About this ebook

Even before the original Frostgrave rulebook landed in players' hands, its artwork, previewed in the run-up to release, attracted widespread attention and acclaim. Today, some eight volumes, two novels, and multiple boxed sets of plastic miniatures later, Dmitry and Kate Burmak have produced more than 85 illustrations, guided by the concepts developed by Frostgrave creator Joseph A. McCullough. Together, these three have breathed life into the Frozen City, depicting the wizards, warriors, and creatures that call it home.

With behind-the-scenes content, including concepts, sketches, work-in-progress shots, and commentary from the creators, this lavish volume features all the artwork produced for Frostgrave from the rulebook that started it all to the Perilous Dark supplement.

    INTRODUCTION

Because my name is on the cover of the rulebook, I tend to get all the credit for the success of Frostgrave but, in truth, I have been extremely fortunate to have the help of numerous other talented individuals. The first of these is Phil Smith, the series editor and Head of Osprey Games, who first decided to take a chance on the game, then to really 'go big' on it, and who has helped guide its journey. A huge thanks is also owed to Nick Eyre of North Star Military Figures, who really pushed to do figures for the game and whose 'Nickstarter' pre-order campaigns really helped announce it to the gaming world. Then there is the figure-painting legend, Kev Dallimore, who is responsible for most of the photography in the books. And, of course all the wonderful and talented figure sculptors, and the Osprey design team, and, and, and… You see my point.

Of all the other contributors, though, none have influenced the look and feel of Frostgrave as much as the artists, Dmitry and Kate Burmak. I honestly don't remember how Dmitry was originally selected for the project. I think Phil found his portfolio online, liked his work, and showed it to me. However it came to pass, it now feels like Fate. Somehow, Dmitry just seemed to inherently understand the Frostgrave setting. I have always had difficulty thinking in purely visual terms, and thus writing art briefs has always been a challenge for me. Thankfully, Dmitry was able to take my scattered notes, fill in the missing details, and create something better and, strangely, more 'Frostgrave' than I had ever imaged.

Dmitry says he was surprised when a second Frostgrave book was commissioned (and a third, and a fourth), but I honestly don't think that would have been the case without his gorgeous illustrations. In fact, the success he helped create almost overwhelmed him, and I remember the email in which he asked if he could enlist some help. Thankfully, it just so happened that his wife, Kate, is also a supremely talented artist, so we jumped at the opportunity to get her take on Frostgrave as well.

In the world of gaming, it is rare for a single artist (or even a pair) to provide all the artwork for a long series of books, and I hope that Dmitry and Kate are as proud of the body of work they have created as I am happy to have that work associated with my game. This book is a celebration of what they have accomplished and a showcase of their talent, imagination, and hard work. In the pages that follow, Dmitry, Kate, and I have offered a few words about each piece of artwork to feature in the Frostgrave series.

Whatever these two great artists go on to do next, I am sure they will succeed, and continue to wow audiences with their amazing creations. I am incredibly fortunate that they have given so much of their time and talent to Frostgrave, and I have hugely enjoyed working with them. They are not only supremely skilled in their craft, but also kind, generous, and humble. I could not have wished for better partners.

It is very difficult to summarize such a long-term collaboration with Osprey Games in only a few lines. Frostgrave was a turning point in my life, and I am very grateful to Joe and Phil for the opportunity to participate in the creation of the game.

When I first received an invitation to illustrate a new book for Osprey, I really could not believe it. A whole book, containing only my drawings? How cool is that? It was a dream come true! I poured myself into the work. I dressed like the characters, posed for the camera, and made small models of the environment. I had a lot of fun. It helped that the setting was very close to me. In Moscow, snow can lie for half a year, and frosts are not uncommon. All of this has been a familiar part of my life since childhood.

I admit that I was surprised when Frostgrave became a series. Suddenly, instead of a one-time job, I got regular work. Another dream come true! Each new book brought new challenges, with the stories becoming more and more interesting.

At some point, I realized that it was getting hard for me to cope with all the work, so my dear Kate came to my rescue. Before then, we had often worked on the same projects, in the office and freelancing, so we had a good sense of teamwork. Even our drawing style is similar. We can always help each other, suggesting ways out of a difficult situation. It was wonderful when Kate worked with me on the visuals for the game.

I hope you enjoy the paintings in this book. For me and Kate, Frostgrave is more than just a game – it is many wonderful years of exiting adventures.
