1 The Problem With Generators - Neil

Despite the short-lived reality of the sudden blackout, Neil couldn't find the energy to be anything other than flat-out terrified and then relieved in short order.

Maybe a little horrified at first, but the terror—the all-encompassing fright of being in a Medbay—one of his least favorite places—and then the complete loss of his senses for a handful of seconds, had that sudden jolt of panic pushing at the thin, crumbling walls of his self-restraint.

The shocked gasps and clinking sounds of everyone's reaction to the loss of sight and the expected startling, causing them to bump into things they'd seen only seconds before, was something of a comfort.

    They were all reacting normally.

No one would notice his delayed reaction or the way that said fright had brought up old haunts from his childhood, teasing at the corners of his mind with the nightmares that had plagued him on and off for so long.

There was too much hurt there.

Neil solemnly shoved it away, boxing it up in the back of his mind and shoving it into another dark, forgotten corner to look at—never. He didn't want to remember, thank you very much.

There was no point to it.

Instead, he focused on the things he could feel to keep from slipping back into those shadowy memories that were always too eager to welcome him back.

The slightly smooth, but squishy texture of the cushioned examination bed. Familiar scents of antiseptic and scent neutralizer filling the room from the overhead air filtration system. The crinkle of the hygienic single-use paper collar meant to give the sensors on the scanner a designated area to work with.

Standby lights of yellow, green and blue, blinked on and off from their respective places throughout the examination room. Their miniature bursts of light broke through the heaviness of the pitch-black room.

It was only because Renee was so close to him, that he was able to find some comfort in the steady, grounding pulse of her magic that seemed to echo right through him. Her presence was soothing to his ruffled instincts.

Briefly, her eyes glowed. She was much nicer to look at than the tiny colors of light winking on and off. Her rich, golden hue was impossible to miss in the darkness before the emergency lights kicked in.

A pale greenish glow overtook the examination room, a different sort of contrast from the calming blues from before. Lights ran along a hollowed channel near the ceiling, shining down with a soft, diffused look.

Everything was still white, empty and too-clean, but it was now also bathed in the weird pale green.

Healer Landon swore colorfully. His eyes were sharp and hard, his body taut. "What kind of a power
