Autism: An Introduction By Tobinworld Staff Writer Although the term autism has become commonplace, many parents and

caregivers remain confused regarding the parameters of the disorder and dont know how to judge whether their child or student should be classified as autistic. Current research understands autism as a neurobehavioral disorder that includes impaired communication skills, social interaction, and behavioral patterns. However, not all children with autism will display the same behaviors, as the disorder can range in severity from a relatively non-disabling handicap to a complete disability requiring institutional care. There are a number of common signs of autism. One of those is difficulty in understanding the thoughts and feelings of others. In addition, children with autism often have a hard time expressing themselves, whether verbally, through facial expressions, or via touch. These children also may experience high sensitivity to sounds, sights, touches, and smells that others regard as completely normal. Sometimes, children who have autism demonstrate repetitious rocking, hand flapping, or other unusual body motions. Some children with autism may show unusual talent in certain areas such as math, drawing, or music. The first signs of autism usually occur during the first three years of life. In some instances, a child may appear to be developing normally, with autistic symptoms suddenly appearing during this window. About Tobinworld: A nonprofit school for children and young adults with autism, developmental challenges, and emotional disorders, Tobinworld seeks to teach each student the behaviors and skills necessary to function as productively as possible.
