Statement of Faith

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21). We believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30). We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 7:26); His miracles (John 2:11); His vicarious and atoning death (I Corinthians 15:3; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 2:9) His resurrection (John 11:25; I Corinthians 15:4); His Ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19); and His personal return in power and glory (Acts1:11; Revelation 19:11). We believe in the absolute necessity of regeneration by the Holy Spirit for salvation because of the exceeding sinfulness of human nature; and that people are justified on the single ground of faith in the shed blood of Christ and that only by God's grace and through faith alone are we saved (John 3:16-19; John 5:24; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5). We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:28-29). We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:9, I Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:26-28). We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (Romans 8:13-14; I Corinthians 3:16; I Corinthians 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:30; Ephesians 5:18).

History
Highlands Baptist Learning Center was opened in July 1972. It is an extension of the educational ministry of the church. As a church ministry, the kindergarten and day care center is under the leadership of the congregation as any other ministry of the church. The ministry is selfsupporting with the Church having full authority over it. Highlands Baptist Learning Center is licensed by Association of Christian Schools International. Memberships are also held in Southern Baptist Association of Christian Schools, and Florida Association of Southern Baptist Schools.

Philosophy
We have been created as individuals, each with unique talents, abilities, personalities and responsibilities. God has a plan for each of us as an individual. He wants us to allow Him to use our uniqueness to fulfill His plan and purpose. This ministry provides a happy Christian environment in which the child may grow physically, socially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Highlands Baptist will help the child develop a philosophy of life that is in harmony with Christian principles -- a life where experiences in earning and achieving bring self-confidence and self-control through the application of Christian principles through the Word of God.

Faculty and Staff

All faculty and staff of Highlands Baptist Learning Center are screened according to State of Florida requirements. .All staff meet at least the minimum standards required by the State of Florida. All staff are obligated under penalty of fine and jail term to report the reasonable suspicion of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or child neglect, in accord with state law and school policy. In this very serious and legally narrow area, the school will not contact parents in advance of making a report to authorities, which would be the procedure followed in most other legal matters. The clear intent of the law, based on the seriousness of the crimes listed above, is to mandate that a report of reasonable suspicion of abuse be made. School staff will make such reports in the best interest of the affected child and do not, once reasonable suspicion is established, have any legal alternative except to make the report to the proper authorities for their investigation and review. .

Family Lifestyle and Biblical Values

We believe God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption. Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is Gods unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreations of the human race. The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in Gods image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation. Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord. Parents are to demonstrate to their children Gods pattern for marriage. Parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values and to lead the, through consistent lifestyles example and loving discipline, to make choices based on biblical truth. Children are to honor and obey their parents.

Our Programs
Our center has an open door policy. Parents and family member may come in at any time. We encourage parent/family participation in our special events and even to stay for morning worship if time allows you to. We do ask you to remember that naptime is generally from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm and is a good time to call and speak to your childs teacher over concerns, questions, curriculum, etc. We value the teamwork of parents, families and teachers, (Isaiah 65: 21-23). Nursery Christian care and training is provided for infants, toddlers, and your children through age two. Only a very limited number of children can be accepted into this program due to the small child to teacher ratio in each group.

Preschool Our Preschool program provides a good foundation for a successful school career. We offer a preschool three and a preschool four program. Preschool programs are available as half-day programs with aftercare available. In preschool children are taught Bible lessons, phonics, reading, writing, numbers, physical education, music art, and other activities on their level. Daily worship time occurs with all classes together in either the Fellowship Hall or the Church. Lead teachers are responsible for leading this time together on a continuing rotation.

CURRICULUM
The curriculum of Highlands Baptist Learning Center begins with our Infant classroom. They are nurtured and loved as we believe the mother would care for her baby. The teacher uses a lot of music in the classroom for stimulation, and also talks with the children throughout the day encouraging developing language skills. Even at this young age, the children begin to comprehend procedure and recognize changes in schedule, new records, books, toys, etc. They recognize others by name. The children have as much outdoor time as weather allows. As the child develops and progresses through Preschool 3 and Preschool 4, the centers curriculum continues to provide hands-on, age appropriate methods of discovery and learning. Phonics is introduced and handwriting is used in letter recognition. Preschool 3 and Preschool 4 are involved in daily Bible stories and Bible activities developed to encourage the child spiritually. Children learn that God is Love, and that each child is precious in His sight. The A Beka Book alphabet memory verse cards are used in K4 as well as other scripture memorization. It is our desire to provide the child with a learning environment that will stimulate an excitement to achieve-not to demand skills, but to encourage them as they emerge. Children leaving the program of Highlands Baptist are known to adapt well to school programs entered. They show academic preparedness, emotional preparedness and evidence of a self-disciplined nature. We receive numerous reports from parents and teachers stating the high level of preparedness and adaptability of children attending our program. We are happy to provide letters of recognition upon request. A complete list of objectives and text by age group is available in the office.

