After a Long Time: Death - Each cig takes 10 minutes off of your life - 20 Cigarettes in 1 Pack If you started smoking 1 pack a day for the next 10 years, how many days would you lose from the end of your life? 20 years? 30 years? 40 years?

1 Cig = 10 Min 20 Cig = 1 Pack

20 Cig x 10 Min = 200 Min/pack (day)

200 Min x 365 Days = 7300 Min/year


7300 Min / 60 Min = 1216 Hrs/year

1216 Hrs / 24 Hrs = 50 Days/year

10 Years = 50 x 10 = 500 Days = 1.32 years 20 Years = 50 x 20 = 1000 Days = 2.74 years 30 Years = 50 x 30 = 1500 Days = 4.11 years

40 Years = 50 x 40 = 2000 Days = 5.48 years

- Smoking is #1 Cause of Cancer - 85% of Lung Cancer for Males - 75% of Lung Cancer for Females - 13% Survival Rate for Lung Cancer - Starting Before 15 = 5x Likely to Get/Die of Lung Cancer

- Smokers risk of a heart attack is more 2x that of nonsmokers

- Smokers more likely to die from a heart attack

I already smoke. Is it worth it to stop?


24 Hours: chance of heart attack decreases. 48 Hours: nerve endings start regrowing, smell/taste enhanced.

1-9 Months: coughing, sinus congestions, fatigue, shortness of breath decrease.


1 Year: risk of heart disease decreases to that of a smoker

I already smoke. Is it worth it to stop?


5-15 Years: stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked 10 Years: risk of lung cancer is half that of smokers. 15 Years: risk of heart disease decreases to that of those who have never smoked.

Narcotics: drugs derived from the opium plant that have a sedative effect.

Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens: drugs that alter moods, thoughts, perceptions PCP (angel dust): PCP users have drowned in shallow water because they were disoriented. LSD (acid): colorless, tasteless, and odorless. Gives a false sense of power or security. Deaths from trying to stop trains or jumping off buildings because they thought they could fly.

Inhalants: substances with breathable fumes that are sniffed and inhaled to give mind altering high.

HALF LIFE: This is the period of time required for the concentration or amount of drug in the body to be reduced by one-half.

- Very Unpredictable
- Half Life varies for several drugs, especially the more powerful drugs.

If the half life varies, it is unknown when enough of the drug is out of the system for it to be safe to use more of the drug (medical reasons). Illegal drug users (already impaired judgment) often overdose because of this as well
