COMMUNITY EVENTS available on Sunday, October 28, The Ghosts of Bridgeport All of this will bebefore Halloween. The activities start 2012, three days at 11:00 AM and continue until 4:00 PM. The Park is on are Happy to be Back! Pleasant Valley Rd where it crosses the South Yuba
The Ghosts of Bridgeport are very pleased to be coming back and invite you to celebrate the success of keeping the Park open. To start your Halloween adventures, the South Yuba River Park Association and the South Yuba River State Park invite you to their Fall Festival. The Park will come alive with fun, food, games and music. As they do each Halloween - all the good ghosts will appear and tell their own stories of life at Bridgeport. To join in this great family adventure, drive down to Bridgeport at the South Yuba River State Park on Sunday, October 28th anytime between 11:00 and 4:00 PM. Mark Lyon, the Ghost Tour Guy from Nevada City and Grass Valley will call forth spirits of several Ghosts who lived, loved, laughed and worked in our wonderful part of the world. They will appear and tell you of their lives in the late 1800s. There are enough activities to involve everyone for several hours. The days events include; music by Ragged but Right, living history characters, wagon rides, barn tours, wildflower crafts, face painting, gold panning, pumpkin painting and games for kids of all ages. Local author and birder Carol Malnor will be there to sign her childrens book The Blues go Birding Across America. The Audubon Society has planned special activities for the children. There will also be great food and drinks available. The Penn Valley Chamber of Commerce will be selling hot dogs, baked potatoes and drinks and Junes Deli will have a delicious selection baked treats. Of course, Lazy Dog will be there too with a cart filled with various flavored ice cream treats. Janine Martin coordinator of the event said Lets support our local State Park and celebrate its removal from the State Park closure list. Itll be a great afternoon, lots to learn, lots of activities, a haunted barn and admission is free, but there is a $5 fee for parking. I can also confirm a rumor the Friendly Ghosts have a trick or two which will make a very fun afternoon. So, before going out in the evening to Trick or Treat, visit the park and be a part of The Ghosts of Bridgeport Return!

Partnering Against Hunger

Interfaith Food Ministry has been serving families of western Nevada County for the past 25 years. Join us in the fight against hunger by purchasing tickets for our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser at Paulettes Country Kitchen, Friday, October 5, 2012 from 5-9 pm. Paulettes is located on Sutton Way in Grass Valley. You can also buy tickets to a drawing to win many donated gifts. For $10 one can purchase a dinner plate of spaghetti, green salad and bread. Dessert and drinks may be purchased for an additional charge. Employees of Paulettes will donate their superb cooking and service in support of the event so that 100% of the proceeds will go to Interfaith food Ministry. IFM is an all volunteer organization that receives no state or federal funding. While serving the need for supplemental food to hard hit families in our county, we have outgrown our present facility. Our partnering against hunger plan is a community fundraising campaign with a goal of raising money for expansion or relocation of our current facility located at 551 Whiting St. in Grass Valley. Funds are also needed in order to expand days or hours of operation to serve a presently un-served population. We want anyone who needs to receive food to be able to get food, says Sue Vanson, President of Interfaith Food Ministry. Tickets may be purchased from Board members of Interfaith Food Ministry, at Paulettes, or at the door the day of the event. On behalf of our volunteers and families who receive supplemental food, thank you for your continued tax deductible support. To learn more about Interfaith Food Ministry, visit www.interfaithfoodministry.org.

FMP IN THE GARDEN

Amending Your Soil
By Lyn Muth Nevada County Master Gardener Nothing beats organic matter to help create healthy soil. Healthy soil=healthy plant. Some choices for organic matter are compost, leaf mold, peat moss, manures, grass clippings, sawdust, rice hulls, etc. Soil organisms break this material down, releasing nutrients and improving the structure of both clay and sandy soils. Using composted material speeds up the process and makes the nutrients readily available to the plant. Organic matter several inches thick can be used as mulch and it will break down, further enriching the soil. Organic matter can be worked into the soil to decompose, releasing nutrients. Adding several inches twice a year will continue to aid soil improvement. Test your soil for nutrient levels. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potash (K) are important measures of what your soil may or may not have. Knowing this will enable you to add the necessary amendment to bring the level up to a sufficient level. In a vegetable garden, most necessary nutrients are used up by the plants as they grow and mature. Testing the soil in a simple test purchased at your local garden center will keep you up to date on your soils needs. Test after each season in your vegetable garden and add the necessary nutrients. Green manures are another way to improve the soil. Cover crops add organic matter when tilled back into the soil, they protect the soil from sun and harsh rains, and help reduce weeds. Some even add nitrogen into the soil and as the plants roots grow, they break up the soil adding nutrients deeper into the soil. How To Improve Your Homes Curb Appeal

Homeowners who have tried to sell a home are likely familiar with the phrase curb appeal. Curb appeal is similar to getting ready for a big date, only youre not dressing yourself up to make a strong first impression. Instead, improving curb appeal involves dressing your home up in the hopes it makes a strong first impression on prospective buyers, many of whom will have a strong opinion about the property before they even get out of their cars to have a look around. A home with strong curb appeal can entice buyers who are likely to believe that a home with a well-maintained exterior is likely to have an equally impressive interior. Homeowners who want the process of selling their home to go smoothly can improve the propertys curb appeal in a number of ways, many of which dont necessitate a substantial home improvement budget. Clean Up. The most effective way to improve curb appeal is to clean up the property. Many homeowners are savvy enough to remove toys and other items from the yard before showing a home, but cleaning up goes beyond removing clutter from the property. Make sure all hedges are trimmed and remove weeds, sticks and other debris from any flower beds. Lay mulch in the flower beds and garden, as mulch prevents weed growth while helping the soil retain moisture, resulting in more attractive gardens to catch a buyers eye. Get An Edge On Other Sellers. Edging is another easy and effective way to improve curb appeal. Edge driveways, sidewalks and other walkways around the property, removing or trimming anything that is hanging over the driveway or walkways. If the boundary between your driveway and lawn is not distinct, consider installing edging materials such as stone or bricks. The edging can be level with the driveway or elevated, but keep in mind that elevated driveway edging can protect the lawn, preventing kids from riding their bicycles onto the lawn or cars from driving onto it. Adding edging is not a very difficult do-it-yourself project. Take To The Trees. Many homeowners grow accustomed to overgrown trees around their property and may not notice that low-hanging, unsightly branches are hiding the home from view. Buyers want to see the house, so take to the trees and trim any branches that hang too low or obscure your home. Clean The Gutters. Leaves and sticks hanging from the gutters are a red flag to buyers, who tend to associate clogged gutters with roof damage. Clean the gutters thoroughly before putting your home up for sale and keep them clean throughout the selling process. If your property includes lots of trees, install guards to keep twigs and leaves out of the gutters. Make Sure All Plants, Including Flowers, Are Living. Dehydrated or dead plants and flowers are eyesores, and they will give buyers the impression that you didnt pay much attention to your property. Make sure all plants are alive and thriving and replace those that arent. You can replant new flowers or plants or just use potted plants instead. When purchasing new plants, choose low-maintenance varieties that appeal to buyers who want good vibrant plants but might not want to put in much work into the garden.
