Country Abuser Details

Isottón molested girls who were preparing to receive their


First Holy Communion at Nuestra Senora de Fatima church.
Argentina Virginio Isottón 2 After this case was reported, he was transferred to the
Diocese of Gregory de Laferrere. He became the parish
priest at Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza church.

Several males accused Pared of raping them while he served


as the head of a home for adolescents. Following the

Argentina allegations, Pared stepped down. He later was suspended by
Pared
the Bishop of Quilmes and was arrested on January 11, 2001.

Archbishop Storni resigned in September 2002 because of


accusations of sex abuse. Storni had been investigated in the
1990s after several allegations of sexual abuse. The

Edgardo Storni 3 controversy erupted again in August 2002 after a book
accused him of sexually assaulting seminarians in his
diocese. Archbishop Storni maintains he is innocent.

Ridsale was sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading


guilty to 46 charges of sexual abuse involving 21 children.
Australia Gerald Ridsdale 4 One of Ridsdale's victims claims he informed Archbishop
Pell of the abuse in 1993, and Pell offered him money to
remain silent.

Elmer, a Christian Brother, was charged in September 1997


Australia Rex Elmer 5 with assaulting 14 boys whose ages ranged from seven to 11
years old at a Catholic boys' home between 1971 and 1977.

McKeirnan was sentenced in October 1998 to a three-year


prison term for molesting nine boys between 1964-5 and

Cardinal Hans The cardinal was accused of sexually abusing boys at a

Belgium Rev. Andre Vanderlyn was convicted of molesting three boys over a
Vanderlyn 8 period of several decades. In April of 1998, a Belgian court
ruled that Cardinal Godfried Danneels and a local bishop
were responsible for the abuse because they were the
supervisors of the priest. The cardinal and bishop were
ordered to pay damages totaling $14,000 to one of the
victims.

Martins is accused of raping a 12-year-old altar boy during


an assignment in Philadelphia, PA, in 1985. He was arrested,
admitted the abuse, and was imprisoned. However, after six

According to police reports, he is charged with financially

Nineteen girls between the ages of 10 and 16 reported some

Berko was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl


in 1985. Criminal charges were brought and Berko pled
guilty the following year. He received a one-year suspended

Canada Rev. Barry In 1974, Glendinning pleaded guilty to six counts of gross

and one girl between 1968 and 1974. He received three years
of probation and spent time in a treatment center. Later he
worked in a rural parish in Alberta and admitted to "sexual
improprieties" with young boys there. He was transferred to
a parish in Toronto in 1983. A supervising clergy member for
that church later claimed to have no knowledge of
Glendinning's criminal past.

Canada Leo Charron 27 Charron molested a boy for more than five years.

Canada Joseph Bonomi 28 Bonomi was accused of having sex with a teenager.
Prior to being ordained, Houston worked as a supervisor at a
residential dormitory between 1960 and1962. In 1962, he
plead guilty to several counts of "buggery and gross sexual
indecency" with five students. Because of the nature of the
abuse, the judge in the case declared Houston a "dangerous
sexual offender" and sentenced him to an indeterminate jail

despite the claim by many that the church was aware of
Houston's criminal background. He was transferred from his
first parish after complaints from parishioners. Since the
media exposed his past in 2002, many have complained that
they were never informed of his prior misdeeds.

O'Connor received a two and one-half year prison sentence


in November of 1996 for sexual assaults committed against
Bishop Hubert five women in the 1960s. O'Connor committed the abuse

Columbia.

In the winter of 1991, a church-appointed commission


criticized Penney for his handling of reports of sex abuse by
priests. Under Penney's leadership, the diocese had received

31 between 1989 and 1991. The commission accused Penney of
failing to take the proper steps to respond to the reports.
Penney resigned from his position.

A former altar boy was awarded $230,000 in damages after


winning the lawsuit against Pornbacher, who abused him 20

lawsuit filed by the girl's parents to a new parish.

Valdenbenito has been criminally charged with raping two


boys, ages nine and ten. Although Bishop Caviedes urged the

In 1991, Jimenez faced a 60-count indictment in New York


for sexual abuse against young boys. Later that year, after
pleading guilty to three counts of sexual abuse in the case,
Rev. Enrique Diaz Jimenez was transferred to Venezuela, on the
Colombia recommendation of Bishop Daily of Brooklyn. Jimenez was

arrested in November 2001 and charged with molesting two
teenage boys in Colombia. At the time of his arrest he had
been living with a teenager for three years.

In January 1999, Stock plead guilty to engaging in "gross


indecency" with an altar boy in the mid- 1970s. He received
Fr. John Gerard a one-year conditional sentence. He had previously pleaded

between 1959 and 1981.

England Frs. Joseph Three Jesuit priests were charged with indecent assault on
Dooley, Clifford former pupils at a leading Catholic school. This brings to

during the 1970s and '80s at Stonyhurst College and its
George Earle 40 elementary school, St. Mary's Hall. One schoolmaster, Rory
O'Brien, was arrested last year and is due to face trial on
charges of indecency involving two former pupils.

He plead guilty in November 2002 to six charges of


molesting boys over an 18-year period. Officials suspect he
may have abused more than 30 children between the 1990s
and 1980s. The Vatican currently is making plans to remove
him from the priesthood. Complaints about Hill's behavior
emerged in the 1970s, but he was transferred to a new parish.
England Michael Hill 41 After receiving treatment for the problem in the mid-1980s,
Bishop Murphy-O'Connor appointed him to be chaplain at
Gatwick airport. While serving in this position, Hill
allegedly abused a boy who had missed his flight. The latest
charges emerged from admissions made by Hill when
questioned by authorities.

Ward, former papal adviser and the highest-ranking Roman


Catholic cleric in Wales, will not be prosecuted in
Archbishop John connection with allegations he committed sexual assault on a
England seven-year-old girl nearly 30 years ago. Ward also allegedly

ignored reports that two priests close to him were serial
abusers. The pope demanded his resignation in 2001. 43

Former press spokesman for Archbishop Ward, Lloyd was


jailed for eight years for 11 indecent assaults, one rape, and a
serious sexual offence. The court heard that he had sexually
abused two teenage altar boys and a woman in her 20s
during a 10-year period and had raped a girl of 16 he
befriended at a church youth club. The four complainants
England Fr. John Lloyd 44 came forward as a result of his conviction last February of
abusing a girl of 13 within hours of baptizing her. He was
acquitted of seven counts of indecently assaulting children
and four counts of rape while a parish priest between 1970
and 1988. The jury was unable to reach verdicts on nine
further counts of indecent assault.

England Fr. Adrian This priest has been sentenced to six years in prison for
McLeish 45 sexually abusing boys while exchanging pornographic
material with a pedophile ring on the Internet. He had built a
library of 11,000 images on computer discs in what was the
biggest haul ever in Britain of pornography involving the
Internet. In addition to pleading guilty to eight charges of
possessing and distributing indecent pictures and two
charges of importing pornographic videos of children,
McLeish also confessed to 12 charges of indecently
assaulting four boys from ages 10 to 18.

Taylor was convicted in 1998 of committing 18 sexual


offences against young boys in a Catholic orphanage. He
was sentenced to seven years in prison and was subsequently

have alleged that church officials were aware that Taylor had
a previous criminal conviction before sending him to work at
the orphanage.

