About this ebook
Updated edition with two new chapters!
The Bible is clear that we face three different types of opposition while attempting to successfully navigate life as Ambassadors for Christ. Our opposition is identified in Scripture as "the world" (1 John 2:15-17), "the flesh" (Romans 7:15-25), and "the devil" (1 Peter 5:8-9). The sad reality is that too many Christians lose more battles than they win and endure their walk with God rather than enjoy it because they often don't recognize how opposition through spiritual warfare actually works.
More importantly, they have no idea how to effectively and efficiently respond to these attacks. Scripture nowhere indicates that a wish, a hope, a clichÉ, or a sincere guess represent adequate responses to attacks from these three very real enemies. Christians must be strategic in their responses to these clearly defined enemies, learning how to fight biblically rather than just sincerely.
In Spiritual Warfare, Dr. Karl Payne—pastor of Leadership Development and Discipleship at Antioch Bible Church and former Chaplain for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks—has written a guidebook for recognizing and responding to spiritual warfare that is simple, biblical, and transferable. Pragmatically speaking, the materials in this book are biblically sound, battle tested, and they work.
As Christians we are supposed to live life as victors, not victims. It is past time we learn how to consistently walk our talk in the midst of conflict rather than passively sing songs or daydream about courageous Christian living.

New Edition
Iwrote Spiritual Warfare several years ago in an attempt to help Christians understand that spiritual warfare is biblical, that it still occurs today on a daily basis, and that Christians are just as susceptible to spiritual warfare attacks as non-Christians. In fact, Christians are probably more apt to be on the receiving end of spiritual warfare attacks because Satan and his minions are smart enough to focus their most clever and diabolical attacks against the enemies they consider the greatest threat to completing their destructive mission. Since Jesus Christ represents a demon’s greatest enemy (or worst nightmare), it should come as no great shock that they would consider His faithful disciples their enemies too.
What am I doing wrong that I am attacked so often through spiritual warfare?
Maybe nothing! Jesus was perfect, and Satan certainly attacked Him (Matthew 4:1-11).
What has changed on this battlefield since I first wrote this book? Not much, except the blatant and brazen onslaught and glorification of anything occultic or demonic in our country. Casper, the friendly ghost, and Bewitched have been replaced by walking and talking with the dead, evil witches, good witches, Satan, mediums, ghostbusting, curses, and a fascination with the dark side that defies common sense. This naïve, dangerous game of playing with the devil and his emissaries is going on in the name of good, fun, healthy, entertainment.
Since the original version of Spiritual Warfare was published, a healthy change of attitude among a number of solidly evangelical and biblically orthodox Christians has substantially grown and as a result, more and more people are learning how to deal with this subject rather than just ignoring it. Scripture is clear that spiritual warfare is a biblical reality that transcends denominational and theological traditions. Demonic spirits do not care what church you choose to attend or what spiritual gifts you profess to possess.
The subject of spiritual warfare is now considered mainstream for which I rejoice and praise God. It is my desire to use this book as a discipleship training tool to continue teaching others how to effectively and efficiently recognize and respond to attacks from our very real and powerful enemies, identified in Scripture as the world, the flesh and the devil. It would be my prayer that each of these Christian men and women would in turn do the same thing by finding faithful Christians to teach and train in a fashion that is consistent with 2 Timothy 2:2.
If I can do it, you can do it
is the heart of discipleship training and the Great Commission. Learning how to consistently and effectively identify and confront spiritual warfare opposition is one more part of discipleship training that needs to be mastered and shared with others. This new edition is designed as a very powerful tool to support that effort.
In the original preface, I shared a story about how a cancer scare motivated me to publish a manuscript that had been sitting in my office file for nearly a decade. At that time I asked myself, what projects do I need to complete if my race in life is to be shorter rather than longer?
One of the first projects I thought of was the manuscript in my file on spiritual warfare. The preparation and production of this book, moving from my desk file to bookshelves, could be another story on spiritual warfare in itself, but one I will forgo for now because I would rather talk about what God has accomplished through the publication of this book than how Satan or his helpers attempted to derail it.
God and Satan are not equals. Christians are on the side of Jesus Christ who has won this war. Demons are on the side of Satan who lost this war at Calvary. Consistent victory over the world, the flesh and the devil should be viewed by Christians as normal rather than novel. Our union with Jesus Christ guarantees the delegated authority and power promised to all true Christians in Luke 10:18-20. So why should we fear or run from this combat?
The challenge the Lord laid before me to get my manuscript published resulted in a profoundly simple and straight forward book that is both biblically sound and transferable. Many Christians have told me they have found it to be very helpful in thinking through the subject of spiritual warfare and demonization. Most typical information on the subject does not provide Christians with any clarity regarding how to actually recognize, respond, and apply what they have read in the midst of real battle. I represented just one more Christian pastor coming out of Seminary in 1980 who could quote verses on spiritual armor out of Ephesians 6:12-18, but was absolutely clueless how to apply this information in an actual battle with demonic spirits when I was suddenly confronted with a demonized person who stepped into my front room two years
