    About the Author

    Foreword

Ten years ago, my wife, Tonya, and I began a Celebrate Recovery ministry at The Harbor Church in Odessa, Florida. During the past decade, I have seen many come through our doors with hurts, hang-ups, and destructive habits that kept them from their God-given potential. Surprisingly, one of the most harmful habits I’ve seen over the years is food. Yes, food.

Food addiction is one of the most overlooked and accepted harmful habits in our society. I have seen many succumb to food addictions’ destructive results, leading to depression, low self-worth, poor body image, and compromised health.

You are about to read a book from my friend Brian Harner that will help you finally lose the weight you desire. I met Brian when he started attending The Harbor Church several years ago. He told me of his past struggles with weight and food and his miraculous recovery.

Brian has a passion for helping people like him overcome their struggles with food and weight. With wisdom from God’s word, Brian experienced victory over his food and exercise struggles, and he wants to share what he has learned with you.

Brian will challenge you to consider two Diet Rebel questions: Why do I overeat? Where do I want to go? The answer to these two Diet Rebel questions led Brian on a journey that guided him to achieve his permanent weight-loss goals.

Over the past twenty years, Brian uncovered what it takes to make lasting lifestyle changes and break the vicious dieting cycle. He found that the answers to the two questions are the key. The rest of the solution is a matter of planning and executing.

Diet Rebel is not a theological book, but it is based upon God’s design and qualified by science. Answering these two Diet Rebel questions is the most crucial part of the process but is not the end of the story. James 2:17 tells us, In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Once we answer the two Diet Rebel questions, we can take positive action to achieve our goals.

The book’s beauty is that Brian will keep you on track and help you achieve your long-term and short-term goals, which provides the framework for success. He explores the physical and psychological benefits of exercise and describes the relationship between calories, weight gain, and weight loss. He will also show you how to reward yourself in a fun way to keep you motivated on your Diet Rebel journey. Never again will you have to wonder how to manage calories to lose the weight you desire!

Most revealing is his personal story of overcoming depression, overeating, low self-worth, and poor health to accomplish weight loss and exercise goals that seemed, to most people, impossible to achieve. If you are serious and committed to losing weight, this book will equip you to achieve your impossible goals.

    Today Is My Favorite Day

    A Note to the Reader

I wasn’t always fat. I didn’t always have a love-hate relationship with food. My problems didn’t happen overnight.

When I was in the third grade, I was average-sized, even a bit on the thin side. Then, I broke my collarbone. During my recovery, I was unable to enjoy my usual, busy lifestyle. I filled the void with food. I put on the pounds. And not just a few.

This was the start of my struggle.

I continued to use food to comfort myself during times of loneliness and bullying. The pounds continued to build. My seventh-grade teacher called me Chubby Bubbles in front of the class. The kids continued the harassment outside of class. When I arrived home, instead of playing with friends, I ate alone. I would escape my life with food. As I grew older, my relationship with food shifted. I began high school within normal weight again. I did not use food as an escape. However, this would only last until I finished college.

I graduated college in 1989 from the Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. My childhood dream was to become an astronaut. Unfortunately, I did not possess the physical skills needed for that ambitious goal. My new dream job was being a programmer for a government defense contractor working on the Strategic Defense Initiative or NASA. After several interviews and just as many rejections, I settled for a software engineer position on a defense contractor’s business application project.

It was this job, and several others that followed, that was the catalyst for my significant weight gain. My workday was sedentary, and I did not exercise much after work. My schedule consisted of going to work and coming home. Occasionally, I went out with friends. We had a Monday night tradition of gathering at a bar called The Gingerbread Man for ten-cent wings and five-dollar pitchers of beer. I would easily polish off twenty wings along with a pitcher of beer.

I peaked at 260 pounds. Based on my small frame, that was a hefty load for my bones. Each year, I inched closer to prediabetes. My relationship with food was driving this deterioration. I was miserable. I was unhappy with my work life and even more disgusted with my personal life. This is how Diet Rebel was born. I hit rock bottom. I don’t want the same for you. No matter where you are in your journey, it is not too late to turn the car around.

One of my favorite stories is about a starfish. A man is walking along a beach. He comes upon a boy standing in the middle of a large pile of starfish washed up on the beach. The boy is throwing the starfish back into the ocean one by one.

The man says to the boy, What are you doing?

The boy answers, I’m helping the starfish.

The man responds, "There are too
