Directions: Read over the experiment below.
Bart believes that mice exposed to microwaves will become extra strong (maybe hes been reading too
much Radioactive Man). He decides to perform this experiment by placing 10 mice in a microwave for
10 seconds. He compared these 10 mice to another 10 mice that had not been exposed. His test
consisted of a heavy block of wood that blocked the mouse food. He found that 8 out of 10 of the
microwaved mice were able to push the block away. 7 out of 10 of the non-microwaved mice were
able to do the same.
Determine if the experiment has the five important parts in the space below:

Objective: I can solve the problem of the floating egg using my knowledge of experimental
design.
Homework: Complete HW#14
To study the effects of common substances on the heart rate of a tiny aquatic organism known as
Daphnia, students placed a Daphnia in a drop of water on a glass slide. The students then added 1 or
more drops of a test substance dissolved in water to the slide, waited 10 seconds, then counted heart
beats for 10 seconds. The students used a clean slide and a new Daphnia each time. Their data table is
shown below.

Pre-Lab Questions:
1. State the problem: ___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
2. Formulate your hypothesis: If _________________________________________________,
then _______________________________________________________________________.
3. Identify the independent variable in our laboratory: ________________________________
4. Identify the dependent variable in our laboratory: __________________________________
Background Skills:
In this laboratory you will need to demonstrate your ability to use a metric ruler. Perform the following
measurements with your ruler, and then have you instructor initial at the bottom of this section.
Reading a metric ruler:
1. How many centimeters are represented in the picture below? __________________
3. Using your metric ruler, measure the thickness of the laboratory counter. Be sure to use centimeters for
your answer. __________________________
4. Using your metric ruler, measure the width of one floor tile. Be sure to use centimeters for your answer.

Am

Alive?
I consume liquid fuel and anything that I touch. I require oxygen to stay alive and I eat wood. I can
move from place to place, including across the valley or woods. I radiate heat and light but Im also
wild and uncontrollable. I range in temperatures but generally I keep in balance and keep myself at the
temperature needed to stay alive. If I dont, I die. I can grow very quickly. The energy I have can be
hazardous and cause great ruin because I can hide and set traps to aid in my destruction. I can be tamed
under certain conditions, however. I can reproduce if the conditions are right but I can die in certain
situations. When I reproduce, my offspring has the same qualities that I have. I can reproduce all by
myself. I am dangerous so if I get out of hand I will destroy everything around me. I try to infect
everything with my rebellious nature and I aim to destroy my surroundings.
