About this ebook
Dr Bukar Usman’s A Selection of Nigerian Folktales: Themes and Settings is a collection of 700 tales drawn from Nigeria’s diverse cultural and linguistic groups and translated into English to make their folkloristic, educational and entertainment value accessible to a wider audience. The first published book of Dr Usman’s Treasure of Nigerian Tales (TNT) anthologies, this book is unprecedented in other respects. It is the first pan-Nigerian anthology of folktales. Its 700 folktales, taken from all the geo-political zones, also make it Nigeria’s largest collection of thematically-classified folktales. There are 18 classifications or sections under which these stories are neatly presented, with each section preceded by a condensed, somewhat nuggety, “Thematic Snapshot”. There is a detailed preface by Dr Usman, who collated and edited the tales unearthed by diverse researchers; it offers a scholarly and cross-cultural insight into the relevance of tales in understanding and stabilizing our common humanity. Moreover, the editor’s expository preface competently introduces the reader, especially the non-Nigerian reader, to the tales’ cultural essence, nuances and universal imports.
In significant ways, this book further distinguishes itself from past collections by the cultural authenticity of the selected tales all of which were inter-generationally preserved by oral tradition. Many of them are appearing in print for the first time. They were all diligently collected from their oral narrators before being translated into English. This display of cultural sensitivity complements the editor’s vision of achieving translational equivalence while retaining, as much as possible, some of the stylistic devices basic to the orality of the original tales.
The 700 tales of A Selection of Nigerian Folktales: Themes and Settings monumentally capture the primordial imagination and folk wisdom of Nigeria’s various groups. It is evidently the most important collection of folktales from Nigeria since 1854, the year a potpourri of tales and proverbs from what later became a part of Nigeria was first published by a European missionary. A notable aspect of these tales is the universal nature and relevance of their themes and motifs.
