Introduction

My seven-year-old is a competitive gymnast who trains 16 hours every week and is also a German Immersion student in grade three. Recently, her time management skills came under fire. I was forced to take a step back and imagine life from her perspective and try to evaluate how she must feel every single day. What came to mind was the feeling of being overwhelmed and the realization that her lack of time management skills was more complex than I had originally thought. I had to explore all the dynamics in her world to help identify all the blockages to her success and create strategies that would allow her to understand the importance of managing her time. I had to look at not just what was in front of me (e.g., unfinished class work or unmanaged floor routine in gymnastics) but what was causing her to move at a slower pace as well.

In doing so, I had to start with the following questions:

●  What did I do to contribute to the problem?

●  What personality traits does my daughter have that are detrimental to her success?

●  What personality traits does my daughter have that I can use to help her create better success?

●  How can I create links between school and sport to help her see the bigger picture?

●  How can I show and not only tell to help her understand true leadership?

Effective time management requires the right techniques. Your kid(s) should apply them in life in order to make the most of their time.

Here are some of the essential techniques that they should be able to master.

1. Make time management activity enjoyable

Time management for adults is totally different from what it means to children. It is not all about fixed time tables, tight schedules, and unending appointments. Making it fun for the kids is all you need to do. It is an activity that requires creativity in making every task look appealing and fun. Make it a game to gauge who can complete a simple task in the house that usually consumes more time, for instance. An activity that is as simple as putting on shoes, brushing your teeth, or packing school belongings can be included in the game or at least used as a reference in this setup. When designing the task calendar, make good use of beautiful stickers as well. Use different crayons to color the kids’ personal calendars and make them more fun. The more enjoyable it seems, the deeper they can comprehend the significance of sticking to the time schedule.

2. Start it early

Time management should be started before the onset of puppetry. Just make hay while the sun shines! Don't wait until it is too. The sooner you begin doing it, the better. You can start engaging a preschooler in completing simple tasks such as putting on clothes, brushing their teeth, or even cleaning up their most liked toys. Preschoolers can be engaged in finishing timed age-appropriate chores within the household.

3. Teach the kids how to time themselves

Having children who know how to read and tell time doesn’t necessarily mean that they are aware of how to measure it as well. Support the kids to set the beginning and ending time for their activities. Engage them in verbal time count down as they do a simple timed task until they can feel and internalize the concept of managing it.

By such activities, a kid will understand what a specific time such as 15 minutes means and how to proportionally quantify time for different tasks. The next time you order an activity to be done after 20 minutes, they will be capable of understanding the approximate time and getting the task done before the limit.

4. Involve the kids in designing the family calendar

Every family should have a footprint or calendar that guides all the family members’ commitments. However, it doesn’t seem practical to involve the extremely small activities of the kids on the calendar. Instead, let them give a list of all planned events such as choir practice, scout, gymnasts, etc. that they may do within the day, week, or month.

During the scheduling process, you should involve every family member, including the kids. Create a one unique with all of the events well-outlined. Allow everyone to learn of the others’ commitments and understand the activities to be carried out by each family member inside or outside the house. You can color code each person’s tasks to increase the attractiveness of your visuals. With such
