Okay class, kindly listen so that you can answer my questions later. Are you ready to listen? ok then Ill start:
Pygmalion and Galatea A gifted young sculptor of Cyprus, named Pygmalion, was a woman hater.

Students: Yes, maam.

The students will listen attentively to the teacher. Detesting the faults beyond measure which nature has given to women, He resolved never to marry. His art, he told himself, was enough for him. Nevertheless, the statue he made and devoted all his genius to was that of a woman. Ok class, why do you think Pygmalion didnt want to marry? Very good. But if he hated women, why do think he made a statue of a woman? Any guess? Lets see if your guesses are correct. Either he could not dismiss what he so disapproved of from his mind as easily as from his life, or else he was bent on forming a perfect woman and showing men the deficiencies of the kind they had to put up with. However that was, he labored long and devotedly on the statue and produced a most exquisite work of art. But lovely as it was he could not rest content. He kept on working at it and daily under his skillful fingers it grew more beautiful. No woman ever born, no statue He made a statue so that he could show men that ever made, could approach it. their wives are imperfect. Ok, can someone tell the reason why he made a statue The statue was very beautiful and that it didnt look who is a woman? like it was a statue. Very good, what can you say about the statue, based from the description given? because he didnt like women To show that women were very imperfect

Because he was really determined to show that women cant come close to the beauty of his work.

Alright, but what can you say about the phrase, But lovely as it was he could not rest content.? Any suggestions? Very good. He really wanted to show men how imperfect women are. Now, who can give guesses to might happen next? Let us see if you are correct When nothing could be added to its perfections, a strange fate had befallen its creator: he had fallen in love, deeply, passionately in love, with the thing he had He will fall in love with the statue

made. It must be said in explanation that the statue did not look like a statue; no one would have thought it was ivory or stone, but warm human flesh, motionless for a moment only. Such was the wondrous power of this disdainful young man. The supreme achievement of art was his, the art of concealing art. But from that time on, the gender he scorned had their revenge. Alright class, who can tell me what had happened to Pygmalion? Why do you think so?

Pygmalion fell in love with the statue he created maam Because the statue was so beautiful and had no imperfections It means that through the statue the women of Cyprus had their revenge because Pygmalion fell in love with it He felt sad and desperate, because the statue could not reciprocate his love.

What can you say about the phrase: the gender he scorned had their revenge? What do you think Pygmalion feels when he fell in love with the statue? Very good class. Ok lets continue with the story: He kissed those enticing lips they could not kiss him back; he caressed her hands, her face they were unresponsive; he took her in his arms she remained a cold and passive form. For a time he tried to pretend, as children do with their toys, he dressed her in rich robes; he would bring her gifts and flowers and imagine that she was pleased. But he was not a child; he could not keep on pretending. In the end he gave up; he loved a lifeless thing and he was utterly and hopelessly wretched. Ok class, what can you say about Pygmalions action?

He was obsessed with his work that he was pretending that she was real. I think maam he will destroy the statue/ I think maam he will pray to the gods.

Very good, what do you think will happen next?

Those were nice insights, lets see who will get the right answer. This singular passion did not long remain concealed from the goddess of Passionate Love. Venus was interested in something that seldom came her way, a new kind of lover and she determined to help a young man who could be enamored and yet original. The feast day of Venus was especially honored in Cyprus, the island which first received the goddess after she rose from the foam. There too was Pygmalion. He dared to ask the goddess only that he might find a maiden like his statue, but Venus knew what he really wanted and gave him a sign. Pygmalion sought his house and his love. There she stood on her pedestal, entrancingly

beautiful. He caressed her and she felt warm, he kissed her on the lips and felt it grow soft, he clasped her wrist; blood was pulsing there. Venus, he thought. This was the goddess doing. Venus herself graced their marriage with her presence; Pygmalion named the statue Galatea and they had a son named Paphos, after Venus favorite city. -ENDOkay class who got the correct answer our previous question? Very good ____ Why do you think that Venus liked the love that Pygmalion had shown? Very good!

It was ____ maam

Because it was unusual maam, unlike other men who liked real women, Pygmalion loved a statue and she had never seen such love before.

C. Post Listening: Ok, class thats it for our lesson today, now lets answer the questions you gave before the story 1. Why did Pygmalion hate women? 2. Who is Galatea? 3. Student 1: he hated women because of the faults they possess. Student 2: Galatea is the statue that Pygmalion created and had fallen in love with. Student 3: The story is about Pygmalion falling in love with his sculpture and Venus granted his prayer by making Galatea come to life. Student 4: Pygmalion was the creator and lover of Galatea.
