Hop Sing`s Hoe Down
Stewart, Roland and the Hop Sings drove along slowly as Dump Truck drove the trade wagon along at a brisk trot. Roland had commented many times how it was a miracle David’s truck still ran and had of all things a working air conditioner.
HeDo had got permission from his family to ride on the wagon with his big buddy Dump and everyone was somewhat patient about Dump occasionally letting the boy take the reins, as Dump attempted to teach him how to work the team of horses pulling the wagon. This was no small feat as the boy didn’t understand English and seemed to want the horses to go faster by slapping them with the reins, which Dump quickly took from him when he did so.
The child was beaming and laughing though, and Dump was grinning himself and turning and waving at everyone that he had things under control, as the horses sped up and then he slowed them back to the pace he wanted to maintain, so as not to overtire the team.
What do you reckon he is going to do with all that food?
Roland asked Stewart.
I don’t know them that well, but I guess they will share some and keep some for their personal use.
Stewart said glancing at the Hop Sings quietly chatting in the rear of the truck in that odd to western ears sing song voice of their native land and language.
I reckon they fancy themselves going to be traders, if they can get Dump to help with the lingo.
Roland said contemplating how they were prepared to start up some kind of business when he first met them.
I wouldn’t put it past them; they are quite clever and industrious. I just hope that those trade ground folks don’t try to take advantage of them or be mean to them.
Melanie said considering how some of the country folk in the south had preconceived notions or prejudices towards anyone they deemed foreign. Hell, she thought. Some of these small towns just didn’t accept anyone moving into them unless your great grandfather was buried in one of the town’s cemeteries.
I doubt anyone would bother them, if that big heathen of a man Dump was around.
Roland said laughing while looking at He Do trying to sit with his arm around Dump. He might as well have been trying to hug a Volkswagen for all the reach the boy had on Dumps girth.
Roland, you said the roads were bad around where you came from. How did you manage to make it safely here?
Stewart said contemplating traveling the same roads towards the lake and David’s group.
We brought in two wagons and had 4 guards on horseback too. We travel a bit off the main roads when we can and run messengers up and down the roads in advance mostly.
Roland said thinking about how even that level of security was not much if someone had actually decided to ambush them. You can’t get a horse rig turned around on a road very easily, and skirmishing off a horse was not like how the old westerns on TV showed it.
I suspect someone could just sit off in a field and take us all out sniping, if they had a mind to. We brought along a couple dogs and they can kind of sense danger or smell folks, but it’s a precarious situation anyway to move about. A lot of folks now are just plain sick in mind and body these days and although there are less of them to worry about, you still get groups of crazies to worry about.
Roland said watching Dump speeding up the team to give the boy a thrilling ride.
He better not get them horses lathered.
Roland said starting to roll the window down and stick his head out to holler at Dump but he realized he wasn’t going to get them up to a full gallop.
When are you coming back again?
Stewart asked.
I have been thinking on that. I might hang around Philburn’s and Martha’s a week or so and then, if you had a mind to, you could take me home in this truck and I could show you the way myself to get to my place.
Roland said playing with the air conditioner vent so it blew right on his face.
I think we could arrange that. You don’t live too far and I could make a day or overnight trip out of it and be back to Martha’s in a flash.
Stewart said contemplating an interesting road trip.
We turn off up here, that is if you don’t know already, but wave at Dump to stop the team now so I can talk to him.
Stewart said.
Roland hung out the window and hollered at Dump to pull over and Stewart stopped the truck.
Dump, I have a notion to go see that Lithia spring you said wasn’t far away, before I go to Martha’s if you don’t mind.
Stewart told him.
Sure you can do that. Roland can show you the way, I am not sure if I can tell the Hop Sings what it is that’s going on though.
Dump said looking at
