Teacher Education Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Dominique Wooders School: Mathews Elementary Date and Time of Lesson: October 12, 2012 9:00am Subject/Grade Level: Math/ 5th grade

Description of Lesson: Students will review the concept of exponents from a previous lesson and be introduced to the terms squared and cubed. They will use the last 30 minutes of class to play TIC TAC TOE with exponents Lesson Title:

Fun with Exponents

Curriculum Standards Addressed:

National Standard(s): Operations and Algebraic Thinking 5.OA.1: Write and interpret numerical expressions Operations and Algebraic Thinking 5.OA.2: Analyze patterns and relationships SC Curriculum Standard(s): 5-1: The student will understand and utilize the mathematical processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation. SC Academic Indicator(s): 5-1.6: Generalize connections between new mathematical ideas and related concepts and subjects that have been previously considered

Cross Curricular Connections: Language: students will have to communicate with their partners Instructional Objective(s) Criteria:
TSWBAT: understand exponents vocabulary; Exponential Notation, Standard form, and Expanded form. TSWBAT: solve exponents in the desired way; Standard and Expanded. The student will also be able to decipher between squared and cubed

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Pre: students will be assessed with a starter question. (Write in expanded, exponential, and expanded). This will be taken up During: Students will be given practice problems in the book to work on. This will be an informal observation Post: students will be asked to solve a three more questions (same format as the Pre).

Materials/Resources:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Smartboard Paper Pencil Paper Squares in two colors Dice TIC TAC TOE game board

Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge):

A. Social: Students must be able to work individually, and be able to share their thinking with their classmates. B. Cognitive: Students must have an understanding of multiplication and how to write expressions mathematically. C. Physical: Students must be able to sit at their own desks and work without disturbing others D. Emotional: Students must be able to accept that sometimes they will not get the right answer and accept help from peers and teacher.

References: Procedures: 1. Students will be instructed to get out paper and pencil and a question will be displayed on the Smartboard (NCTM 1) 1. Write 5x5x5x5 in Exponential Notation 2. Write 6x6x6x6x6 in Expanded Form 3. Write 2x2x2x2x2 in Standard Form Students will probably have forgotten the previous lesson so this will be a quick assessment of how much they remember 2. Then I will take up the papers and have 3 students come to the board, solve and explain their thinking to the class (NCTM 1,2,3,5) This will hopefully refresh the students memory of the lesson 3. I will then start the lesson by reviewing the vocabulary. 4. We will do a few practice problems and be allowed to come to the board and write their answer. My Power Points will display the problems and the students will write the answer. (NCTM 1,2,3) 1. Exponential Notation 1.) 2x2= 2.) 2x2x2= 5. Following the review I will introduce squared and cubed 1. Squared: any number raised to the 2nd power 2. Cubed any number raised to the third power 6. We will do examples of this as well on the board (A lot of the examples will be impromptu so they will be written on the Smartboard) 7. The final assessment: students will write an exponent in expanded, standard and exponential notation. 1. Write in Exponential Notation, Standard Form, and Expanded Form: 5x5x5x5x5 This will be taken up and evaluated 8. Directions for Exponent Game a. Break students up into groups of 2 one group of three b. Get paper and a pencil. c. Give one student 20 squares and the other 20 in another color. d. Get one number cube for players to share. Take turns. e. Player 1: Toss dice. Use that number as your base. f. Toss the dice again. Use that number as your exponent g. Solve in Standard form. h. Cover the number in standard form. If the answer is taken, lose your turn. i. The first player or team to cover a row, column, or diagonal in one of the four sections of the game board wins. j. Player 2: repeat steps d-h k. Students will play this review game in order to get more practice with exponents.

Accommodations: The game will be used as extra practice for students. If students cant work in
groups then they will be able to play the game alone.
