Student-Centered Learning Strategies in the Library

Discussion- allows the sharing of new viewpoints but some students can be left out A book club provides students with an outlet for their thoughts and ideas
on a commonly read novel.

Cooperative Learning- groups students of differing abilities so all can learn but can be overused Use Google Docs with your group mates to list and link the resources you
have used for your portion of a report.

Games- engage students and can be used in multiple settings; can become expensive and overly competitive After learning the Dewey Decimal System, play a matching game with call
numbers and subjects.

Simulations- provide a safe environment for practicing new skills but are difficult to create Enter your virtual library and find three books about farm animals from
three different sections.

Discovery- lets students guide their own learning with minimal instructor intervention but can lead to misunderstandings of content After reading a short story about outer space, each student will select
book relating to what was read, and then a second book relating to their first choice. Relations can be in any form.

Problem Solving- requires students to use all their knowledge and skills but is difficult to make and best suited for older students You must teach a Kindergarten student and a 4th grader about whales.
Find a book that each student can use to learn more.
