Brazil Fr. Jose Ari He was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the rape of two
Degrandis 17 women, one of whom was 16 years old when she was raped
twice by the priest.
Canada Rev. Barry In 1974, Glendinning pleaded guilty to six counts of gross
Glendinning 26 indecency for the sexual abuse of four brothers, another boy
and one girl between 1968 and 1974. He received three years
of probation and spent time in a treatment center. Later he
worked in a rural parish in Alberta and admitted to "sexual
improprieties" with young boys there. He was transferred to
a parish in Toronto in 1983. A supervising clergy member for
that church later claimed to have no knowledge of
Glendinning's criminal past.
Canada Leo Charron 27 Charron molested a boy for more than five years.
Canada Joseph Bonomi 28 Bonomi was accused of having sex with a teenager.
Prior to being ordained, Houston worked as a supervisor at a
residential dormitory between 1960 and1962. In 1962, he
plead guilty to several counts of "buggery and gross sexual
indecency" with five students. Because of the nature of the
abuse, the judge in the case declared Houston a "dangerous
sexual offender" and sentenced him to an indeterminate jail
Father Martin term. He was released on parole after serving 10 years. He

Houston 29 went on to attend seminary and was ordained in 1990,
despite the claim by many that the church was aware of
Houston's criminal background. He was transferred from his
first parish after complaints from parishioners. Since the
media exposed his past in 2002, many have complained that
they were never informed of his prior misdeeds.
England Frs. Joseph Three Jesuit priests were charged with indecent assault on
Dooley, Clifford former pupils at a leading Catholic school. This brings to
Taunton, and
eight the number of former staff accused of assaults on boys
during the 1970s and '80s at Stonyhurst College and its
George Earle 40 elementary school, St. Mary's Hall. One schoolmaster, Rory
O'Brien, was arrested last year and is due to face trial on
charges of indecency involving two former pupils.
England Fr. Adrian This priest has been sentenced to six years in prison for
McLeish 45 sexually abusing boys while exchanging pornographic
material with a pedophile ring on the Internet. He had built a
library of 11,000 images on computer discs in what was the
biggest haul ever in Britain of pornography involving the
Internet. In addition to pleading guilty to eight charges of
possessing and distributing indecent pictures and two
charges of importing pornographic videos of children,
McLeish also confessed to 12 charges of indecently
assaulting four boys from ages 10 to 18.
Ireland Father Brendan Smyth was jailed in 1997 after admitting guilt in 74 cases of
abusing male and female children from the 1960s t through
the 1990s. Reporters allege that senior church officials were
Smyth 53 aware of Smyth's criminal behavior and transferred him from
parish to parish in order to cover up the abuse. 54

Ireland Desmond Connell, He was named as co-defendant in the Fr. Ivan Payne case.

The media recently revealed that in the early 1980s, Ledwith
was accused of sexually harassing seminarians when he

This former Franciscan brother plead guilty to eight charges
of indecently assaulting eight boys between ages nine and 16
during the period 1969-1972. He was given a two-year

Mexico Rev, Edgar In September 2002, Hidalgo was arrested in Mexico City
and extradited to Italy where he was wanted since November

Salvador Coria family claims they reported the abuse to a priest and a

action. Eventually the family reported the complaint to the
Attorney General's office, and charges were filed against

Poland Archbishop He was accused of sexually molesting young seminarians.
Juliusz Paetz of One priest claims he was relieved of his duties after
Poznan 77 reporting the abuse to the archbishop. Paetz resigned after
the Vatican initiated an investigation of the case; he still
denies the allegations.
United States Rev. Patrick Colleary first underwent treatment for behavioral problems
(AZ) Colleary 83 in 1997. After being released in 1998, he was assigned to a
parish in Scottsdale. By 1999, the Diocese of Phoenix had
received at least six complaints of improper sexual conduct
by Colleary, spanning the three decades of his ministry
(three of the complaints had occurred between 1998 and
1999). In May 2002, one of his victims came forward to
accuse Colleary of fondling her when she was a teenager in
the mid 1970s and having consensual sex with her when she
was an adult. Colleary also admitted in May w002 to
fathering a child with another parishioner in 1978. On May
30, 2002, civil authorities announced they were opening a
criminal investigation of Fr. Collery and the Diocese of
Phoenix. 84

