    Introduction:

    Opportunity in

    the Pandemic

    ––––––––

There is one consolation in being sick, and that is the possibility that you may recover to be in a better state than you were ever in before.

    Henry David Thoreau

    ––––––––

I launched my health business last year with a simple mission: help people with Hashimoto’s disease enjoy a better quality of life by improving their diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep.  The COVID-19 pandemic that has taken hold of the world has uprooted our way of life, and for many people, uprooted their health.  My new and more urgent mission has become helping people with Hashimoto’s take actions to be as healthy as possible to maximize resistance to this deadly virus.  The Hashimoto’s Handbook will show you how to take care of your immune system and give your thyroid the support it needs to function at its best.

As I put the finishing touches on this book, the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States is more than 5.6 million. Worldwide, over twenty-two million cases have now been reported.[1]  The real number of cases is probably magnitudes higher based on test positivity rates.  If you are terrified by this once in a century pandemic, you are not alone.  There is still much about the novel coronavirus and COVID-19, the disease it causes, that we do not know.  What we do know is that people with underlying health conditions and people who are immunocompromised tend to have higher rates of hospitalization and mortality.  Put another way, the better your immune system functions, and the better your overall health, the greater the likelihood that you will be spared the worst symptoms if infected by the coronavirus.

We also know that obesity and high blood pressure are conditions that tend to worsen the effects of COVID-19.  It is important to get your weight and your blood pressure to healthy levels.  The steps I outline in this book to support your immune system and your thyroid are steps that align with a healthy weight and ideal blood pressure.

Our brains have an innate negativity bias honed over millions of years of evolution. This reality is never lost on the media, but despite the stories that fill the news cycles about adults in good health who tragically succumb to the disease, COVID-19 is not a death sentence for people who get infected.   Nothing in life is guaranteed, and anyone of us, even in excellent health, could get infected by the coronavirus and face a difficult medical outcome. However, when you have finished reading this book, I want you to feel empowered and confident, instead of fearful and hopeless.

I want you to continue to take the virus seriously.  Practice the physical-distancing guidelines recommended by health experts.  Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly.  If you feel sick, stay home and self-isolate.  But I want you to feel confident that you are healthy enough to maximize your chance of a good outcome if you get infected.

Hashimoto’s disease affects us in different ways.  Some people respond well to thyroid medications like Synthroid and levothyroxine and generally feel well.  Other people suffer for years and, despite taking medication daily, struggle with fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, weight gain, inability to lose weight, mood swings, depression, and diminished sex drive.  If you’re in the latter camp, I hope that after reading this book not only will you be armed with the tools to be more resilient to COVID-19, but you will also begin to experience relief from some of these symptoms.

We are all in this battle together.  You and I and everyone reading this book are part of a community of people that have been dealt the difficult hand of disease.  The health and vitality many people take for granted are things for which we must work.  I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s when I was fourteen years old.  My condition was so severe that fluid accumulated around my heart, my left ventricle enlarged, and my cholesterol shot up over three-hundred.  My TSH registered 314 mU/L, compared to the normal range of 0.4 - 4.0 uM/L and optimal range of 0.45 – 2.5 mU/L.[2]

For me, medication was not a silver bullet.  I struggled with persistent fatigue and brain fog for twenty-three years until I learned how to eat, exercise, sleep, and manage stress in ways that support my immune system and thyroid.  Once I got these four pillars right, my fatigue and brain fog quickly disappeared, and my energy and vitality came roaring back to life.  The last time I felt this great mentally and physically was back in my teenage years before my Hashimoto’s diagnosis.

In this book, I will share the tools that I used to rejuvenate my health and thrive with Hashimoto’s so that you do not have to spend a couple decades figuring out how to do the same.

The first two chapters provide an overview of how your thyroid works and how autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s develop.  Bear with me as I attempt to relate some of the science textbook language into concepts that are meaningful.  At the end of each chapter, I will distill all the content into a handful of summary points, so if you want to skip the biology lessons in the first couple of chapters and head directly to the fun part of the book, my chapter summaries will arm you with enough basic information to sail through the rest of the book.
