Here we show that a variety of hopanoids (i.e. bacteriohopanetetrol, diplopterol, diploptene and a C27 hopanoid ketone) occur in planctomycetes, including strictly anaerobic bacteria capable of anaerobic ammonium oxidation. Since planctomycetes have a widespread occurrence in Nature, this indicates that they may be an additional source for sedimentary hopanoids. ISSN 0146-6380
