In 2014 Martin and Deb Cartwright decided to build a car. Not just any old car. It had to be a vintage style sports car and it had to be theirs. Styled, built and then driven by them.

It was to be a joint enterprise. Their shared ignorance of automotive engineering was matched only by their determination to learn and to realise their dream.

The starting point was the 'Pembleton Brooklands'. Not a pre-built 'kit' for home assembly, but a self-build package developed by engineer Phil Gregory for amateurs, to enable anyone to build a car, constrained only by the limits of their imaginations.

As an encouragement to others and a thank you to the numerous amateur and professional specialists who enthusiastically helped them along their way, this book charts their progress with candour and humour.

If you have had ever had a dream of building a car, now is the time to 'pack your parachute and jump!'

For Deb

My life's co-pilot

1.    Introduction

Back in the 1980's, I had a diminutive citron green MG Midget. It was leaky, draughty and noisy, but I loved that daft little car as it made people smile and wave.

For those for whom self-reliance, common sense, resourcefulness and ingenuity have been snuffed out by professional risk assessors, hazard analysts and a suffocating social safety culture; this book is not for you. Instead, it is a tribute to the enthusiasm and ingenuity of genuine amateurs and an encouragement to those who dream.

Deb and I were complete novices when we started the Pembleton project. We really knew nothing about cars. We had never kicked a tyre or popped the bonnet on anything. We didn't know a coupé from a crankcase.

We were probably the first 'rookies' with zero automotive knowledge ever to build a Pembleton, and this book is designed to inspire others to do the same. There are plenty of enthusiasts out there in the real and cyber world who are only too willing to help. With us, they have been generous with their time, patience and expertise, and we threw ourselves on their mercy shamelessly, without once encountering a single rebuff or sneer, despite the   stupidity of our questions.

And what did we learn? The Pembleton Brooklands is a celebration of the individual and individuality. In a world where all cars look the same and where you are actively discouraged from taking personal responsibility for self-preservation, there is nothing so liberating and empowering as packing your own parachute and jumping into the unknown, and anyone can do it.

For those of you whose journey is at the very beginning, this book may help get you started. For those who have helped us along the way........ Thank you. And for all those who smile, wave and share our dream...........Welcome!

2.    The Quest

I couldn't find the sports car of my dreams so I built it myself. Ferdinand Porsche.

Deb and I wanted to build the car of our dreams.

In our ignorance we were unencumbered by preconceptions of automotive orthodoxy, so we were able to ignore the prejudices of the aficionados, and simply build what we liked.

Our inspiration both in spirit and in form came from a shared love of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'The Wind in the Willows', and 'Monte Carlo or Bust!', and of course the pioneering spirit of the glorious 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines'.

Who hasn't smiled delight at these automotive flights of fancy with their bulging headlight eyes, shiny toothed grilles and curving tails enjoying the freedom of the open road?  "The poetry of motion! The real way to travel! The only way to travel! Here to-day— in next week to-morrow! Villages skipped, towns and cities jumped— always somebody else's horizon! O bliss! O poop-poop! O my! O my!" (*Wind in the Willows. Kenneth Grahame).
