Описание

The reasons for a person choosing to live in a country other than where were born are numerous.

Thankfully, for most "Ex-Pats", the decision to up sticks and move to Spain was voluntary.

From a personal point of view, when we told people we were moving to live permanently in Spain, a look of horror quickly turned to an embarrassed recovery as they spluttered, "Why?"

"Oh!" We replied, "You mean, apart from, the weather, the food, the vino, the people, the cost of living etc?"

I hope you enjoy reading these varied reasons for moving to Spain.

ABOUT IAIN AIRE

Iain Aire, born 1952 in London, emigrated to New Zealand before retiring to Spain. During his early years Iain's imagination was fired by his Scottish ancestry and on his English side by his Normandy roots. A career in forestry and environmental management, and exposure to cultural myths from around the world have influenced Iain's writing.

'The Grey Pilgrim' is his first novel is a detective thriller set in Norfolk - in final edit stage - and his anthology of short stories, 'Seeds' reflect his interest in exploring the boundaries between the contemporary and natural world and the exciting imaginative opportunities for characters and plot to cross over between the two.

During his time in New Zealand he became intrigued by the traditional craft of handmade book binding. This led to him training in the original techniques of making tanned leather for bindings, parchment and paper making, marbling, and metal work for corners and clasps. The purpose of his obsession was to put his writing into a unique collection of medieval, leather, cord bound style bindings.

Then in his spare time...........

BELONGING

IAIN AIRE

The burgundy-coloured passport slid out from under the glass partition accompanied by a curt nod of dismissal by the border control officer. The flood of new arrivals at Alicante airport reminded me of a disturbed ant’s nest, chaotic yet purposeful. The smells were unfamiliar but something momentarily elusive was oddly comforting. Then it dawned on me. It was the humidity and evening light. I commented on it to Catherine, my wife. There were a few moments silence before she answered.

We are not far from Madrid and that is about the same latitude as Auckland... opposite hemispheres of course... but that could explain it? The light and temperature would be similar at same time of year.

We were starting the process of emigrating... again. We discovered that our original decision to leave the UK in 2000 for New Zealand had caused disquiet amongst acquaintances, family, and friends. Some were envious, others irritated by the decision that we wanted to leave Great Britain – a kind of betrayal. But after sixteen years and becoming New Zealand citizens it was our turn to experience a sense of selling-out, leaving our south pacific island, where we felt we belonged.