In 2000, the Diocese of Santa Rosa settled a lawsuit with
four of his accusers for $1.6 million. In April 2002, he was
United States Rev. Don Kimball convicted of molesting a 13-year-old girl in 1981. At the
(CA) 98 same trial, he was acquitted of the charge of raping a 14-
year-old girl in 1977. He no longer performs priestly duties
but has not been dismissed from the priesthood.
United States Rev. Tom Accusations of child molestation were reported against
Naughton in early April, 2002. Naughton is accused of
molesting a child in Texas in 1978. He was removed from
(CA) Naughton 107 church duties and placed on administrative leave in April
2002.
United States Father Denis In April 2002, Lyons was accused of molesting a teenage
(CA) Lyons 113 boy in the 1980s. At the time of the new allegations, officials
at his diocese also revealed that Lyons had admitted in 1993
to engaging in "inappropriate behavior" with two men, and
that in 1994, parents of two brothers had complained that
Lyons had molested their teenage sons in 1979. After both
accusations, Lyons was sent for "extensive counseling," but
he was not removed from his ministry until this year. Lyons
was placed on paid administrative leave in April 2002, and
the case was forwarded to the police.
United States Rev. Edward Brother Connor is said to have abused a kitchen worker at a
(CA) Thomas Burke and Jesuit Center and Rev. Burke was sentenced in June 2002 to
Brother Charles two years in prison for molesting a retarded man who

worked in the same kitchen. The abuse, alleged to have

occurred over a two and a half- to three-year period, was
first reported to Jesuit officials in 1995. In 1997, a friend of
the victims reported the abuse to police, but the investigation
was not completed because the victims would not talk to the
authorities. The investigation was again pursued in 2000,
when one of the victims came forward. At this time, Burke
admitted to the abuse, and the Jesuits transferred him to
Santa Clara University. Connor plead guilty to one count of
"committing lewd acts on a dependent adult" in 2001. He
was sentenced to six months of home detention.
United States Andrew Anderson He was convicted of kidnapping and fondling a 14-year-old

accused McSheffery of sexual abuse. McSheffery, who
served as director of the school, allegedly sexually molested
the 9- and 10-year-old boys at the school. One of the victims

teenage seminary student in the 1970s. The Missouri diocese
where the abuse occurred paid the victim $125,000 in 1996.

The parents of a deceased man claim their son was abused
by the two priests between 1974 and 1977. They assert that
the church tried to cover up the allegations when the victim

charges with Bush and that he never denied them. They also
said he agreed to resign.
United States Rev. Lawrence In 1977, parents of a teenage boy complained to church
(IL) Gibbs 178 officials that Gibbs engaged in inappropriate behavior with
their son and his friends. He was allowed to remain in the
ministry, and in 1980 was accused on engaging of sexual
misconduct with several boys. At that time, Bishop Joseph
Imesch moved Gibbs to a new church, where he allegedly
abused several boys. One boy, claiming Gibbs had molested
him for seven years, sued the diocese in 1993. The church
settled the suit in 1998. Gibbs left the priesthood in the
1990s.

Robert Friese 182 He was convicted of abusing a 14-year- old.

Vogler was caught by federal authorities investigating a
national child pornography ring in the mid 1990s. Police
found a large trunk full of "hardcore" child pornography in
his possession. Vogler was convicted in 1996; he served one

(IN) 183 offender. According to ABC News, after serving his prison
sentence, Vogler was moved to a new parish in the same
town where the arrest occurred (Evansville, IN). He
continues to serve there.

United States Rev. Francis In May and June 2002, two women accused Schoering of
(IN) Schoering 187 fondling them. One claims the incident occurred when she
was a child and the second when she was 18. Schoering
denies the allegations. He was suspended during the
investigations.188 The board appointed to review the
allegations cleared Schoering and recommended he return to
active ministry. 189
United States Rev. Gilbert In 1984, Rev. Gilbert Gauthe admitted he abused 37 boys
(LA) Gauthe 209 (although there is speculation he may have molested as
many as 150). Gauthe accepted a plea bargain in 1985 and
was sentenced to 20 years in prison. After being released
from prison in 1995, he was again imprisoned for two years
on a new accusation that he had raped a 12-year-old girl in
the 1980s. Gauthe was again released in February 2000.