Rev. Rene Bissey was convicted of raping and molesting 11


minors between 1996 and 1998. He was eventually
sentenced to 18 years of prison. So egregious was the official
Rev. Rene Bissey cover-up that when Bishop Pierre Pican was convicted of
France concealing evidence that Rev. Bissey was sexually abusing

children, he was given a three-month suspended sentence
and fined one franc in symbolic damages in a court in Caen,
France.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping and

Eisenbach, a bishop in Mainz, resigned in April 2002 after a

abusing male and female children from the 1960s t through
the 1990s. Reporters allege that senior church officials were
Smyth 53 aware of Smyth's criminal behavior and transferred him from
parish to parish in order to cover up the abuse. 54

Sexton affectionately known as "The Bishop" by


Bishop Joseph parishioners, plead guilty to 17 sex offenses against four

He abused a teenage boy, starting at age 13, and sexually


assaulted him on at least four occasions, after having
recommended the child's parents send their son to the school

duties upon telling his bishop. He was sentenced to four
years in prison.

Fiona Gahan, 21, a victim of sexual abuse by Grennan, is


calling for a report by the Garda (national police) on their
failure to properly investigate the matter now made public:

Ireland allegations were first made against Grennan in 1988

involving 10 schoolgirls aged 11 and 12; Grennan died two
years ago.

Payne is to be prosecuted for a "considerable number" of


allegations of sexual assault following national police
investigation. In 1981, Payne was moved from his parish
after an altar boy made an allegation of sexual abuse and
Ireland Fr. Ivan Payne 58 settled out-of-court in 1993. In 1982, he was examined and
sent to another parish. Payne was removed from ministry
when the payment was disclosed last year. He is being sued
by a young man for sexual assaults that allegedly occurred at
his last parish.

Ireland Desmond Connell, He was named as co-defendant in the Fr. Ivan Payne case.

The media recently revealed that in the early 1980s, Ledwith
was accused of sexually harassing seminarians when he
Msgr. Michael served as the president of St. Patrick's College. In June 2002,

allegations were originally ignored.
This former Franciscan brother plead guilty to eight charges
of indecently assaulting eight boys between ages nine and 16
during the period 1969-1972. He was given a two-year

currently serving an 18-month sentence for two similar
offences.

In April 2002, Tobin, a retired member of the Christian


Ireland Morris Tobin 62 Brothers teaching order, was charged with 173 counts of
molesting 25 schoolboys in the 1960s.

This nun was found guilty of raping a 10-year-old child in


her care in 1988 when Wall pinned the girl by the ankles
while a homeless man raped her in a children's home run by
Sister Dominic Sisters of Mercy of which Wall was in charge. Wall also

(Nora Wall) 63 personally sexually abused the girl. She was acquitted of a
second rape charge. Wall is the first nun to be convicted of
child sex abuse.

In late 1995, Payne left his parish under accusations that he


sexually abused several boys over a span of 15 years. Irish

from another parish after being accused of molesting an altar
boy there.

A member of the Holy Ghost Order confessed and


apologized to 11 charges of indecent assault and one of gross
indecency, which allegedly took place between 1969 and

home. Two boys and three girls, between the ages of nine
and fifteen, were named in the charges.

Halpin pled guilty in January 2001 to 25 counts of sexual

In March 2002, Marchena was publicly accused of sexually

Mexico Rev, Edgar In September 2002, Hidalgo was arrested in Mexico City
and extradited to Italy where he was wanted since November

Maciel was accused of sexual assault by several former


priests. Maciel denied the allegations. The victims filed

July 2002 after being accused of propositioning a 17-year-
old boy. The complaint was first filed in June 2001, six
months after the incident is said to have occurred. The boy's
Salvador Coria family claims they reported the abuse to a priest and a

action. Eventually the family reported the complaint to the
Attorney General's office, and charges were filed against
Coria.

Geronimo Chavez Chavez was convicted of raping a boy in 1987 and was sent

Poland Archbishop He was accused of sexually molesting young seminarians.
Juliusz Paetz of One priest claims he was relieved of his duties after

the Vatican initiated an investigation of the case; he still
denies the allegations.

He denied five charges of indecent assault on two youths.

A former nun charged this priest with raping her over a


three-year period, beginning in 1985. The victim pursued
charges against Goodall in a church court, where he was

active role in the church; he currently works at a parish in
Liverpool, England.

In March 2002, Harricharan resigned in response to


speculation that he was cohabitating with an 18-year-old
Trinidad and Fr. Felix male altar server. The mother of the boy claims that she had
Tobago Harricharan 81 complained to the church about the relationship for the past
several years.

Trupia is accused of abusing several boys beginning in 1976


and continuing through the 1980s. Reports of the abuse first
surfaced in 1976. In 2001, criminal charges were filed
against Trupia, but the case was dismissed because the

lawsuit against the priest and the diocese, which was settled
in 2002 for an undisclosed amount. Trupia remains a priest
but is suspended from clerical duties.

United States Rev. Patrick Colleary first underwent treatment for behavioral problems
(AZ) Colleary 83 in 1997. After being released in 1998, he was assigned to a
parish in Scottsdale. By 1999, the Diocese of Phoenix had
received at least six complaints of improper sexual conduct
by Colleary, spanning the three decades of his ministry
(three of the complaints had occurred between 1998 and
1999). In May 2002, one of his victims came forward to
accuse Colleary of fondling her when she was a teenager in
the mid 1970s and having consensual sex with her when she
was an adult. Colleary also admitted in May w002 to
fathering a child with another parishioner in 1978. On May
30, 2002, civil authorities announced they were opening a
criminal investigation of Fr. Collery and the Diocese of
Phoenix. 84

In 1995, the Diocese of Phoenix paid $45,000 to settle a


United States Msgr. Dale Fushek sexual harassment claim by a male church worker. Fushek
(AZ) 85 claims he was innocent; the diocese said it made the
settlement to avoid litigation.

Emon was removed from public ministry in June 2002, after


information surfaced that he molested older male teens

when they accepted him in 2000.

Joan K. of Sacramento accused Boyle of molesting her in


United States Father Edward 1967 when she was 17. Her mother reported the incident to

In July 2002, O'Keefe was arrested for having sex with a 17-
year-old female during the 1970s. O'Keefe is charged with
15 felony counts of oral copulation. The woman reported the
incident in 1989 to former Bishop Phillip F. Straling but the
current Bishop did not hear of her complaint until April

sexual relationships with three adult women. O'Keefe began
working at St. Anne's school in 1997, but was dismissed in
April 2002 when the diocese notified school officials about

Dolores Sharp Nelson claims that Lyons sexually abused her


United States Monsignor Lyons in 1957 when Nelson was 12. Nelson says that Lyons
(CA) 95 fondled her during her pre-confirmation confession. Lyons
died in 1958.

In 1996, 15 men accused O'Shea and two other priests of


molesting them. The San Francisco Archdiocese paid $2.5
million that year to settle the case. In 2002, nine men

four of his accusers for $1.6 million. In April 2002, he was

year-old girl in 1977. He no longer performs priestly duties
but has not been dismissed from the priesthood.

