Problem Statement One of the major problems Ive encountered in Mumbai is the massive traffic jams in most of the

places. Analysis 1. Mumbai is one of the most populated cities in the world, and the one place where one truly experiences this fact is on the roads. Most of the Mumbai roads are jam packed with cars, scooters and auto rickshaws at all times of the day. This coupled with the fact that most of the drivers seem to have an utter disregard for traffic rules seems to be the prime cause of delays due to traffic jams. Jumping of the signal light causes a deadlock, especially in cross roads. 2. The peak traffic hours are 9 am to 11.30 am in the morning and 7 pm to 10.30 pm in the night. This is when the office goers and school/college students typically travel. Thus certain routes have heavy traffic, including in the trains while others dont, leading to improper use of resources. 3. The roads are narrow and cant be widened after a certain extent. 4. Parking space is pretty limited in many shopping complexes and markets. Suggestions 1. Most of the offices are in South Mumbai and there is a heavy traffic towards it during the mornings and vice versa in the evenings. If possible some of the offices could be relocated, or at least the new offices could be constructed in other areas. 2. The office and college timings could be adjusted in such a way that they work in a shift system, so that the maximum traffic isnt concentrated at a particular time. 3. Entry of cars and two wheelers should be restricted in congested market places. Development of a proper parking area is a must.
