Velocity - is the speed and direction on an object.

Most commonly the term "velocity" is used to describe the speed of an object. For example, a car might have a velocity of 5 m/s. That means that the car's speed is 5 meters per second. It's really just a fancy word for "speed" used in physics a lot.

Velocity Meaning and Definition

1. 2. (n.) Quickness of motion; swiftness; speed; celerity; rapidity; as, the velocity of wind; the velocity of a planet or comet in its orbit or course; the velocity of a cannon ball; the velocity of light. (n.) Rate of motion; the relation of motion to time, measured by the number of units of space passed over by a moving body or point in a unit of time, usually the number of feet passed over in a second. See the Note under Speed.

Question How can an object have negative velocity and zero acceleration? Or how about zero velocity and negative acceleration?

Answer Negative velocity just means that the object is moving "backwards" [or downwards] relative to the chosen reference frame. If the acceleration is zero that means that the velocity is not changing. Therefore, the object must be moving in the negative direction at a constant speed. If the object has zero velocity, it is not moving. If it has negative acceleration its velocity is changing in the negative direction. This means that the object is at rest but is speeding up in the negative [again usually meaning "backwards"] direction.
