UNIT I Review of Thermodynamics : Units and Dimensions system, Properties and processes, Heat and Work, Ideal gas equation. Thermodynamic equations, Zeroth law and first law of Thermodynamics. Enthalpy and Internal energy of gases. Simple numericals of first law as applied to a closed and open system. Statement of Second law of Thermodynamics. UNIT II (a) Steam Boilers : Classification, Simple vertical boiler, Cochran boiler, Babcock and Wilcox boiler, Function of different boiler mountings & accessories. Boiler draught. (b) Properties of Steam : Generation of steam, Wet and Superheated steam, Volume, Enthalpy, Entropy and internal Energy of steam, Steam Table. UNIT III (a) Internal Combustion Engines : Principles of working of Engines, Otto and diesel cycles and their efficiencies. Functions of different parts of the engines. (b) Introduction of basic modes of heat transfer: Combined modes of heat transfer. (c) Engineering Materials :Classification and properties of engineering materials, iron ore, cast iron, mild steel. UNIT-IV Machine tool : types of lathe ,principal parts of lathe, specification of lathe, lathe operations, principal parts of shaper, classification and specification of shaper, principal parts of drilling machine, types of drilling machine, specification of drilling machine, drilling operation, cutting speed, feed and depth of cut, machining time for machine tool. UNIT-V Welding : Types of welding process, important terms in welding, types of welding joints, gas welding, arc welding ,comparison between A.C. and D.C. Pattern Making: Pattern materials, types of patterns, pattern allowances, mould, constituents of moulding sand, properties of moulding sand, foundry tools.