Lori Capobianco Haigh accused a priest of sexually abusing


her in 1978 and then paying for her abortion. Ms. Haigh
settled her civil suit in April 2002 with the Diocese of
Orange County and Archdiocese of Los Angeles for $1.2
million. A previous sexual abuse case (for abuse occurring in
United States Rev. John P.
(CA) Lenihan 99 the 1970s) was settled with a girl in 1991. Father Lenihan
was removed from public ministry in the fall of 2001, after
admitting to affairs with parishioners. He has asked the pope
to be laicized. He recently disappeared from the treatment
center he was attending, and is currently missing.
In April 2002, Lori Haigh accused Baird of making sexual
advances on her when she went to report Lenihan's
molestation. Following this accusation, police received a

(CA) Baird 100 second phone call from a woman accusing Baird of
misconduct. No further details were released. Baird remains
on the job during the investigation.

In 2002, a mentally ill woman accused Mahony of molesting


her. Mahony denied the complaint. Police dismissed the
charge in April 2002 because the woman had been diagnosed
as paranoid schizophrenic. In June 2002, Loren Mitchell

three years probation for sexual misconduct with a boy. A
second sexual misconduct charge was made against Widera
in 1975. The next year he was transferred from Milwaukee

(CA) Widera 104 involving a boy. He was removed from his Orange County
position and sent for therapy after six allegations of sex
abuse arose in 1985. In April 2002, a 32-year-old man filed a
complaint accusing Widera of fondling him in 1980.

In 1993, Ramos pled guilty to three misdemeanors in


connection with sexual abuse of young boys. He was

(CA) Ramos 105 being told of the abuse. Ramos resigned in April 2002 from
his current parish assignment once news of his past
misconduct arose.

Savino was accused in April 2002 of molesting at least 10


teenagers at schools he taught at in California and Kentucky.
United States Fr. Dominic Savino was forced to leave his position as president of
(CA) Savino 106 Crespi High School after allegations were made in April
2002.

United States Rev. Tom Accusations of child molestation were reported against
Naughton in early April, 2002. Naughton is accused of
molesting a child in Texas in 1978. He was removed from
(CA) Naughton 107 church duties and placed on administrative leave in April
2002.

In the fall of 2001, church officials began investigating a


report that first arose in 1981 that Henson had engaged in
sexual misconduct with a boy. Henson denied the allegation.

parish in Reno, Nevada. He has since been officially
removed from church duty.

A former monsignor and Santa Margarita Catholic High


School principal, Harris was accused in 1994 of molesting a
boy. The church paid a $5.2 million settlement in the case in

1994. He received his doctorate from Pepperdine University
and founded a non-profit organization.

A man claims he notified the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in


1989 and again in 1991 that Sutphin molested him and his
brother when they were children. The man again came
United States Rev. Carl Sutphin forward with the allegations in 2002; Sutphin's name was
(CA) 110 given to the Los Angeles Police Department at that time. In
1994, a woman reported that her sons had been molested by
Sutphin during a 1984 field trip. Cardinal Mahony dismissed
Sutphin in April 2002.

Bismonte was arrested in April 2002 for molesting two girls

molesting him for eight years when he was an altar boy.
Police are also questioned approximately 100 parents and

United States Father Denis In April 2002, Lyons was accused of molesting a teenage

at his diocese also revealed that Lyons had admitted in 1993
to engaging in "inappropriate behavior" with two men, and
that in 1994, parents of two brothers had complained that
Lyons had molested their teenage sons in 1979. After both
accusations, Lyons was sent for "extensive counseling," but
he was not removed from his ministry until this year. Lyons
was placed on paid administrative leave in April 2002, and
the case was forwarded to the police.

A complaint of sexual abuse against Father Covas was

position in April 2002.

A single complaint of sexual abuse against Father Luque was


revealed in April 2002, after the diocese reviewed its files to

indefinite leave during the investigation.

In 1984, a woman (Rita Milla) claimed she was raped and


abused by seven Catholic priests in the early 1980s. The suit
was originally dismissed because of a violation of the statute
of limitations, but in 1991 Tamayo confessed to initiating the
United States Father Santiago abuse. In April of 2002, the victim's lawyer uncovered
(CA) Tamayo 116 papers indicating that church officials knew of the abuse and
took action to protect Tamayo. Tamayo left the church in
1980 and fathered a child with a woman he later married. He
died in 1999.

Cruces is another of the seven priests accused of raping Rita


United States Father Angel Milla in the early 1980s. As of May, 2002, Cruces served at a
(CA) Cruces 117 parish in New York City.

Tugade is another of the seven priests accused of raping Rita


Milla in the early 1980s. Tugade admits to having sex with
United States Father Valentin Milla, but claims it was consensual. He left the priesthood
(CA) Tugade 118 several years ago and is currently living with his girlfriend in
California.

United States Father Henry Perez was accused of sexual abuse when he was a priest
(CA) Perez 120 serving in Arizona. He was removed in 1991 when officials
in his new California diocese became aware of the prior
allegations. Perez now works as a priest in the Anglican
Catholic Church, where he celebrates Mass weekly.

Coughlin was removed from his diocese in 1993, after


allegations of abuse were reported. He continues to say Mass

In May 2002, Kiesle was charged with seven counts of child


molestation for incidents occurring while he was a priest
thirty years ago. Two other women recently reported that

pled no contest in 1978 to molesting two boys. He received
United States Stephen Kiesle three years of probation and left the priesthood in 1981. In

in the disappearance of three girls between 1988 and 1991.

In April 2002, Bishop Patrick McGrath (of the Diocese of


San Jose) acknowledged that he knew of six priests facing
sexual abuse allegations. The only named priest, Rev.
Pritchard, is accused of abusing boys in his parish during the
Rev. Joseph T. 1970s. In only two of the incidents were the accused still
United States Pritchard and five working in the diocese, all others accused priests were either
(CA) other San Jose retired or deceased.For the two active priests, each received
priests 125 psychological treatment and was reassigned to jobs
involving no contact with minors. Both were criminally
charged; one served jail time and the other received

first reported to Jesuit officials in 1995. In 1997, a friend of
the victims reported the abuse to police, but the investigation
was not completed because the victims would not talk to the

when one of the victims came forward. At this time, Burke
admitted to the abuse, and the Jesuits transferred him to
Santa Clara University. Connor plead guilty to one count of
"committing lewd acts on a dependent adult" in 2001. He
was sentenced to six months of home detention.

In November 2002, Walsh was arrested for repeatedly


fondling a child under 14 years old in 1984. Walsh fondled
the child in a swimming pool and in a shower on the victim's
13th birthday. The boy's parents reported the incidents to
United States Rev. Milton T. Archbishop John Quinn the day after the boy's birthday, but
(CA) Walsh 127 the Archbishop dissuaded them from going to the police. n
the spring of 2002, Walsh admitted to the abuse and
apologized to the victim during a police-directed phone call
from the victim to Walsh.

Through a complaint received by Child Protective Service,


Heaney is charged with molesting two brothers 40 years ago.
United States Monsignor John P. Heaney is the chaplain for the San Francisco Police

The parents of a deceased man claim their son was abused
by the two priests between 1974 and 1977. They assert that
the church tried to cover up the allegations when the victim

United States Castellanos and priests and the archdiocese for damages. The archdiocese
(FL) Rev. Alvara denies the report. Rev. Guichard, currently serving as a priest
Guichard 157 in Miami Beach, refuses to comment on the case. Rev.
Castellanos, currently serving in Pompano Beach, denies all
charges.

