London Heathrow Airport - Terminal 5: Airside Road Tunnel Five road tunnels serve the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. The largest being the Airside Road Tunnel, a twin-bore link for passenger transfer coaches, delivery and specialised airport vehicles travelling to and from terminals 1, 2 and 3. Each bore is 8.8m in diameter and 1.2km long. The selected lighting system, the-state-ofthe-art Thorlux Scanlight lighting control system operating Thorlux tunnel luminaires is now fully operational and lighting the way for the expected 3000 vehicles per day traffic density. The Scanlight system was chosen for its speed of installation and long-term maintenance and energy cost saving benefits. The installations include some 2,700 luminaires incorporating 150W high pressure sodium DALI fully electronic addressable control gear, being voltage stable and offering very low harmonic distortion. To satisfy emergency lighting requirements a proportion of luminaires are fitted with a supplementary integral automatically monitored 55W PL-L emergency circuit negating the requirement for a UPS system. The extruded aluminium One-, two- and three lamp luminaires finished complete with external IP66 plug-and-socket connections were supplied to site with ready made support fixings for fast and reliable installation.
