Introduction

The division in our country surrounding politics is taking root and many times ORIGINATES in our churches. As a body of Christ, we are to be a representative of the Creator of the universe, the new Christ on earth representing the King to those He loves. We are called to be one body, reaching the world for Christ, and the Bible makes it clear that we are all not going to be the same:
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function.
- Romans 12:4
Could these different functions be applied to how we each view the political issues of our day? Could the different functions include how we each think the church should respond to our culture?
Inside the church, we often see people with different perspectives from us, possibly of a different political party, and we wonder, How can they believe, act, or think that way? How can they be a Democrat/Republican?
This book is an exploration of that question.
I have been inside of churches since I was young, and as the son of a pastor, I’ve seen my fair share of political squabbles inside the church, but it wasn’t until I became an adult that I realized the dangers inherent in political differences inside a church.
Having a young family of my own suddenly gave me the excuse,
or some might say, responsibility,
to determine my own opinions and to state what I believe to be true in the world. The election of 2008 caused me to question everything I believed about politics and put me on a search for the truth, not just what red (Republican) or blue (Democrat) said was the truth.
When the election of 2012 came around, I read dozens of books, spent months researching each candidate and issue, plus kept up with current events. I knew
what the right way to think was. I was shocked to find that few inside the church agreed with me. I was even more shocked to find out my tithe money was being funneled through my church to political movements I disagreed with at a fundamental level.
I met with the pastors of the church and discussed my concerns. I was appalled to hear their opposing thoughts on the political issues I saw as black and white. I, with no shortage of tears, left the church I loved dearly.
Many of the thoughts the pastors had spoken STILL haunt me to this day, not because I am appalled by them, but because they ring more and more true in my ears. As time passed, I began to see that those pastors, that I vehemently disagreed with, do indeed reflect my Creator and the heart I see that the God of the universe has in the Bible.
I haven’t lost my convictions of what is right and wrong, I haven’t lost my opinion on the political issues, but I’ve been trying to let myself see the issues from different vantage points. Not from the talking heads on a stage (heaven knows I can’t stomach that), but from the people inside the churches that are both Republican and Democrat. It amazes me that when you listen to the hearts of God’s people, no matter how different their political stance may be from yours, you can hear your Creator in their voice. They sing out God’s love for His people and His love of what is righteous.
I’ve come to feel that maybe God is bigger than red vs. blue—maybe the division in our church is not a result of our political differences, but our political differences are a result of our lack of unity.
The church I had left, due to political differences, was PERFECT for my family. We agreed on Christ, serving those in our community, loving others to heaven, and when I took my eyes
