    New Friends

Buzzzz! The shrill clock alarm shattered the calm morning. Across the hotel room from Katy her friend Lyn was pressing the large pillow down over her head and ears like a giant mushroom.

Nine o’clock, Linny. Time to get up, Katy shouted. Pulling the pillow closer around her ears, a muffled voice from the other bed sputtered. I need at least another eight hours.

Let me put it this way, Katy persisted. Today is Disneyland. Suddenly the hidden figure sat up straight, and the white pillow sailed smoothly across the room. ‘Where are my slippers?" Lyn’s voice asked urgently, throwing her long legs over the side of the bed and poking her feet around the floor searching for them.

By now the sunlight was streaming into the room. Katy was already at the window, looking out. The water was glistening beyond the pale sand, and the seagulls were sailing over the blue water of the Pacific.

This was the first day of their trip to Southern California, and the two 17-year-old girls were determined to see everything. Friends since first grade, the two were inseparable.

Lyn was already pulling on some jeans, and searching through her suitcase for the right shirt. Let’s hurry and get down to breakfast, Katy urged her. It going to take us over two hours to drive up to Anaheim.

The girls were staying at the Hotel del Coronado practically on the beach. When they got down to the large room for brunch, it looked as if every seat had been taken.

Now we’re really going to get a late start! Lyn complained.

As they stood there, a small voice spoke up hesitantly, We have some room at our table, if you’d like to join us. Looking in the direction of the voice, the girls saw a woman dressed in a rather matronly blue dress, and two girls about their own age. The young blonde girl who had made the offer was already pulling out a chair for them.

Gee, thanks, said Lyn impulsively, at the same time pulling Katy over toward the table.

Sure you don’t mind? Katy asked, as they joined the trio. The young blonde girl introduced herself as Elise. She introduced her mother Anne Hardy, and the other girl as Cynthia.

It’s always crowded like this on Saturdays, Elise explained. The locals love this place, too. Not just the tourists.

Above them was a huge light fixture in the form of a crown, embedded with lights. Wow, look at that thing, Lyn gaped openly. I bet that weighs a thousand pounds!

They call this the Crown Room, Elise explained. The Hotel del Coronado was the very first building west of the Mississippi to have electricity. You should see it at Christmas. This whole place lights up like a palace.

The waitress approached, and noticed the girls looking up at the ornate ceiling. Beautiful isn’t it? she said looking up at the distinctive architecture. Then she added, "You know that light fixture is special too. It was designed by Frank Baum, who wrote The Wizard of Oz. Some people believe that this hotel with all its fairyland character was his inspiration for that book."

I can believe it, said Lyn, still fixed on the majestic light fixture.

The waitress offered them the option of special ordering or going to the buffet. The buffet, for sure, Lyn blurted out, seeing the long tables filled with omelettes, meats, and platefuls of sliced fruit. The others agreed. It felt like a Christmas morning, with one surprise after another.

So you girls are here by yourself? Mrs. Hardy asked, not sounding particularly approving.

Yes, Katy told her. We just flew in to San Diego yesterday, and plan to go up to Disneyland today, and come back to San Diego for the rest of our trip. There’s so much to see.

Doesn’t your mother mind you two girls out running around by yourself?

It was actually her idea, Katy offered. And my Aunt Judy lives just north of here, and also my cousin, so we have help nearby if we need it. And my friend Lyn’s mother was great about it too.

Dark haired Cynthia sat nearby, and spoke little.