Goals and Objectives Every day we endeavor: To provide a happy Christian environment in which a child may grow physically, socially, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. To help the child develop a philosophy of life that is in harmony with Christian principles. To provide opportunities for church, school and home to work together in meeting the needs of the child and the family. To provide opportunities for self-expression, investigation, experimentation and participation in group activities. To provide satisfying experiences in learning, achieving, and building selfconfidence. To maintain a balanced program of activity, quiet work, and relaxation. In a more long range plan, we trust that the seeds planted as a daycare and preschool child will grow throughout the life of the child. Faith, trust and love are nurtured from the beginning of life. We are honored to be tools of that nurturing to His glory.

Medical Information
Physical examinations for all children entering day care and/or kindergarten are required. Each child must have, from a registered physician, HRS form 3040-noting any infectious, major physical or mental conditions. This examination must be taken within a year prior to entrance and renewed annually. A record of all shots should be included with the physical (preferably on the HRS "blue" card). This record should include Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, MMR, and HIB and Hepatitis B shots. The birth certificate is required. Children should not be brought to the center if they have: severe colds, undetermined rash or spots, fever, severe headache or upset stomach, oozing sores, or other symptoms of illness. Any infectious disease must be reported to the center. The center uses good hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of disease. Children who become ill will be isolated from others immediately. Parents will be notified to make arrangements for the child to be picked up promptly. No exceptions. Other children deserve the same considerations you want for your child. When you are called to pick your child up, there is a 24-Hour period that your child must be free from this illness BEFORE he/she may be brought back to school. If they have any of these symptoms at home it is 24-Hours from that time. Medication to be administered at the center must be authorized by written statement from the parent. The statement must contain the name of the medication, the child's name, the date, time and amount of the dosage A form is provided in the center for instructions pertaining to medication. . The medication must be in the original container, and must have the childs name written on it. The center cannot administer any medication that will mask a fever (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.). Your signed permission in the childs file is given only for extreme emergency use. A sick or injured child is brought to the office where care is given according to need. Staff is trained to administer emergency first aid. An informative phone call will be made to the parent for injuries other than slight scratches and bumps. Illness will be defined as: 1. A temperature of 100 degrees or higher. 2. Vomiting one or more times. 3. Diarrhea one or more times. 4. Green or yellow drainage from eyes, ears, or nose. 5. Coughing and/or wheezing 6. Any other symptom which is abnormal for a particular child and is determined by the director or supervisor on duty to be of risk or concern.

Parents are called when there is a need to remove a child from the center. In case of an accident, we will try to contact the parent or other person listed on the enrollment form. In severe emergencies, the center would call 911. Office personnel would get the child's notarized emergency form and go with the child if transporting is necessary. Medical requirements for student injuries suffered at school will be the responsibility of the parent. Most accidents would probably be covered under the familys health insurance, however, Highlands Baptist Learning Center provides student accident insurance.

Communicable Disease Policy

At Highlands, we desire to maintain a healthful environment by instituting controls designed to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. The term communicable disease shall mean an illness which arises as a result of a specific infectious agent which may be transmitted either by a susceptible host or infected person or animal to another person. A teacher or staff who reasonably suspects that a student or employee has a communicable disease shall immediately notify the office. The most common communicable diseases are, but not limited to: Botulism Giardia Flu Rubella Campylobacteriosis Measles (rubeola) Mumps Salmonellosis Tuberculosis Chicken Pox Meningitis Pinkeye Shigellosis

Any student or employee with a communicable disease, for which immunization is required by law or is available, shall be temporarily excluded from attendance while ill and during recognized periods of communicability. Students and employees with communicable disease for which immunization is not available shall be excluded from attendance while ill. If the nature of the disease and circumstances warrant, the center may require an examination of employee by a licensed medical doctor to verify the diagnosis of communicable disease. Highlands Baptist Learning Center reserves the right to make all final decisions necessary to enforce its communicable disease policy and to take all necessary action to control the spread of communicable disease within the school.