Three sisters sued the Miami church and archdiocese in July


2002 alleging that Estevez knew about their abuse by a
church carpenter in 1989 at the ages of 8,9, and 10. The
youngest sister said that Estevez watched as the abuser, Juan
Marcello Sastre, led her out of the restroom and did nothing.
Estevez called the girls' parents the same summer and
United States Monsignor Felipe warned to be careful of their lovely daughters because
(FL) Estevez 158 something could happen to them. The lawsuit states that the
girls' parents reported the abuse to Estevez in 1999 and again
in 2000. Estevez responded that the statute of limitations had
expired and that they should not contact the police. Estevez
is now a professor at St. Vincent De Paul Seminary in

raped a Polish immigrant. DNA tests proved that Strus is the

In 1994, Calicott admitted to sexual misconduct with two


15-year-old boys in 1976. Calicott was removed from his

policy.

United States Rev. Lawrence In 1977, parents of a teenage boy complained to church
(IL) Gibbs 178 officials that Gibbs engaged in inappropriate behavior with
their son and his friends. He was allowed to remain in the
ministry, and in 1980 was accused on engaging of sexual
misconduct with several boys. At that time, Bishop Joseph
Imesch moved Gibbs to a new church, where he allegedly
abused several boys. One boy, claiming Gibbs had molested
him for seven years, sued the diocese in 1993. The church
settled the suit in 1998. Gibbs left the priesthood in the
1990s.

national child pornography ring in the mid 1990s. Police
found a large trunk full of "hardcore" child pornography in
his possession. Vogler was convicted in 1996; he served one

(IN) 183 offender. According to ABC News, after serving his prison
sentence, Vogler was moved to a new parish in the same
town where the arrest occurred (Evansville, IN). He
continues to serve there.

Eder's niece, Therese Byerly, claims that Eder fondled her


breasts six times between the ages of 11 and 13. Byerly says
United States Rev. Donald Eder that she reported the abuse twice to Bishop Wlliam Higi. The
(IN) 184 diocese responded by saying the claims had been
investigated both times and were found to be without merit.

Graehler was placed on leave in June 2002 after someone


from a parish where he had previously served made
allegations of sexual misconduct. In September 2002, the

(IN) Graehler 185 panel found that Graehler had engaged in inappropriate but
not illegal conduct and recommended he return to active
ministry.

United States Ponciano Ramos Ramos was charged with molesting three boys.

was a child and the second when she was 18. Schoering
denies the allegations. He was suspended during the
investigations.188 The board appointed to review the
allegations cleared Schoering and recommended he return to
active ministry. 189

June Kochert filed a lawsuit against the Archdiocese of
Indianapolis claiming that church officials ignored her
reports that Schoettelkotte sexually abused her as a teenager
in the 1960s while he was a priest at St. Mary's Church of
New Albany. Kochert's lawsuit says that she complained to
United States Rev. John B. church officials three times about Schoettelkotte, the first
(IN) Schoettelkotte 191 time in 1969, but no action was taken against him until 2002.
Kochert says the sexual abuse began when she was 15 and
lasted for three years. Archdiocesan officials placed
Schoettelkotte on administrative leave in June, saying they
substantiated a claim that he had inappropriately touched a
teenage girl more than 30 years ago.

Three men and two women filed a lawsuit in October 2002


against the Archdiocese of Indianapolis claiming that Deery
abused them at St. Augustine parish of Jeffersonville in the
United States Rev. Albert Deery 1950s and 1960s while they were students at the parish
(IN) 192 school. Deery was also accused of sexual abuse in a suit
filed in September, 2002 by a southern Indiana woman who
said he abused her during the same time. Deery died in 1972
and the archdiocese has no comment.

from St. Aloysius Catholic Church to St. Elizabeth of
Hungary Catholic Church, where he was also accused of
abusing minors. Since mid-April 2002, 59 people have filed
lawsuits accusing Miller of sexually abusing them as minors.
In June 2002, Miller was indicted on six counts of sexual
United States Rev. Louis E.
(KY) Miller 201 abuse and 36 counts of indecent and immoral practices. In
October 2002, Miller was again indicted on one charge of
indecent and immoral practices for fondling a child under
the age of 15 in the sacristy of his church. Miller has pleaded
innocent to all of the charges. Miller retired in March, 2002,
after the allegations arose. The Archdiocese of Louisville
denied responsibility for the alleged incidents.

A man filed suit against the Archdiocese of Louisville in


May of 2002, claiming it was aware of allegations against
Creagh. The victim says Creagh assaulted him in 1982, when
United States Rev. Thomas P.
(KY) Creagh 202 he was 14 years old. After he reported the abuse to church
authorities in 1983, a settlement was reached. Creagh
underwent treatment and was reassigned.

Two women filed separate lawsuits against Bowling in 2002,


claiming that he sexually molested and abused them. The
abuse is said to have occurred between 1958 and 1962, when
United States Msgr. Robert
(KY) Bowling 203 Bowling served at Holy Cross Church in Loretto. Bowling
moved from Louisville to Reno, Nevada in 1974, and he
continues to serve as priest there.
In 2002, two women claimed they were abused by Cole
United States Rev. Kevin Cole when he was a priest at St. Luke Church between 1968 and
(KY) 204 1970. Cole died in 1990.

One man filed a lawsuit in 2002, accusing Scherzer of


United States Rev. Edwin molesting him when he was twelve years old (between 1956
(KY) Scherzer 205 and 1958). Scherzer retired in 1995.

In October 2002, Hargadon was indicted on a charge of


second-degree sodomy by a Jefferson County grand jury.
The indictment against Hargadon accuses him of engaging in
"deviate sexual intercourse" with a boy under the age of 14.
United States Rev. James Hargadon has been named in four lawsuits against the
(KY) Hargadon 206 archdiocese. The suits filed by four men, claim they were
sexually abused by the priest when they were children in the
1970s. Hargadon was asked to refrain from all public
ministry after being named in a lawsuit in May 2002.

In 1988, Clark plead guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and


second-degree sodomy of two students in 1981 and 1982. He
United States Rev. Daniel C. was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 15 years probation. As
(KY) Clark 207 of October 2002, Clark was facing 18 other counts of sexual
misconduct.

In 1986, Father Gary Hayes returned to his childhood church


to report that Fathers O'Connell and McGarvey had sexually
abused him when he was a teenager. The allegations were
detailed in an internal memo, but no action was taken against
the priests. McGarvey was given a promotion and
Father William C. transferred. O'Connell was later convicted of sexually
United States O'Connell and assaulting three boys; he resigned from the priesthood and
(KY) Father Joseph H. has since passed away. In 1991, Father Hayes again initiated
McGarvey 208 an investigation into the priests. He filed a lawsuit against
the diocese, in which he was jointed by two other men who
had been victimized by the same priests. The lawsuit was
settled out of court, and McGarvey-still denying the abuse-
retired.

