Conduction

Occurs when

electrons are transferred from one material to another by direct contact. Ex:// rubbing a balloon against your head (transferring electrons) and putting it on the wall

Induction
Occurs when

charges on an object are rearranged without physical contact.

Properties of Magnets
One end of the magnet will attract the other

end One end of the magnet will repel the other end.

Magnetic Poles
All magnets have a

north and south pole.

The ends of a magnet are where the magnetic effect is the strongest. These are called poles. Each magnet has 2 poles 1 north, 1 south.

Magnetic Field
A magnetic region that

surrounds all magnets. Magnetic Field

Compass
Instrument that line

up with the magnetic field surrounding the earth.

We use the Earths magnetic field to find direction.

The needle of a compass always points toward the magnetic south pole. We call this direction North (remember, opposites attract)

Why does the compass point North?

Earth is a magnet! It exerts magnetic

forces and is surrounded by a magnetic field that is strongest near the North and South magnetic poles

How can we make an object magnetic?

Rub it against a

magnet in one direction

What happens if you cut a magnet in half?

You get two

magnets!
