Your Will Be Done

The author of the Gospel of Mark was also called John Mark. John was his Hebrew name, and Mark was his Greek and Roman name. Mark followed Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey but returned to Jerusalem alone. This caused a fight between Paul and Barnabas (Acts 13:5, 13; 15:36-39). Nevertheless, Mark became an important preacher of the Gospel. Paul said he gave him comfort, and Peter called him son (Colossians 4:10-11; 1 Peter 5:13).

The Gospel of Matthew emphasizes Jesus who is king, but the Gospel of Mark focuses on Jesus as a servant. Matthew wrote his book for the Jews, but Mark wrote for the Gentiles. That is why the Book of Mark depicts the story of Jesus like a movie. The structure of the Gospel of Mark is the birth of the servant (1:1-13), the ministry of the servant (1:14-13:37), the obedience of the servant (Chapters 14-15), and the resurrection and glory of the servant (Chapter 16).

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ (Mark 14:32)

Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray with His disciples for the salvation of humanity. Gethsemane means oil press. Jesus pressed blood and sweat out of himself for us. Like Jesus, we also need to shed blood and sweat for the salvation of our families.

Jesus knew the disciples would not be able to pray, so he told them to wait at the entrance. He took Peter, James, and John with Him (Mark 14:33a). Peter had a temper, and James and John were sons of thunder. They had the worst personality issues among the disciples. Yet, they became Jesus’s closest followers because they knew they could not live on their own. On the other hand, Judas was so smart and educated that he was not desperate enough to hold on to Jesus. The weaker we are, the closer we can follow Jesus.

As Jesus did, we pray alongside other people, but we also pray alone. Jesus took His disciples with Him on His journey to bear the cross, but no one prayed for Him. Likewise, life is lonely.

Jesus was deeply distressed and troubled (Mark 14:33-44). He felt isolated. The High Priests and Sadducees were out to kill Him, and one disciple was planning to hand Him over. No one was on His side. We should remember this in our journey of faith. During the days of Jesus’s life on earth, He offered prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission (Hebrews 5:7). Jesus came to this earth in the form of man and went through the same loneliness we experience. Therefore, we can honestly pray about what is in our hearts.

‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’ (Mark 14:36)

Jesus lowered Himself completely. He prayed, Yet not what I will, but what You will. He was not afraid of suffering because He knew He would be entering the Kingdom of God. He was going to a good place. However, even when we are not afraid of dying of cancer, we want to live longer because we are worried about leaving behind our spouse and kids who do not believe in God yet. But we have to let go of those worries too, and say, Your Will be done.

Then what is God’s Will? It is to sacrifice Himself for all humanity. It is for me to die for my family. God answers our prayers when our will aligns with His.

Although the disciples say they love Jesus, not one of them prays for Him. They fall asleep. The people next to us may fall asleep and seek pleasure with alcohol and women. We need to die for the people in our family who have fallen into addiction. Jesus suffered for the salvation of humanity, and it is the role of Christ-followers to suffer for others. We need to drink the cup for the bankrupt, cancer patients, adulterers, and troublemakers in our lives (Mark 14:36).

Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. (Mark 14:39)

Jesus prayed the same prayer: Yet not what I will, but what You will. Sometimes it is hard to stay awake, but we need to continue going to church, attending service, doing our daily QT, and praying.

Do you have a cross that is too heavy to bear on your own? When we pray with the Word as Jesus did, God will do His Will in our lives. I hope all our readers of QTin love God and live a life where not our will, but God’s Will is done.

Hyanghee Jang, Musical Actress and Singer

Trot music (a genre of Korean popular music) has given hope to the Korean people who were tired of the COVID 19 pandemic. On December 31st, 2020, one of the contestants of Miss Trot 2, a popular television audition program, sang a gospel song. The lyrics said,

image-9-23834.png "Pretending to be humble, pretending to be holy,

pretending to be faithful.

I am a Christian fooling everyone, including myself~~♫"

Who would have expected gospel music to be aired on a television show? Although she didn’t make it to the next round, she says, Everything was a part of God’s perfect plan. We met Hyanghee Jang, the singer of this song titled Chuk Chuk Chuk.

Q. Could you introduce yourself to our readers?

I am Hyanghee Jang, a musical actress and singer. I was born in a non-Christian family but didn’t have a happy childhood. When I was six years old, I remember my father walking into our house wearing a black suit with his shoes on and beating my mother. Because we lived in a one-room studio, my brother and I didn’t have anywhere to go, so we hid under the sheets. A few months later, our parents divorced, and my brother and I lived with relatives. When I became a teenager, I started to rebel, running away from home and dropping out of school. Yet, I realized I needed a high school diploma, so I was studying for my GED (General Equivalency Diploma). That was when my father, a sailor, called me after coming back to Korea. My father was good to me when I was a little girl, but I hated that he couldn’t provide for our family and was violent. So, I hung up on him. The next day, I heard he was missing. Three days later, he was found dead on a seashore. My brother, who was doing his military service at the time, and I prepared his funeral. I followed my friend to church when I was young, but I stopped going to church as I got older. When I was in my 30s, I went to church again and repented of all the evil and adulterous sins I committed in tears. I think I cried because I realized that God waited a long time for me to return to Him. Ever since, I have been involved in a spiritual community doing daily QT.