United States Rev. Gilbert In 1984, Rev. Gilbert Gauthe admitted he abused 37 boys
(LA) Gauthe 209 (although there is speculation he may have molested as
many as 150). Gauthe accepted a plea bargain in 1985 and
was sentenced to 20 years in prison. After being released
from prison in 1995, he was again imprisoned for two years
on a new accusation that he had raped a 12-year-old girl in
the 1980s. Gauthe was again released in February 2000.

Andries was first accused in 1998 of fondling a boy, but at
that time his parents asked authorities to not to prosecute in
United States Rev. John Andries order to protect their child. Andries was sent to a treatment
(LA) 211 center after this initial complaint, but he later resumed work
in that parish. In 2001 he was again accused of sexual
misconduct with a teenage boy, in the same parish.

He was accused in April 2002 of molesting a youth in


United States Rev. Charles G. Boston during the 1970s. Coyle was suspended in April 2002
(LA) Coyle 212 after the allegations arose.

Rogge was convicted in 1985 for sexually abusing a boy in


Florida. After serving time for that conviction, Rogge was
United States Rev. Norman J.
(LA) Rogge 213 transferred to Louisiana, where he served as a priest for at
least ten years.

Alexander was removed in April 2002 after he admitted to


having a sexual relationship with a teen-age boy 40 years

ordained as a priest.

Doucette admitted in February 2002 to being "intimately
involved" with a 15-year-old boy 20 years ago. Bishop Gerry
United States Rev. Michael ordered Doucette to make a public confession and removed
(ME) Doucette 217 him from his duties in February 2002 after a second victim
accused Doucette of unwanted sexual advances.

Audibert's victim publicly accused him of molestation in


United States Rev. John 1993. Audibert was ordered to make a public confession in
(ME) Audibert 218 February 2002 and was removed from his ministry.

United States Rev. Raymond- Church officials reported problems with Lauzon from the
(ME) Joseph Lauzon time he was in seminary. Still, he was shuffled from parish to
219 parish before becoming director of a church thrift shop in
Maine. There, he is accused of abusing six brothers. He was
indicted on charges of gross misconduct with two of the
victims in 1984. After serving four and one-half months in
jail, Lauzon returned to parish work. In 1990 he joined a
Franciscan monastery and three years later he moved to
Lithuania. Several additional lawsuits filed in the 1990s
accused Lauzon of abusing children in the 1970s and 1980s.

Smith admitted to fondling children. He later committed

Cox was arrested in May 2002 on charges he molested an 11
year-old-boy in 1980. Cox had been suspended from the
United States Rev Brian Cox
(MD) 221 priesthood in 1995 following another accusation of abuse.
He was never charged for that crime.

Blackwell is accused of abusing Dontee Stokes, beginning


when the latter was a boy in the mid 1960s and continuing
for a decade. Stokes claims he reported the abuse to police in
1993, but there was not enough evidence to file charges. At
that time, Blackwell underwent three months of counseling
and was returned to parish work. In 1998, Blackwell
admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the boy from
1971 to1975 (when the victim was 16-20 years old). After
the admission, Blackwell was removed from his priestly

(MD) Blackwell 222 duties. Church officials claim they reported the abuse to the
police, but authorities have no record of the allegations.
Following the shooting, a second man came forward to
report he, too, was sexually abused by Blackwell as a teen.
This second victim reported his case to the church and police
in 1998. 223 Stokes shot Blackwell on May 13, 2002.
Blackwell was treated and released from the hospital.
Stokes, was acquitted of attempted murder and assault in
December 2002. 224

United States Rev. Robert Between the mid-1960s and 1988, church officials sent
(MD) Petrella 225 Petrella to receive psychiatric treatment three times,
following allegations of abuse. Each time he was returned to
his ministry. Petrella was dismissed in 1989 after a new
allegation arose. He was sentenced to three months in jail for
that abuse, but served only seven days. During the recent
media attention on this topic, several other men have come
forward with reports that Petrella molested them as children.
Despite the fact that Petrella has been removed, his
archdiocese has received calls from individuals who claim
they've seen Petrella wearing a priest's collar recently.

Banko is one of six former seminarians accused of sexually


abusing children while studying at St. Mary's Seminary in
Baltimore. Banko was a student at St. Mary's from 1964

John Banko 226 through 1972. He is accused of sexually abusing a minor
(MD)
from 1970-1980. He is also charged with sexually assaulting
an 11-year-old altar boy in New Jersey in 1993 or1994.

Haight is one of six former seminarians accused of sexually


abusing children while studying at St. Mary's Seminary in
Baltimore. Haight studied at St. Mary's from 1972 to75. In
April 2002, A 43-year-old man accused Haight of molesting

Mark Haight 227 him while on a camping trip in 1974 and in Haight's room at
(MD) the seminary. In 2002, the diocese of Albany, where Haight
was later ordained, acknowledged that it had paid a $1
million dollar settlement in a 1997 sex abuse case involving
Haight. Haight was removed from ministry in 1996.

Ball is one of six former seminarians accused of sexually


abusing children while studying at St. Mary's Seminary in
Baltimore. In 1994, two brothers accused Ball of fondling

Bruce E. Ball 228 them numerous times beginning in 1975 while he was

attending St. Mary's.Ball was removed from the priesthood
and served jail time for other child sex offenses.

McGrath is one of six former seminarians accused of


sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. In 2002, a man reported to Baltimore
United States Francis McGrath church officials that McGrath had sexually abused him
(MD) 229 during the 1970s. McGrath left the priesthood in 1974 after
sex abuse claims from "three or four victims" surfaced in
different parishes in New Jersey.

United States Raymond Melville Melville is one of six former seminarians accused of
(MD) 230 sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. In 1990, a boy in Baltimore accused
Melville of abusing him from 1980 to 1985 while he was at
St. Mary's. A man in Maine says Melville assaulted him from
1985-1992.

LaMountain was accused of molesting a 14-year-old boy in


his room at the seminary in 1973. Baltimore prosecutors
United States Michael closed the case because of a lack of evidence. LaMountain
(MD) LaMountain 231 later pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting five teenage boys
in Rhode Island from 1979-1992.

In 1991, a victim accused Spillane of sexual abuse. At that


time, he admitted to molesting six youths between 1969 and
1986. The Archdiocese of Baltimore claims that it revoked
Spillane's right to celebrate Mass and perform the
sacraments. Spillane sought treatment and resigned from
United States Rev. Michael J.
(MD) Spillane 232 parish work. He has been working at the Federation of
Diocesan Liturgical Commissions for the past 16 years, most
recently as executive director. The archdiocese recently
received a new allegation that Spillane abused a child in the
late 1960s.

Reports were made in June 2002 that Loskarn sexually


abused a teenage boy in the early 1970s. Loskarn admitted to
the abuse and was immediately suspended. At the time of the
United States Rev. George B. abuse, Loskarn was the pastor at a Baltimore-area church.
(MD) Loskarn 233 However, the abuse reportedly occurred in New York. The
Baltimore archdiocese plans to notify New York authorities
about the case.

Bishop Gordon Bennett requested the resignation of Rev.


