attitudes’ towards technology
Nuz Quadri and Diana Kornbrot
n.1.quadri@herts.ac.uk, d.e.kornbrot@herts.ac.uk
Background:
• Technology can be implemented in institutions to enhance students’ learning,
however some students may not learn as effectively with the use of technology
• The Blended Learning Unit has used its MLE, StudyNet (see Figure 1),
to support students’ learning, and the amount of learning with StudyNet
varies across disciplines.
Aim of study:
To investigate the hypothesis that students who tend to adopt deep approaches
to learning have more confidence in using technology when learning. Figure. 1. StudyNet homepage
Method: Year 2 students from Maths, Accounting, Law, Marketing, and Education completed the Revised Study
Process Questionnaire (RSPQ) and the Attitude toward Technology Scale (ATS). The RSPQ measured students
scores on deep and surface approaches to learning; the ATS measured students’ attitudes in how much trust they had
in computers and the Internet when learning (performance measure), and how confident they felt with using
computers and the Internet (confidence measure).

Conclusion:
• Overall students had positive attitudes towards technology which did not differ significantly across disciplines
• Approaches to learning was not significant in this study, but when technology is implemented in students’ learning, it
could alter their approach
• When implementing technology in learning, students must be aware of how it will enhance their learning