Q. How did you become a musical actress and singer?

I have liked to sing and dance ever since I was a little girl. After my parents’ divorce, I spent a lot of time at home alone, so I sang and danced with the singers on TV. I decided to become a singer when I was preparing for my GED. I went to many auditions and became a musical actor after graduating from college. I was in many musicals like The Last Empress, West Side Story, and Grease, but I wasn’t a well-known actress, so I struggled. Someone suggested that I become a Trot singer because it fits my name and image. However, it wasn’t easy to debut as a singer even after four years of preparation. It only resulted in more financial debt. A songwriter gave me the idea of releasing a gospel album in the Trot genre. That was when I was praying to God to show me my mission. With the help of several people that God sent to me, I released my first single Chuk Chuk Chuk in 2016 and my first album in 2017.

Q. We saw you singing Chuk Chuk Chuk on Miss Trot 2. How did you end up singing a gospel song on an audition program?

_GY_8104(완).jpg

After Miss Trot 1 aired on television, many people asked me why I didn’t sign up for the audition, especially those at my church (laughs). As I was out of work for some time after the musical I was in was canceled because of COVID 19, I signed up for the audition. I was going to sing traditional Trot, but the show’s producers were more interested in my gospel album. As I went through several auditions to be on the show, I didn’t know I would be singing a gospel song on television until I got into the top 100. The producers selected Chuk Chuk Chuk as my first television audition song. I believe this was God’s doing. On the day of the show, I had severe stage fright. I couldn’t calm down even after the song started, so I thought everything was ruined. But the moment the first verses came out of my mouth, I felt a sense of peace and warmth. I calmed down and felt strong but didn’t get to the next round (laughs).

After the show, I cried for many days asking God, Did you make me sing ‘Chuk Chuk Chuk’ to make me fail? I called a Trot songwriter at our church and said to him, I should have sung a traditional song instead of the gospel! He told me, Are you sure you would have gotten to the next round even if you had sung a traditional song? I believe you have completed the role God has given to you at the moment. I recommend you rather pray that your song doesn’t get edited so that the entire song is aired on television. I stopped crying because he was right. The entire song was aired on television. It was a song that came out years ago. I came to believe that God had planned for a gospel song to be aired on a popular television show. Even though I failed, I could say, Thank you, God.

Q. When did you first start to read QTin?

I read QTin after coming to the church community I am in now in 2012. At first, I did QT when I had an important day ahead of me, thinking it would bring me luck. Actually, the lyrics of Chuk Chuk Chuk are meant to show repentance of following the prosperity gospel. But as I continued with my QT, I learned what it was like to understand my life through the Word and be led by God daily. I don’t know how I could have gone through the difficult times if not for QT.

Q. Is there a specific Bible verse that helped you through difficult times?

Because I lived with my relatives after my parents’ divorce, I didn’t have anyone to wake me up in the morning and tell me to go to school or greet me when I came home. My teen years were difficult, spending most of my time with my friends, and I ran away from home and eventually gave up on school. I regretted this after becoming an adult, but I feel sympathy whenever I see teenagers who have nowhere to go.

_GY_8003(완).jpg

One day, I watched a documentary about teenagers on the streets at night. I burst out in tears. I prayed to God, Show me why I am crying and guide me find a way to help teenagers like those in the documentary. On Sunday, the next day, our church pastor said, True victory is giving your life’s testimony" during a sermon on 1 Samuel (1 Samuel 17:31-54). David, a shepherd boy, encouraged King Saul when he was worried about fighting Goliath. David told Saul about the times God protected him from wild animals. David refused the armor Saul gave him and went to battle with a couple of stones. When I heard this sermon, it was like God was telling me to share my testimony with teenagers going through hard times. The sermon was an answer to my prayers, and I prayed to God to give me a chance to perform for teenagers one day.

Q. Are there any sins and weaknesses you realized while meditating on the Word with QTin?

My grandmother used to take me to Buddhist temples when I was a little girl. She tore up my Bible when I said I wanted to go to church. But I always had Christian friends around me, and my brother and I received a lot of support from them. I remember promising myself to become rich and successful to pay back all they have given to me. This turned into a form of ambition for wealth and success.

I wanted to become famous in this world. But neither my musical career nr singing brought me success. Once I decided to give up and prepared to study abroad because my brother lived in the States. But ten days before my visa interview, I read the verse the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few (Matthew 9:37) during my daily QT. It was a verse I already knew, but it seemed like a loud sound of a trumpet that day.

Although I was a problem kid in my teens, I had a sense of pride deep inside that I grew up well on my own, becoming my own idol. I was my own God. This verse made me realize that I am only God’s worker. Less than a year after I prayed to God, I would dedicate my life to helping teenagers on the streets. I realized I was trying to run away from my calling. I repented saying, God sent me to work for those who are in need. All I need to do is obey what God says, but I tried to ignore His will and run away. I decided not to go
