FEMA G489 Management of Spontaneous Volunteers in Disasters

October 3 & 4, 2012 - Butte, Montana

Quality Inn Big Sky Conference Facility 2100 Cornell Avenue Butte MT 59701
Lead by nationally-recognized instructors De Flounlacker and Merilee White, these back-to-back one-day offerings address key challenges and 'lessons learned' in managing volunteer staff and donations during disasters. G288 Local Volunteer & Donations Management is designed to strengthen the abilities of local jurisdictions to successfully prepare for and handle volunteer and donations management issues that may arise. The course content and activities may also serve as a template for local operations, addressing areas of donated unsolicited goods, unaffiliated volunteers, and undesignated cash. G489 Management of Spontaneous Volunteers in Disasters introduces the skills and planning considerations that are required to manage large numbers of people who are not affiliated with an experienced relief organization, but who want to help in disasters. The course will cover the current issues and challenges, examine pre-disaster planning considerations, developing a plan, and explain the role and setup of a Volunteer Reception Center, and examine best practices. All course participants should be familiar with their own State and local/tribal agency Emergency Operations Plan annex on the use of spontaneous volunteers and volunteers affiliated with relief organizations. In addition, the individuals should have a working knowledge of the Incident Command System/National Incident Management System. Target audience: - State/tribal/local emergency managers - Members of VOADs (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) - Public Information Officers - Government/private-sector liaisons