Malia in June of 2002, after learning that Malia hired a
convicted sex offender to serve as interim music director of
United States Rev. Thomas R. his church. The music director had been convicted in 1997 of
(MD) Malia 234 sexual abuse with his 17-year-old student. The Bishop
indicated that Malia will most likely be reassigned as
associate pastor to another parish.

In 2002, Danilak was accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-


old altar boy in the 1978. According to the police, the victim
reported the abuse on multiple occasions. The police and
United States Rev. John Danilak church officials were unconvinced that the abuse had
(MD) 235 occurred. In September 2002, a grand jury indicted Danilak
on two counts of sodomy, one count of child abuse and 11
counts of perverted or unnatural sex acts.
Brown plead guilty to sexually molesting a 12-year-old boy
and his 10-year- old brother in the mid to late 1970s. The
abuse occurred while Brown was seminarian training at a
United States Rev. Wayland Y. Maryland church. Brown was removed from the active
(MD) Brown 236 ministry in 1988, officially for "personality issues." Some
claim that he was removed for engaging in improper
behavior with teenage boys.

In July of 2002, Dean was placed on administrative leave


after allegations surfaced that he had sexually abused a 14-
year-old boy in April 2002. The Archdiocese of Baltimore
United States Rev. Alfred A. claimed that the allegations did not appear to be credible, but
(MD) Dean 237 that the investigation had surfaced concerns about Dean's
ability to work with children. Dean resigned in September
2002.

Rydzewski was charge in June 2002 with receiving and


possessing sexually explicit images of minors. He had been
United States Rev. Thomas A. involved with ministering to youths in his parish, but he was
(MD) Rydzewski 238 suspended in December 2001 when the first search warrant
was issued against him.

United States Peter McCutcheon He was convicted for molesting three youths.

A nun reported in 1990 that Schwind raped her in 1989.
According to records in the Maryland State Attorney
General's office, the church requested that the victim drop
United States Rev. Thomas R. the case and insisted that Schwind would receive counseling.
(MD) Schwind 240 Instead, he was transferred to another parish. He eventually
left the Catholic church and now serves as a Pentecostal
minister. In 2002, at the request of the victim, the state
reopened the case.

Ryan was accused in a 2002 lawsuit of molesting a teenage


boy nearly 25 years ago. He was placed on administrative
leave during the investigation. In early May, 2002, Ryan
United States Msgr. Frederick
(MA) Ryan 241 resigned his position. In October 2002, Chris Nilan testified
that Ryan sexually abused three minors and maintained a
sexual relationship with one of them until three years ago.

United States John J. Geoghan Geoghan was convicted in January of 2002 of molesting a
(MA) 242 ten-year-old boy; he currently faces two more criminal
charges. The church had previously settled about 50 lawsuits
against Geoghan for more than $10 million. In March 2002,
the Archdiocese of Boston agreed to pay up to $30 million to
86 people who accused him of child molestation. Cardinal
Law repeatedly reassigned Geoghan to new parishes after
allegations of abuse surfaced in 1984 and again in 1989. He
removed Geoghan from parish duty in 1998.

Shanley has been accused of molesting or raping at least 26
children over three decades. Throughout the 1990s, the
Archdiocese of Boston transferred Shanley to parishes in
Massachusetts, Nnew York and California, after they had
knowledge of his actions. The Boston archdiocese has settled
at least three abuse suits against Shanley. As of the beginning
United States Rev. Paul R. of 2002, Shanley had retired from the priesthood and was
(MA) Shanley 245 serving as a volunteer with the San Diego Police
Department; he was dismissed from that job in early April
2002 because of the disclosure of sexual abuse allegations.
He was arrested in May 2002 and charged with ten counts of
child rape and six counts of indecent assault and battery, to
which he plead not guilty.

In 2002, Spagnolia was accused of abusing a 14-year-old


United States Rev. D. George boy. The Boston archdiocese placed him on administrative
(MA) Spagnolia 247 leave in February 2002. Spagnolia denies the charge.246

United States Rev. Joseph E. Many people came forward during March and April of 2002,
(MA) Birmingham 248 accusing Birmingham of molesting them over a thirty-year
period. Several individuals claim that they reported the
abuse to church officials, who transferred Birmingham to
other parishes after learning of the abuse. The Archdiocese
of Boston settled an abuse case against Birmingham in 1996,
paying $60,000 to the victim. Birmingham is deceased.
Several plaintiffs are currently suing the Archdiocese,
Cardinal Law and New Hampshire Bishop John
McCromack.

Welsh was accused in February 2002 of molesting three


United States Rev. Joseph Welsh brothers for two decades. He was suspended after the
(MA) 249 allegations were raised.

In 1964, a mother informed church officials the O'Sullivan


had molested her 12-year-old son. Documents from the time
indicate that the officials were aware of the problem, but no
action was taken. More complaints were reported in 1984,
and O'Sullivan plead guilty in court to molesting an altar
boy. After church officials urged that he not be sent to
United States Rev. Eugene
(MA) O'Sullivan 250 prison, he was released on probation and ordered to have no
contact with children. Nevertheless, he was transferred to a
parish in New Jersey in 1985. He served at four parishes
there, but three of them were never informed of his prior
conviction. O'Sullivan's actions were publicly disclosed in
1993, and he was eventually removed from the ministry.

In 1977 the police caught the priest engaging in a sexual act


with a teenage boy in a car. Bishop Thomas Daily, the same
bishop that ignored complaints about Rev. Shanley, stepped
United States Rev. Edward T. in and convinced the police to let him handle the situation.
(MA) Kelley 251 Daily told the police that the priest would be sent for
treatment, but there is no evidence he ever received
treatment.

A pastor reported in 1974 that Tourigney was involved with


a teenage boy. Both parties denied the charge at the time, but
the boy reported the case to church authorities 11 years later.
United States Rev. Ernest E. Tourigney admitted his guilt and received counseling, and he
(MA) Tourigney 252 was allowed to continue his ministry. New allegations were
reported in 1992. At that time, he received additional
treatment and was removed from the priesthood.

United States Rev. Daniel M. In 1988, Graham was accused of molesting a 14-year-old-
(MA) Graham 253 boy in 1968. Graham admitted to the abuse but was allowed
to continue his ministry. In 1992, another allegation was
made against Graham for abuse perpetuated in the early
1980s. Graham denied the charges, but a 1995 review board
recommended that he be prohibited from serving in a parish
or working with minors. They reversed that decision in 1996,
allowing him to return to full service. He was made area
vicar, in charge of 19 parishes, the same year. Graham was
suspended in 2002 in the midst of the Boston scandal.

Former altar boy Paul Edwards alleged that Foster molested


him on numerous occasions between 1980 and 1985. The
archdiocese put Foster on administrative leave while it
conducted an investigation into the claims. The archdiocese

(MA) Smith Foster reinstated Foster after the investigation, but placed him back
on leave week later after receiving new information from
Edwards about the abuse. 254 In November 2002, Foster
was cleared and reinstated for a second time. 255

DeBerardinis was arrested in August 2002 on charges of


sexually abusing four altar boys from 1968 to. The victims'
United States Brother Fidelis ages ranged from eight thirteen years old at the time of the
(MA) DeBerardinis 256 first abuse. DeBerardinis was indicted on eleven counts,
including rape and attempted rape of a child.

