Amazon is the largest online retailer on the planet, particularly when it comes to books. It offers an unbelievable opportunity for authors to get their books into the hands of their ideal readers.

However, tens of thousands of new books are published to Amazon every single month. And the days of 100% organic visibility (i.e. Amazon selling your books for you!) are a long and distant memory.

It’s not all bad news though…

Organic visibility is still very much a thing and entirely possible; you just need to tickle the Amazon Algorithm (the inner workings of Amazon that decides how much visibility your book is going to receive) enough for them to take notice of your books and provide you with that coveted organic visibility and ultimately, organic sales too.

One of the way to achieve that is through Amazon Advertising; more commonly known as Amazon Ads.

It can be oh so tempting to dive into Amazon Ads, launch an ad and hope for the best. Bad move. You need a plan of action, a roadmap, a destination; ultimately, you need a strategy for your books and your author career as a whole.

Some authors launch Amazon Ads without a strategy and a plan, the ads fail, they decide that Amazon Ads don’t work and give up.

Maybe this scenario sounds familiar to you. If so, as you’re reading this book, perhaps you’ve had a change of heart, in which case, thank you for taking the time to invest in learning a new skill and deciding to give Amazon Ads another shot.

I know learning a new skill can be uncomfortable, but that’s because it’s outside of our comfort zone. However, it’s outside of our comfort zone that we achieve the most growth in our lives, so stick with it, keep learning; your time will pay you dividends in the future.

Amazon Ads is a skill in and of itself and I’m not going to beat around the bush, it will take time to master and there will be a good amount of testing required. So please don’t get disheartened or throw in the towel if your first 5-10 Amazon Ads, even your first 20 Amazon Ads, don’t achieve the results you’re looking for.

The results will come; I promise you that.

My whole premise for this book is to take you from where you are now with your current understanding and knowledge of Amazon Ads (which could be nothing at all or it could be a little) through to truly understanding the fundamentals of this incredibly powerful advertising platform.

To accomplish this, I’ve written the book in sequential order, from Day 1 all the way through to Day 7, with each new day building on the previous day.

I’ve also provided an Actionable Exercise for you to complete at the end of each day, that will help you to actually implement everything you’re learning throughout the book, including launching your first Amazon Ads Campaigns.

Learning on its own is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but without implementing what you’ve learned, you’re not going to move the needle in your author career, which is why these Actionable Exercises are so critical for you to complete.

Day 1: Understanding Amazon Ads


What Are Amazon Ads?

You’re reading this book, so I’m assuming that you already have a general idea of what Amazon Ads are. If you don’t have any idea what they are though, then that’s ok too.

In a nutshell, Amazon Ads allow you, the author, to position your books in front of your ideal readers on the Amazon book store and you pay Amazon for the privilege of being able to do so.

A little more specifically, Amazon Ads offer the opportunity to showcase your books on your other book pages/product pages, in Amazon’s search results when a reader types in a certain keyword/phrase, looks at a particular book on Amazon, or opens up their Kindle E-Reader or Kindle Fire Tablet.

There are 3 main ad formats when it comes to Amazon Ads:

Sponsored Product Ads

Sponsored Brands Ads

Lockscreen Ads

We’ll be diving much deeper into these Amazon Ads formats, targeting, as well as actually building and launching your first Amazon Ads, later on in this book. For now, though, let’s move onto the benefits Amazon Ads can bring to your author career and your business.

1. You pay per click - not per impression

If nobody clicks on your ad, you don’t pay. Now, we obviously want people to click on your ad so that you can make sales, introduce readers to you, your brand, your offers, your products and services, etc.