Discipline
In this center we will love and affirm your child by respecting his unique personality. Discipline means guidance or teaching, and we will strive to guide your child to become self-controlled and self-directed. We do not see discipline as punishment but rather as correction. Children may be corrected for displaying behavior such as: 1. Actions that disrupt the group or interfere with a learning activity. 2. Actions that could possibly cause physical/emotional harm to the child or classmates. 3. Actions in direct violation of a well-explained center/classroom rule. 4. Willful disrespect toward the teacher. 5. Use of profane/unwholesome language. Most correction will be handled by the teacher through a reminder or by restricting the child's freedom or privileges (Time out). Parents will be notified if continued problems exist. In cases where a problem persists and there is no behavior change, a child will be sent to see the Director. Parents will be notified if the child is sent to the office. Children who consistently fail to respond to efforts of correction may be dismissed. Much care is taken to insure that correction is handled properly and without anger. We do not expect perfection from the children, but reasonable cooperation. Parents are expected to support and uphold Center policies. Without this cooperation and confirmation from the parents, a double standard exists between the home and Center. This is counterproductive to the child's development and the Center's effectiveness. If at any time misunderstandings develop between the Center and the home, it becomes the obligation of both to resolve these in a Biblical fashion; that of going directly to the parties involved for clarification and explanation. The center confesses that although all teachers are chosen for their Christian commitment and high ideals, this, however, does not make them immune from error. All suggestions and comments from parents will be examined fully, and are welcomed and encouraged for the overall strengthening of the center. The center agrees to work closely with the parents in the care/education of the child. This includes provision of competent teachers, a full and developmentally appropriate curriculum, proper student supervision and communication with the home.

Clothing
All children should have a change of clothing to be kept in the cubby. This clothing will need to be updated regularly to assure proper fit. If your child soils clothing, spills juice or milk, it is less embarrassing to have personal clothing to wear. All clothing such as coats, caps, sweater, etc. should be labeled with the childs name. For safety purposes no cowboy boots, open heel shoes, or sandals should be worn to school. If girls age three and older wear dresses, shorts should be worn under the dress when on the playground. We do not celebrate Halloween and ask that children do not wear any clothing pertaining to that day. Christmas is a time we choose to focus on the birth of Christ so we prefer that items of clothing with Santa not be worn. .

Rest Period
All day care children are required to have a rest period. A small, light weight blanket (no quilts or pack rolls) should be brought from home for this time. It will be kept in the cubby and taken home each Friday to be laundered. If a pillow is desired, it should be a small, soft pillow no larger than 10X15. The cubby is used for all items belonging to your child, and space is limited; therefore, any nap item not meeting the above will be sent home. This will also allow our hallway to look neat for visitors. Label all items. A numbered mat is assigned to each child. The mat is cleaned each Friday.

Messages
Verbal messages brought by children cannot be accepted. Any instruction must be written and given to the person in charge. We, in turn, will send written messages to you.

Snacks
We serve snacks each day; however, fruit, cookies, popcorn or some other snack is requested to share with the class several times during the month. Your child's teacher will assist you in a specific time.

Birthdays
Birthdays are important! As the special day approaches, contact your childs teacher so that she will plan for it, and, perhaps make suggestions about what to serve. Birthdays planned for school should be simple and include a special treat, drink, and (if you desire) a goody bag or party favor for all of the children. No gifts, please.

Parking
We request that you always use the parking places provided and not block the driving area. Please enter the north drive on 36th Avenue and exit the south drive on 36th Avenue. Please leave your unattended car in one of the spaces provided for parking-not in the driving area. It is also suggested that purses and valuable items not be left in an unlocked vehicle.

Transportation
Bus transportation is provided in the afternoon from Ward-Highlands Elementary School and Maplewood Elementary for those children enrolled in the extended care. The bus is used for field trips. Personnel driving the bus meet all requirements set by the State of Florida.. All drivers hold at least a valid Class C Florida Driver's License. The bus is serviced and inspected quarterly and inspected yearly by a certified mechanic. The bus is inspected at each use. The children are required to follow the rules and regulations on trips as if still at the daycare.

Arrival and Departure

Children should be accompanied inside the building each morning. Children should not be dropped off unattended in the breezeways. Be certain that personnel on duty know your child has arrived. Consistent and prompt attendance is in the child's best interest. Children can be dismissed ONLY to those persons whose names appear on the enrollment form. Changes in this form must be given in writing to the office. Children departing from the playground in the afternoon should be picked up at the gate of their play area. As a safety precaution, children will not be released to anyone under the age of sixteen. Young children do not have a good concept of time. If you will be picking up your child at a time out of the norm, please tell the teacher or the office a specific time and the child can be told what would be taking place at that time. "Early" to you may be 3:00, but to your child it could be at the 11:30 dismissal hour, before nap, or whenever they decide! Fewer hearts are broken if the pick up time is made a little more clearly to the child.

Notice to Parents of Reporting Responsibilities

In accord with state law and school policy, school staff are obligated under penalty of fine and jail term to report the reasonable suspicion of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or child neglect.

Huricane Procedures
If a hurricane comes through our area these are the steps that will be in place: 1. We cannot and will not open the center until we have both electricity and phone service. 2. We are very much aware that you need us as soon as possible for your children care. 1. WE WILL BE OPEN WHEN IT IS SAFE, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE DOING!!!! 2. Because of the sheer number of registered pupils it is YOUR responsibility to call us. 352-694-2194 3. There will be NO CHARGE WHEN WE ARE CLOSED but when the center is open regular tuition will be posted to your account.
