Class Exercise

The Acme Ltd has developed a product which is manufactured in six steps, labeled A though F. Because of its size and complexity, it is produced one at a time. Mr. Mahadevan, the production control manager, thinks that network scheduling technique might be useful in planning future production. He asked the Production Engineer in charge about the six steps required in production and the order in which the steps took place. He recorded the following information: A is the first step and precedes B and C C preceded D and E B follows D and precedes E F follows E D is a successor of F

A. Draw an AoN diagram for Mahadevan. Do you see any problem with the resulting network?

B. On checking with the Production Engineer again, Mahadevan corrects his last note to read D is a predecessor of F. Draw a new AON diagram with this information. Simplify the diagram by removing any redundant predecessor arrows. For your recall, the earlier relationships were as follows: A is the first step and precedes B and C C preceded D and E B follows D and precedes E F follows E D is a successor of F

C. After pondering the network and rechecking with the Production Engineer, Mahadevan concluded that B was really a predecessor of D rather than vice versa. Draw a revised AON network incorporating this new change.

D. Draw an arrow diagram representation of the network in part c. How many dummy activities did you use in your network?