Gerald Prinz 210 Prinz abused a boy.

Andries was first accused in 1998 of fondling a boy, but at
that time his parents asked authorities to not to prosecute in
United States Rev. John Andries order to protect their child. Andries was sent to a treatment
(LA) 211 center after this initial complaint, but he later resumed work
in that parish. In 2001 he was again accused of sexual
misconduct with a teenage boy, in the same parish.
United States Rev. Raymond- Church officials reported problems with Lauzon from the
(ME) Joseph Lauzon time he was in seminary. Still, he was shuffled from parish to
219 parish before becoming director of a church thrift shop in
Maine. There, he is accused of abusing six brothers. He was
indicted on charges of gross misconduct with two of the
victims in 1984. After serving four and one-half months in
jail, Lauzon returned to parish work. In 1990 he joined a
Franciscan monastery and three years later he moved to
Lithuania. Several additional lawsuits filed in the 1990s
accused Lauzon of abusing children in the 1970s and 1980s.
United States Rev. Robert Between the mid-1960s and 1988, church officials sent
(MD) Petrella 225 Petrella to receive psychiatric treatment three times,
following allegations of abuse. Each time he was returned to
his ministry. Petrella was dismissed in 1989 after a new
allegation arose. He was sentenced to three months in jail for
that abuse, but served only seven days. During the recent
media attention on this topic, several other men have come
forward with reports that Petrella molested them as children.
Despite the fact that Petrella has been removed, his
archdiocese has received calls from individuals who claim
they've seen Petrella wearing a priest's collar recently.
United States Raymond Melville Melville is one of six former seminarians accused of
(MD) 230 sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. In 1990, a boy in Baltimore accused
Melville of abusing him from 1980 to 1985 while he was at
St. Mary's. A man in Maine says Melville assaulted him from
1985-1992.
United States Peter McCutcheon He was convicted for molesting three youths.

A nun reported in 1990 that Schwind raped her in 1989.
According to records in the Maryland State Attorney
General's office, the church requested that the victim drop
United States Rev. Thomas R. the case and insisted that Schwind would receive counseling.
(MD) Schwind 240 Instead, he was transferred to another parish. He eventually
left the Catholic church and now serves as a Pentecostal
minister. In 2002, at the request of the victim, the state
reopened the case.
United States John J. Geoghan Geoghan was convicted in January of 2002 of molesting a
(MA) 242 ten-year-old boy; he currently faces two more criminal
charges. The church had previously settled about 50 lawsuits
against Geoghan for more than $10 million. In March 2002,
the Archdiocese of Boston agreed to pay up to $30 million to
86 people who accused him of child molestation. Cardinal
Law repeatedly reassigned Geoghan to new parishes after
allegations of abuse surfaced in 1984 and again in 1989. He
removed Geoghan from parish duty in 1998.
United States Rev. Joseph E. Many people came forward during March and April of 2002,
(MA) Birmingham 248 accusing Birmingham of molesting them over a thirty-year
period. Several individuals claim that they reported the
abuse to church officials, who transferred Birmingham to
other parishes after learning of the abuse. The Archdiocese
of Boston settled an abuse case against Birmingham in 1996,
paying $60,000 to the victim. Birmingham is deceased.
Several plaintiffs are currently suing the Archdiocese,
Cardinal Law and New Hampshire Bishop John
McCromack.
United States Rev. Daniel M. In 1988, Graham was accused of molesting a 14-year-old-
(MA) Graham 253 boy in 1968. Graham admitted to the abuse but was allowed
to continue his ministry. In 1992, another allegation was
made against Graham for abuse perpetuated in the early
1980s. Graham denied the charges, but a 1995 review board
recommended that he be prohibited from serving in a parish
or working with minors. They reversed that decision in 1996,
allowing him to return to full service. He was made area
vicar, in charge of 19 parishes, the same year. Graham was
suspended in 2002 in the midst of the Boston scandal.
United States Rev. Bernard Lane Lane is accused of molesting teenagers at the home he ran
(MA) 267 for troubled youths.
The diocese paid $500,000 in 1994 to settle a sex-abuse case
involving Sullivan and three girls. In April 2002, diocese
United States Rev. John Thomas officials began another investigation of Sullivan. Sullivan
(MI) Sullivan 268 was prohibited from performing religious duties after the
allegations were made. He is now deceased.
United States Dennis Wagner Wagner was convicted of assaulting a 13-year- old boy.