In August 2002, Hurley was indicted on two counts of child


rape. The accuser claims that Hurley abused him as often as
once a month between 1987 and 1988. Hurley befriended the
United States Rev. Paul W. boy during the time that he was the pastor at the boy's church
(MA) Hurley 257 and eventually paid him for performing sexual favors.
Hurley was placed on administrative leave and is restricted
from practicing public ministry.

In the early 1990s, Porter was charged with molesting more


than 130 children in Minnesota, Massachusetts and New
United States Rev. James Porter Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s. He pled guilty in 1993 to
(MA) 258 molesting 28 children and was sentenced to 18 to 20 years in
prison. Porter left the priesthood in the early 1970s.

In April 2002, Desilets was indicted on 27 counts of indecent


assault and battery against 18 altar boys. He is being sued in
United States Fr. Paul Desilets civil court by 20 former altar boys. Investigations are
(MA) 259 currently underway to determine whether church officials
knew of allegations of abuse before transferring Desilets.
United States Sister Gael Biondo Biondo was sued for abusing a girl. Biondowas a teacher at a
(MA) 260 high school in Detroit where the abuse allegedly occurred.

After being convicted of molesting boys in New Hampshire


and undergoing treatment for pedophilia, Burns applied for a
United States Rev. Robert Burns pastor's position in Boston in 1982. He was given a part-time
(MA) 261 associate pastor position. Burns moved on to another Boston
parish and in 1991, the archdiocese received a report that
Burns had repeatedly raped a boy.

In November 1984, Morrissette admitted to improperly


touching a boy. He received treatment and was transferred to
another parish. In 1988, another priest reported to Bishop
United States Rev. Robert
(MA) Morrissette 262 Banks that Morrissette had homosexual relationships and
kept pornography in his room. Morrissette was allowed to
remain in ministry until 1993.

In 1986, Bishop Robert Banks received a report that Meffan


had seduced girls studying to be nuns in the 1960s. Nothing
United States Rev. Robert was done about the complaint. Meffan was pulled from
(MA) Meffan 263 ministry in 1993 after the archdiocese received numerous
complaints that he was luring women into sex.

In the 1960s, Foley fathered two children with a married


woman. Notes from his personnel file indicate that he was
with the woman when she suffered a fatal overdose and did
not call the police until it was too late. In 1994, Foley told
United States Rev. James D. church officials of the woman's death. He was ordered to
(MA) Foley 264 seek treatment and was allowed to live in a rectory and
celebrate mass while receiving therapy. He was placed in a
new parish under restrictions in 1995. Foley was removed
from this parish in December 2002.

He settled a lawsuit in which he was accused of abusing


United States
John Cotter 265 children. He died in 1989.

Daylor was placed on administrative leave in November
United States Sister Ann Daylor 2002 after being accused of committing sexual misconduct
(MA) 266 against a fifth grade girl forty years ago. The abuse was first
reported in October 2002.

United States Rev. Bernard Lane Lane is accused of molesting teenagers at the home he ran
(MA) 267 for troubled youths.
The diocese paid $500,000 in 1994 to settle a sex-abuse case
involving Sullivan and three girls. In April 2002, diocese
United States Rev. John Thomas officials began another investigation of Sullivan. Sullivan
(MI) Sullivan 268 was prohibited from performing religious duties after the
allegations were made. He is now deceased.

He was accused of raping a 48-year-old parishioner in


United States Rev. Komlan Dem October, 2001. Houndjame has been arraigned on the charge.
(MI) Houndjame 269 He had been accused of three instances of sexual misconduct
during previous assignments in Florida.

United States Dennis Wagner Wagner was convicted of assaulting a 13-year- old boy.

Miller was accused of sexually abusing a man over 30 years
ago. Miller resigned from the parish and decided to retire
United States Father Alfred
(MI) Miller 271 after the Archdiocese of Detroit found the allegation
credible.

In 1978, Father DeVita admitted to engaging in sexual


misconduct with a teenage boy. The Diocese paid a $50,000
settlement to the victim's family. He underwent treatment
United States Rev. Thomas
(MI) DeVita 272 and was returned to his parish. The abuse was not made
public until 1993. He will now be removed from his
ministry, in accordance with the new standards.

United States Rev. Jason Sigler He was accused of criminal sexual conduct with a boy 14 or
(MI) 273 under.

He was accused of fondling a 14-year-old boy during the


mid-1980s. He was removed from the priesthood in 1992. In
United States Rev. Harry
(MI) Benjamin 274 August 2002, he was charged with four counts of second-
degree criminal sexual conduct.

He was accused of criminal sexual conduct with a boy 14 or


United States Rev. Edward
(MI) Olszewski 275 under.

Joseph Carne 276 He resigned after being credibly accused of abusing a minor.

United States Rev. Gilbert In 1993, a boy accused DeSutter of molesting him several
(MN) DeSutter 277 years earlier. When the allegation was reported, the victim's
family was assured that DeSutter would retire that year.
However, the family discovered that he was still serving as a
priest in 1999. The victim sued and the case was settled out
of court. DeSutter retired in Arizona. He is not currently
working as a priest.

Kern was transferred from his parish in 1969 after the


mothers of two boys accused him of fondling their sons. In
1977, a 15-year-old boy also accused him of fondling him.
United States Rev. Jerome C. That boy sued and, in the resulting settlement, was promised
(MN) Kern 278 Kern would no longer work in a parish. Kern continued to
serve as associate pastor at a Minnesota church as recently as
February 2002.

In 1990, Jeub was accused of being sexually active with


several women. One woman sued Jeub for sexual abuse
perpetuated against her in 1969, when she was 15 years old.
United States Rev. Richard H. He underwent therapy for sexual compulsion and returned to
(MN) Jeub 279 parish work in 1995. Jeub resigned from his position as
associate pastor of St. Rosa of Lima Catholic Church after a
newspaper article disclosed the allegations against him.

Several teenage boys brought lawsuits against Wajda in the


United States Rev. Joseph Wajda late 1980s, alleging sexual abuse. Wajda was assigned to an
(MN) 280 administrative position in the archdiocese, where he still
serves.

In May 2002 a man accused Dudley of fondling him in the


1950s, when he served as an altar boy. The vicar general for
the archdiocese says that a female victim reported in 1999

(MN) Dudley 281 that Dudley abused her in the 1970s, but there was
insufficient evidence to support her allegation at the time.

them at the pulpit and suing Andreas for defamation. In
November, Andreas countersued.
In 1982, the mother of three young boys accused Valentine
of molesting her sons. She claims that at the time church
officials failed to respond. In 1998, the archdiocese settled

reassigned to three parishes over 12 years. He was forced to

to pay the settlement. Herek was previously convicted in
1998 on charges of child pornography and sexual assault of a
child (for abuse that occurred between 1992 and 1997). He
served two and one-half years in prison and then spent
additional time in a mental health center.

In 2002, authorities charged Roberts with two counts of


"gross lewdness," two counts of "using a minor to produce
pornography," and five counts of child abuse and neglect.

In February 2002, the diocese of Manchester gave


prosecutors the names of 14 priests accused of abusing

been removed from duty as a result of the accusations.

and reassigned to administrative church work. ABC News
found him working as a priest in Mexico City in 2002.

