ATM TRANSMISSION

CELL TRANSFER FUNCTIONS

Cell transfer function

It means transfer of cells through atm network. It is supported by functions such as

1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

Generation of cells Transmission of cells Multiplexing/concentrating Cross connecting of cells Switching of cells

Generation of cells
BISDN sends all its information mapped into cells in which no additional packetizing is required in atm network Packetizers required for inter networking with non-atm equipment Atm packetizer cuts stm channel into pieces that fit atm format Signal conversionis required where both atm & non atm interfaces are present

Need to convert non-atm signals to atm cell format willl arise especially during introductotry phase of atm networks.

Multiplexing/concentration of cells
There are 2 types of mux-1.ATM mux 2.STM mux STM MUX --no concentration takes place --that is idle cells are not removed as it does not process the signal payload carrying ATM cells ATM mux --concentration takes place --incoming idle cells are sorted DEGREE OF CONCENTRATING depends on Traffic characteristics Requested quality of service

Cross connecting of cells

Connecting input vps/vcs to output vps/vcs by vpthrough atm cells It also eliminates idle cells It is used to acess network to separate customer traffic i.e to local switch from fixed route Connection establishment is according to signal protocol. A cross connection is controlled through management operation