ago. Miller resigned from the parish and decided to retire

United States Rev. Gilbert In 1993, a boy accused DeSutter of molesting him several
(MN) DeSutter 277 years earlier. When the allegation was reported, the victim's
family was assured that DeSutter would retire that year.
However, the family discovered that he was still serving as a
priest in 1999. The victim sued and the case was settled out
of court. DeSutter retired in Arizona. He is not currently
working as a priest.

(NE) 294 In June 2002, a jury awarded the man (now age 23) and his
mother $800,000 in damages. The Omaha Archdiocese
admitted negligence in supervising the priest, and was forced
to pay the settlement. Herek was previously convicted in
1998 on charges of child pornography and sexual assault of a
child (for abuse that occurred between 1992 and 1997). He
served two and one-half years in prison and then spent
additional time in a mental health center.
United States Gerald Chalifour He was removed after he was reported to a bishop for
(NH) 297 molesting a minor.

In 1985, the victim first disclosed to officials in the Diocese
of Paterson that Hanley had sexually abused him between
1974 and 1981. Hanley was removed in 1986, "once the
diocese had a reasonable standard of information," according
United States Rev. James T. to a spokeswoman for the diocese. The victim was paid
(NJ) Hanley 301 $241,000 in a 1987 settlement that bought his silence. He
broke that agreement in March 2002 to speak of his
experience. Law enforcement authorities were not notified
until the statute of limitations had expired.

leave after he was accused of sexually abusing a teen more
than 25 years ago. Rainforth denied the allegations, but
stepped down as associate pastor at his church.
United States Rev. Kenneth One of six priests the Archdiocese of New York ordered to
(NY) Jesselli 310 suspend priestly duties in April 2002, in the wake of sexual
abuse allegations. The names of all priests have not been
identified, but they were reported to the New York district
attorney the first week of April. They are said to all be
involved in "grave" incidents of sexual misconduct.
United States Rev. Ronald H. Paquin was first removed from parish work in 1990, after
(NY) Paquin 316 accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced. From 1990
to1996, the diocese received 13 more accusations for abuse
occurring during the previous two decades. Six of those
cases resulted in settlements of more than $500,000. The
church recommended that Paquin be removed in 1994, but in
1997 he was reinstated under the condition that he have no
contact with minors. He was assigned to work as a hospital
chaplain in 1998, but was removed in 2000 after additional
complaints of abuse (which had occurred in the 1970s and
1980s) arose. In May 2002, Paquin was indicted on three
counts of rape of a child.
United States Rev. John A Catholic school principal alleged in 2002 that Rev.
(NY) Thompson 322 Thompson used "sexually explicit language" to intimidate
her. She claims that Thompson was sexually involved with
an 18-year-old-man and that he misused church funds. When
approached about his indiscretions, Thompson allegedly
made derogatory and harassing remarks to the principal. She
has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Thompson, Queens
Vicar Msgr. James Spengler, and Brooklyn Bishop Thomas
Daily. Rev. Thompson was forced to resign when the
allegations arose.
United States Rev. Daniel In November 2002, McBride was charged with sexually

prosecutor offered McBride a plea bargain but McBride
turned down the offer. McBride retired from the priesthood
in 1987.

United States Rev. James Rapp Rapp was accused of molesting a teenage boy in Michigan in
(OK) 351 the early 1980s. In 1986 he was sent to a treatment center for
sexual disorders and he was hired to work in Oklahoma in
1991 (although the archbishop there claimed to have no
knowledge of Rapp's past when he was hired). Archbishop
Eusibius Beltran became aware of Rapp's past in 1994. He
agreed to keep Rapp in the archdiocese for the next five
years. During that time, Rapp is accused of molesting and
abusing three teenage boys. He plead no contest to two
charges of lewd molestation in 1999 and was sentenced to 40
years in prison. Two of the victims have already received
large settlement amounts and a third has a lawsuit pending.
