    Preface

Practice Makes Perfect: Beginning Spanish is a comprehensive, user-friendly program that provides extensive audio practice to introduce and reinforce the basic structures of Spanish. The program corresponds to one to two semesters of class-based instruction. It is designed for beginning learners of Spanish who want to master the basic structural patterns of the language and acquire a broad vocabulary that will be useful in communicating with native speakers of Spanish on a wide variety of topics. Dialogues and exercises reflect authentic, current language usage and touch on all areas of modern life including business and technology.

Practice Makes Perfect: Beginning Spanish is different in its design and conception from other language courses. It takes full advantage of the pedagogical potential of electronic media to deliver the content of the course both orally and in writing. It allows you instant access to all the material of the course, such as grammar explanations and vocabulary, so that you can customize your learning as you see fit.

The interactive features will motivate you and facilitate your mastery of the material. The program is outstanding for its accessibility and portability, which means you can practice Spanish at your convenience and go at your own pace.

    Structure and components

Practice Makes Perfect: Beginning Spanish is comprised of sixteen lessons, all structured in the same way. Each chapter opens with a list of the grammar points to be presented and practiced followed by Communication goals, which present the chapter’s objectives for desired learner achievement.

    Diálogos

Introductory diálogos present new vocabulary and grammatical structures targeted in the chapter. Each diálogo contains two to four exchanges. There are between four and nineteen diálogos in each chapter. Learners have instant access to both the written text of each diálogo and a recording of it done by native speakers with pauses for repetition. The diálogos offer delightful snatches of conversation in authentic settings. You meet real-life people at work and school, traveling, talking about their family and relationships, shopping, restaurants, entertainment, their daily routine, health, holidays, business and the cost of living, and their life goals. These meaningful conversational exchanges help you develop both competence and confidence in speaking and understanding Spanish.

    Análisis

Linked to each diálogo, the análisis provides a linguistic breakdown of the new material in each of the sentences of the diálogo and is accessible via links (Grammar notes) for your reference as you practice the diálogos.

    Variantes

This section expands the grammatical structures presented in the diálogos and presents new structures based on the material presented in the diálogos. The structures and new vocabulary related to the theme of each diálogo are presented in patterned sentences in a meaningful context. Like the diálogos, this material is also available to learners in both written and recorded form.

    Grammar file (grammar notes)

The Grammar file contains the explanations of all the grammar topics presented in the course. All the grammatical information is accessible through links strategically placed in the análisis and variantes so that learners can reference linguistic explanations as they need them.

    Práctica

A hallmark of this program is the vast amount of systematic oral practice provided for learners so that they can master the structures of Spanish and use them with confidence.

    Vocabulary

Learners have instant access to an electronic Spanish-English word list containing all the words introduced in the course. Each word has a reference number to the chapter in which it first appears.

    Listening for key contrasts

These drills target some of the most important sound contrasts in the Spanish verb system. They will help you distinguish verb endings that may sound similar to English-speakers but are very different in meaning. Mastery of these sound distinctions will facilitate your comprehension of Spanish and your ability to make yourself understood in the language.

    Workbook

This volume gives learners additional written practice in the grammatical structures and vocabulary of each chapter. It includes an answer key to facilitate self-study and verb charts for reference. It also contains the complete text of the Grammar Notes so that you can study when away from your computer.

You will be delighted to see how much you understand and can say in Spanish after you have worked through the Practice Makes Perfect: Beginning Spanish program. For more practice, reinforcement, and progress we recommend that you use our acclaimed The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication, now in its second edition.
