CRYPTOGRAPHY AND NETWORK SECURITY (A SYNOPSIS)

Cryptography is a practice of hiding information. It intersects the fields of cutting edge mathematics, computer science and mathematics. Cryptology involves conversion of information into nonsense and reconversion of nonsense into information. A number of terms such as cipher, ciphertext, plaintext, codes etc are quite frequent in modern-day cryptology. History of cryptology ranges from medieval times i.e. era of Greeks and Romans, pre modern times i.e. during WWI and WWII to modern times i.e. era of internet. Since invention of computer, robust developments have been made in field of cryptology as well as cryptanalysis. Cryptanalysis is the technique of finding some weakness in a cryptographic scheme thus permitting its subversion or evasion. A number of academic researches in the field has led to development of several standard encryption algorithms, most important being Data Encryption Standard (DES). In our presentation, we will be discussing about modern day cryptography as well which has been divided into a number of fields such as Public-key cryptography, Symmetric key cryptography, Cryptanalysis, Cryptographic primitives and Cryptosystems. Cryptography plays a major role in fields of network security, for example, Message Digest 5(MD5) algorithm is widely used in hashing of files, which is aimed at checking integrity of files.
