Appreciation
Gratitude and appreciation to Jennifer Sallit, MS, RD, PHD for her assistance with research.
Thank you to all of my clients, who have recorded their soluble fiber intake, shared their favorite high soluble fiber treats, and continued to provide me with inspiration through their success.
A special thank you my editors, family, friends, and colleagues who have heard about me writing this book –
for far too long!

If you, or someone you know, do not want to take medication to lower your cholesterol, or if you want to avoid developing high cholesterol, then the Soluble Fiber Solution is for you.
The Soluble Fiber Solution works best with men of all ages and women who are pre-menopausal. Women who are going through menopause, or who have gone through menopause may receive mixed results. Chapter 1: What Do I Have To Do?
If I told you that you could lower your LDL cholesterol by as much as 60 points in six to twelve weeks, without dieting, exercise, or medication, would you be interested? What if I told you it is easy, inexpensive, and painless. Would you think I was joking? Well, I'm not.
Has your doctor told you to lower your cholesterol? Maybe you know someone who needs to lower their cholesterol. Or maybe, you are looking to keep your cholesterol at a good or better level. It is estimated that 17-20% of Americans have elevated cholesterol levels. That’s one in five Americans, or about 25 million people!
The good news is that most people can lower their cholesterol effectively without the worry of possible side effects that can accompany medications. How: It is the Soluble Fiber Solution.
What I have learned while working as a dietitian in private practice is that lowering cholesterol can be easy for many people. Everything you need to get started is presented in this first chapter, and the background information and details are in the chapters that follow.
In the past, I have worked with many people who were trying to use a low fat diet and exercise to lower their cholesterol. Most of the results were not exciting, and I learned quickly that the low fat lifestyle is difficult for most people to maintain. I began to read newer information that suggested using food containing soluble fiber as a way to lower cholesterol. When I started working with this in my private practice I was shocked and pleased by the results.
When my patients’ doctor would order a second cholesterol test to check progress, the results were often amazing! Inspired by these initial findings, I began working more and more using soluble fiber to reduce cholesterol. The results are what you find in this short, simple book.
Will you be able to lower your cholesterol? My clients are always telling me how easy it is to make the simple changes recommended in this book. This is not a low fat meal plan, or one that involves eating foods that are drastically different from those you normally eat. Even the clients, who only half followed my advice have been able to lower their LDL cholesterol by 20 - 30 points, so read on!
Most elevated cholesterol values are due to a high level of Low-Density Lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is often referred to as the BAD
cholesterol. I often refer to the LDL cholesterol as Lousy cholesterol, so that my clients remember that LDL represents something that is not good. LDL is Lousy cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is the type of cholesterol that prescription medications such as Lipitor®, Zocor® and Mevacor® are effective in lowering. According to the Lipitor® website, Lipitor® lowers bad cholesterol by 39-60 %. If your LDL cholesterol was 160, (this is your LDL number not your total cholesterol number) lowering it 60% would bring it down to 96, a reduction of 64 points. Very importantly, you may be able to achieve such reductions with simple dietary changes and, without worrying about the risks of drug side
