Writing Practical Reports

TITLE DATE (of experiment) NAME PARTNER'S NAME AIM A clear statement of the purpose of the activity. Specific. Include the hypothesis where there is one.

MATERIALS & METHOD List the materials that you will use. Describe the steps that you will take. Include a diagram if necessary

RESULTS Observations recorded from the experiment Organise results into tables, diagrams and graphs, where appropriate. Graphs- determine which kind of graph, if any, is appropriate. Draw and label (independent - horizontal; dependent - vertical). Diagrams must be/have o well-labeled o hand-drawn o in pencil o straight lines ruled

DISCUSSION What do the results show? Is there a relationship between the variables? Describe any trends. Do any of the results appear to be inconsistent? Can you think of a reason why? Were there any sources of error during the experiment? What effect could they have had? How could the experiment design be improved to reduce error and/or get better results? Can you think of a real-life use or example of these results?

CONCLUSION Was your hypothesis supported or refuted? (note: you cannot prove something correct with one experiment!) Overall, what did your results show (generalise)?

PRESENTATION - write in the past tense - all pages must be stapled and typed (or neatly hand written) - Pracs are due on the date stipulated and handed in at the start of the period that day. Late pracs will incur an accountability point and loss of marks. If absent on the due day, hand pracs to the office the next morning. If unable to submit by the due date due to unforseen circumstances, submit the next day with a note from home.
