time to grow your faith. Be promise-oriented and not problem-oriented. The Lord promised to be by your side – He didn’t, however, promise a life without challenges and difficult moments.
