About this ebook

Many of us set the intention to improve our health, but find the work of staying healthy too challenging to stick with. We know the benefits of improving our diet and being more active, but there’s still something standing in the way. What is to be done?

For veteran health coach Chris Deavin, the answer lies in mindset — and in Where the Mind Goes, the Body Follows, an audio course from Scribd Coach, he explains precisely how we can leverage our mindset to implement the habits and behaviors you’ll need to achieve your health goals. In the course, Deavin explains the importance of mindset, what’s holding you back from achieving your health and nutrition goals, when to begin your mindset shift, and how to make lasting changes. He also shares exercises along the way so you can begin putting what you’ve learned into practice right away.

Whatever your health goals — from weight loss to better overall wellness — Chris Deavin’s mindset strategies will help you get started on the right foot.

    Introduction

Hello everyone! This is Chris Deavin, and this is Where the Mind Goes, the Body Follows: The Power of Mindset on Health, a course from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me. I’m excited to go over how to create a healthy mindset with you.

Throughout this course, I want you to remember one important piece of advice: What you focus on is what you get. If you believe life is good and things are going well, your mind will pick up on information that supports that and vice versa. If you only focus on the negative, then your mind will only see the negative too.

Some people call it the power of positive thinking. They have seen amazing results once they shifted their mindset to think more positively. Others are more skeptical. They see it as a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, but once you take a look at the science behind the concept, it starts to make a lot of sense.

Each of us has an estimated 2 million pieces of information coming into our minds every second. I want you to take a minute to pause and just listen to your surroundings. Pause the course. Spend a minute, thirty seconds, whatever you can to just stop and listen. What do you hear? Do you hear all the sounds around you?

They’ve always been there. Your brain was just filtering them out from your consciousness, which helped you focus on what was important at the time. You’ve become accustomed to tuning out the noise. Until I directed you to focus on them, you weren’t consciously aware of the sounds.

This phenomenon is caused by the Reticular Activating System, which is in your hypothalamus. That part of your brain acts as a filter so you can focus your attention on one thing. It identifies the information that relates to what you’re focusing on and helps you get rid of the rest.

So you may be wondering why this matters for this course? If you see yourself as unhealthy, then you will find information that supports that. If you believe you can’t be fit and you come across temptation, you’ll give in.
