APLNG 808 Lesson Plan 4 CONTENT-BASED PROJECT INSTRUCTION Academic Level: Proficiency Level: Beginner Level - 2 Background: Korean

n ESL students Pets (Likes / Dislikes / Advantages / Disadvantages) 60 Minutes per week / 8 - Week Duration / 10 Students per class The purpose of this semi-structured project is to provide an interactive studentcentered environment to encompass and augment each students overall knowledge of pets, while at the same time enhancing all four L2 competencies. While basic support and guidance for the project is necessarily driven from the instructors seat, this project will be somewhat hybrid; students contribute input and dictate enough of the direction, granting what I term to be, a vested interest in the project. While one might argue the real-world significance of pets, certainly pets exist somewhere within every students interests, particularly given the academic level of these beginning students. Lesson Objectives: Upon each group of two students selection of one type of pet out of five available types, over a period of eight weeks, each group will be introduced to new vocabulary, as well as having to research, bring in pictures of their selected pet, write simple sentences, and discuss their chosen pet-related themes, i.e., pet-boarding, pet-grooming, pet-shipping, and pet-training as associated to their chosen pet. Students will be able to benefit from this lesson by having to use English in order to learn about their selected pet topic. Since their topics content will be drawn from a large variation of informational sources both inside and outside of the classroom, improvement in their academic language and study skills can be anticipated. Reading, writing, listening, and oral comprehension will improve as students take turns collaborating on their selected topics both in their small groups, as well as within the entire class. Since each student selects his or her own type of pet, it is expected that the motivational level to participate will be exceedingly high. Each lesson will be increasingly more challenging, requiring both additional brainstorming, and further data collection. Periodic PowerPoint presentations
