Introduction to Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

Introduction to Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

The optional Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN feature increases the rate of successful Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context activations in SGSN. This feature enables you to use a default SGSN APN when activating a PDP context if the requested APN is not found and the subscriber has an APN as a 'wild card' (*) defined in the HLR subscription record. In case the subscriber does not have an APN as a 'wild card' (*) defined in the HLR subscription record, the PDP context is activated with an APN according to the first HLR subscription record. This feature can also be used for roaming subscribers. The feature consists of three different functionalities:
.

the override of the requested APN the enforced subscribed APN the override of roaming APN

The enforced subscribed APN and the override of roaming APN functionalities can be used when the override of the requested APN functionality is active. This feature is controlled by PRFILE parameters.

Benefits of Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

Benefits of Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

In order for the user to transfer data, a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context must be activated in the MS, SGSN, and GGSN. With the use of the optional Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN you can increase the rate of successful Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context activations in SGSN. This feature allows you to use a default SGSN APN when activating a PDP context if the requested APN is not found or incorrect and the subscriber has an APN as a 'wild card' (*) defined in the HLR subscription record. 'Wild card' (*) contains the necessary information on the PDP context activation process. In case the subscriber does not have an APN as a 'wild card' (*) defined in the HLR subscription record, the PDP context is activated with an APN according to the first HLR subscription record. You can also use this feature for roaming subscribers. If this feature is not activated, the PDP context activation is rejected.

Description of Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

Requirements for using the feature
Software
This feature requires SG3.1 (CD4) software (or higher version). This feature is optional. A license must be purchased separately before taking it into use.

3.1.2

Hardware
This feature has no special requirements for hardware.

3.2
3.2.1

Functionality
General
In order to transfer data, a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context must be activated in MS, SGSN, and GGSN. Once the radio resources are allocated, the Mobile Station (MS) sends the activate PDP context request to SGSN. This signalling message includes key information about the user's static IP address (if applicable), the QoS requested for this context, the APN of the external network to which connectivity is requested, the user's identity, and any necessary IP configuration parameters.

Feature SG01074: Nokia SGSN Override of Requested APN in SGSN

After receiving the Activate PDP context message, SGSN checks the user's subscription record to establish whether the request is valid. If the request is valid, SGSN sends a query containing the requested APN to the DNS server. The DNS server uses the APN to determine the IP address of at least one GGSN that will provide the required connectivity to the external network. If the subscriber sends an incorrect APN when activating the PDP context, a default SGSN APN is selected. The subscriber must have an APN defined as 'wild card' (*) in the HLR subscription record. It contains the necessary information on the PDP context activation process (for example, context id, PDP address type, and subscribed QoS profile). In this case, the incorrect APN is rejected by the Domain Name Server (DNS) enquiry and the PDP context is activated with a default SGSN APN. If the roaming subscriber has an allowed visiting address, the incorrect APN is in the visiting (SGSN's) PLMN. When the incorrect APN is rejected by the DNS enquiry, the incorrect APN requested after that is in subscriber's home PLMN. When it is rejected again, the PDP context is activated with a default SGSN APN. If this feature is not activated, the PDP context activation is rejected. In case the subscriber does not have an APN as a 'wild card' (*) defined in the HLR subscription record, the PDP context is activated with an APN according to the first HLR subscription record.

Operator interfaces
MMLs
GPRS Network Handling, EJ Command Group You can use the commands of the EJ command group to modify and output parameters of the SGSN object, to create and delete location areas (LA), output network configuration parameters, and to create, modify, delete, and output MSC/VLR to LA association parameters. You can also modify controlled roaming subscriber groups and LA access list associations or output controlled roaming configuration parameters. The following command is relevant to this feature:
.

EJF - MODIFY SGSN PARAMETERS You can use this command to define the default SGSN APN parameters:

GNI GNI6 GOI

GGSN IPv4 network identifier GGSN IPv6 network identifier GGSN operator identifier

PLMN Parameter Handling, MX Command Group You can use the commands of the MX command group to add, modify, output, and delete Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) - level parameter sets in SGSN. With these parameter sets you can define the frequency of subscriber authentication, how often the International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) is checked and the use of the Packet Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (PTMSI) signature. With these parameters you can define whether to check the IMEI from the Equipment Identity Register (EIR) or not. You can store the default APN operator identifier to the PLMN file with the default APN operator identifier (DEFAPN) parameter. You can add and remove the equivalent PLMN (EPLMN) values. You can add a parameter set of their own both for home PLMN subscribers and for each visiting PLMN roaming subscriber. The same parameter set can also be used for several PLMNs. The following command is relevant to this feature:
.

MXN - MODIFY PLMN PARAMETERS You can use this command to modify PLMN parameters (if the DEFAPN is defined, it is used as default GOI in subscribed APN enforcing cases):

DEFAPN

Default APN operator identifier

Parameter Handling, WO Command Group You can use the commands of the WO command group to modify and output the parameter values in the General Parameter File (PRFILE) and to activate or deactivate, and output optional feature parameters in the Feature Information Control File (FIFILE). The following command is relevant to this feature:
.

WOC - CHANGE PARAMETER VALUE You can use this command to change the values of permissible parameters. All parameters are permissible unless their modification is prevented. Changing is also denied if the parameter has an interdependence to another parameter and this parameter's value is FALSE. You can output the permissible parameters by using WOI command. Only a parameter that has been configured into PRFILE during the software building phase and has the value YES in the change possibility field can be changed.