Ferraro was arrested in April 2002 on charges of child rape,
indecent assault and battery of a child, committed between
United States Romano Ferraro 1973 and 1980. Ferraro previously was suspended from all
(NY) 308 priestly ministries after separate accusations in 1988 and
1989.

In 1996, three nuns reported the abuse of adolescent boys by


three priests in the1970s. Of those priests one had died, one
Rev. Anthony denied the charges, and the third confessed and was
United States Failla and two removed. That priest (Father Failla) resigned and moved to
(NY) unidentified Florida. Law enforcement officials were never notified. The
priests 309 nuns made the case public this year in light of the recent
scandals.

United States Rev. Kenneth One of six priests the Archdiocese of New York ordered to

abuse allegations. The names of all priests have not been
identified, but they were reported to the New York district
attorney the first week of April. They are said to all be
involved in "grave" incidents of sexual misconduct.

relationships with several women over the course of many

Gallant was accused in 2002 of engaging in sexual

In March 2002, Smith was accused of inappropriate sexual


contact with three minors. He denies the allegations. The

administrative leave during the investigation.

In 1990, Hebert was accused of sexually abusing a teenage


boy during a camping trip. Police did not charge him at the
United States Rev. Donald time. In April 2002, Hebert was removed from his parish
(NY) Hebert 314 position because of the allegations and reassigned to an
administrative position.

Two women who allege they were sexually abused by


O'Doherty in the late 1970s brought suit against the priest,
his church, and the Diocese of Ogdensburg in April 2002.
Four other women claim abuse by O'Doherty, but are not

dismissed by the courts in 1979. O'Doherty is currently
living in a home in Missouri for priests who are no longer
assigned to churches.

United States Rev. Ronald H. Paquin was first removed from parish work in 1990, after
(NY) Paquin 316 accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced. From 1990
to1996, the diocese received 13 more accusations for abuse
occurring during the previous two decades. Six of those
cases resulted in settlements of more than $500,000. The
church recommended that Paquin be removed in 1994, but in
1997 he was reinstated under the condition that he have no
contact with minors. He was assigned to work as a hospital
chaplain in 1998, but was removed in 2000 after additional
complaints of abuse (which had occurred in the 1970s and
1980s) arose. In May 2002, Paquin was indicted on three
counts of rape of a child.

In 2002, a former seminarian came forward with allegations


that Kavanagh made inappropriate and abusive gestures
towards him between 1978 and 1983, while the accuser was
attending seminary. The accuser eventually left the seminary

Lyons was accused in May 2002 of sexual misconduct with

Msgr. Placa was accused of sexually abusing a high school


student in the mid 1970s, when he served as dean in charge
of student discipline at a preparatory seminary. The victim
registered a formal complaint when prosecutors contacted
United States Msgr. Alan Placa him in the spring of 2002. Placa had been serving on a
(NY) 321 diocesan panel that investigated allegations of clerical sex
abuse. A grand jury is currently reviewing Placa's treatment
of other sex abuse cases. Placa was removed from the sex
abuse panel in April of 2002 and was suspended from all
pastoral duties in June 2002.

United States Rev. John A Catholic school principal alleged in 2002 that Rev.
(NY) Thompson 322 Thompson used "sexually explicit language" to intimidate
her. She claims that Thompson was sexually involved with
an 18-year-old-man and that he misused church funds. When
approached about his indiscretions, Thompson allegedly
made derogatory and harassing remarks to the principal. She
has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Thompson, Queens
Vicar Msgr. James Spengler, and Brooklyn Bishop Thomas
Daily. Rev. Thompson was forced to resign when the
allegations arose.

The mother of two boys who where were molested by Fr.


Casey wrote to Bishop Matthew Clark in 1998, after learning
that Casey was living at a rectory and was teaching religion

in response to her request to prohibit Casey's access to
children. Casey died in 2000.

On New Year's Day, 2000, Udegbulem, a visiting priest from


Nigeria, allegedly sodomized and raped a woman in
Brooklyn. The victim reported the abuse to church officials
at the time, but did not alert state authorities. The case was
reopened in 2002 when the Diocese turned over records to
the police in the wake of the current abuse crisis. Udegbulem
United States Rev. Cyriacus was charged in June 2002 with 10 counts of rape and
(NY) Udegbulem 324 sodomy. After the initial incident, the diocese of Brooklyn
dismissed Udegbulem and reported the case to his superior
in Nigeria. Although he was expected to return to Nigeria, he
went to Texas, where he worked in the church health center

Rev. Kiare was arrested in June 2002 on charges he molested


a 12-year-old boy. Kiare was visiting the US from Kenya on

McGovern expressed shock over the charge.

Haight is accused of abusing a 12-year-old boy while serving


as a hospital chaplain. The diocese of Albany paid nearly $1

United States Rev. Mark Haight settled another case involving Haight in 1989, though it
(NY) 327 refuses to reveal the amount of that settlement. Haight
received treatment after the first allegation in 1989 and
returned to the ministry. He was removed from pastoral

Eusibius Beltran became aware of Rapp's past in 1994. He
agreed to keep Rapp in the archdiocese for the next five
years. During that time, Rapp is accused of molesting and
abusing three teenage boys. He plead no contest to two
charges of lewd molestation in 1999 and was sentenced to 40
years in prison. Two of the victims have already received
large settlement amounts and a third has a lawsuit pending.

to serve as a priest until his death in 1985.

In 1999, Gammond's first accuser went public. This event


opened the floodgates to multitudes of abuse accusations
against him. The abuse spanned from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Former altar boys claimed Gammond groped them during
United States Rev. Maurice camping trips, in his car, in the rectory, and during
(OR) Gammond 357 confession. Gammond denied all of the charges, but was
caught on tape by a former altar boy saying that children
"throw themselves" at him. Gammond died in September
2002.

Three men accused St. Arnaud of sexually abusing them


during the mid- to late-1970s. The first victim claims he
United States Rev. Pacome St. reported the abuse to other priests at the time it occurred, but
(OR) Arnaud 358 St. Arnaud was transferred to a new parish, where he abused
the other two. The priest died in 1992.

Corry admitted to sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy in the

Kos was convicted in 1997 of molesting three altar boys, and

prison sentences.

Flynn was accused in 1997 of having a sexual relationship


with a woman twenty years earlier, when she was a minor.
He left ministry at that time and underwent a year of

announced he would retire.

In 1981, Renteria was accused of sexually molesting a 14-


year-old boy. At that time Bishop Joseph Delaney confronted
Renteria, but the priest was unable to confirm or deny the
incident. Renteria left the parish and worked in several other
parishes, where he reportedly engaged in disruptive behavior

from ministry because of the former allegation. Upon
announcing the removal, Bishop Delaney expressed regret at

Rule was suspended in August 2002 after being accused of


sexual misconduct against a high school seminary student in
United States Rev. Steven Rule 1976. A review board investigated the claim and found that,
(VA) 380 while Rule placed the student in an "inappropriate" situation,
the behavior did not warrant removing Rule from the
ministry. He was reinstated in November 2002.

Blankenship was removed from his prison chaplaincy in


United States John P. August 2002 after admitting to sexual abuse of teenager

Roszel was placed on administrative leave in 1994 after a


woman accused him of abusing her as a child. The woman
