California pizza style

California-style pizza focuses on non-traditional pizza ingredients, such as fresh produce and barbecued meats. California Pizza Kitchen and Wolfgang Puck's restaurants are some of the places that popularize this type of pizza.

Fortune Cookies
A thoroughly American invention. Some say they were first made by Makota Hagiwara, a landscape architect and caretaker of the Japanese Tea Garden. A fortune cookie is a crisp cookie usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and oil with a "fortune" wrapped inside. A "fortune" is a piece of paper with words of faux wisdom or a vague prophecy. The message inside may also include a Chinese phrase with translation or a list of lucky numbers used by some as lottery numbers, some of which have become actual winner numbers.

Sourdough Bread
California's native yeasts give sourdough its distinctive taste, and Boudin's have been making it since the Gold Rush.

Green Goddess Dressing Invented at San Francisco's Palace Hotel in the 1920's in honor of William Archer's hit play of the same name.Green goddess is a salad dressing, typically containing mayonnaise, sour cream, chervil, chives, anchovy, tarragon, lemon juice, and pepper.

Cobb Salad This classic salad of bacon, chicken and avocados was invented at Hollywood's legendary Brown Derby. The Cobb salad is a main-dish garden salad made from chopped salad greens (iceberg lettuce, watercress, endives, and Romaine lettuce), tomato, crisp bacon, boiled or roasted chicken breast, hard-boiled egg, avocado, chives, red-wine vinaigrette and Roquefort cheese.
